Row row row your boat harshly down the stream crying because my blisters hurt and my coach is really mean
hehe so reletable
LOL
As a fellow rower this is true but my coach is actually nice
QUICK ON THE DOCK
The first half is relatable cause nationals ended yesterday
Those splits are painful to even imagine.
right? jeez
they look like they are at a 1:30 split
At the start very painful but around the middle is what I row at
It's more painful at the end of the race. You have to pace your energy so you maximize your output consistency through the race. If you don't, you'll tire out to soon and not wine. It's just like running.
@@ItsVorty it said around 1:18 split
Love the spectators casually keeping pace on their bikes along the sidelines...
Yess jajaja
Those are most likely the team coaches. Most coaches will ride their bikes along the course to give feedback after the race and to see if their rowers are following the race plan. Some of them even video on their phones while biking!
@@billyw.2222 Lol the many dozens of people on their bikes are the team's coaches. Yeah no rofl.
@@codyheiner3636 In my experience as a rower, I believe they're mostly if not all coaches. Especially considering this is the Olympics, they probably have more coaches than races I've participated in.
All it takes in one coach to stumble on his bike and the whole stack of bicycles comes crashing down
It's cool how you can see the boats lurch forwards as the rowers all lean forwards in unison, a beautiful demonstration of Newton's third law.
nerd
@@evan2758 no need to say that he's just explaining that the crew is rowing well

Guys 2:07 where it starts, this has been your time stamp guide
I found the book "The Boys in the Boat" in my basement. It is about rowing back in the 30's. It describes in detail, the muscles, mental strength, and stamina, not to mention pain that competitive rowing demands. You have "8" men that must become "1" with every stroke of the oar. I had to come here and watch what I am reading about. These men are like thoroughbred horses. I am appreciating my book more after watching this.
That's exactly what I did, and this is the first video I came to while reading the book Boys in the Boat!
A movie of that book comes out in December!
The movies out
@@Jr-_ Well, while The Boys in the Boat had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 11, 2023, it is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 25, 2023
@@nealmcb I just watched it in a theater yesterday
It always amazes me how fast they go, it’s like they just slide on water
Well technically they are sliding haha
I used to row... not hardcore, but i did... its a really, REALLY rough sport...
i rowed. i only know one tougher sport, which is squash. and i know many sports. only after squash session i was more exhausted then after a rowing race.
Couple years ago I was facilitating some canoeing on Watts Bar Lake in Tennessee. We went out towards the open area. But eventually started to head back to Shore but it was windy and it made the water rough and it was extremely difficult to make progress. So I can kind of understand what you're saying.
Pintkonan hmm ive never played squash but rowing is a great sport if theres people you like on the team and the coach is good. Hard tho.
@@sterlingsilver5937 your kidding right?
@@jamespostle6894 I'm 100% serious. If you look up Watts Bar Lake and see if you can find photos of Bird Island you can see the general area where we were on the lake. When you're dealing with Rough Waters and you're going against the wind without a motor it can make it nearly impossible to make progress.
2021 rewatching these 2012 Olympic highlights.
It seems like in a race like this where your speed is based on the sum effort of 8 people, it's hard to have big comebacks or sprint finishes, because you can't have one person go beastmode and pass some people. You would need all 8 of your people, on average, to suddenly find energy to go much faster than all 8 of their people, which seems relatively unlikely.
That's an interesting thought! Law of averages.
That's what coxwin in the back is for. The coxwin tells the rowers to do power strokes like during the last few meters or when you're neck to neck with another boat.
It may seem unlikely but the amount the guys on this level work together their minds are pretty much in sync so they will go apeshit as a team.
Lol "beastmode"
I’m not olympics no way, but you have a cox who is yelling down the mic and because especially at Olympic level you’re all not thinking very hard, it’s easier than you might expect for your cox to influence how the team works.
Holy they are so fast
Go watch Fautasi race practice… you’ll see how fast they are
Them sliding is producing a trippy effect, almost like it's lagging.
The slides maximize the stroke range.
"Looks like they could row another couple of miles". Yeah right
couldn't* listen carefully
@@Sascha053 it sounds like that but that makes no sense, because he talks about the germans in contrast to the canadians who he says look absolutely spent. He even says 'the Germans on the other hand'
😂
@@resathe6760 yeah he's talking about the Germans and he says they could run another couple of miles.
I'm reading "The Boys in the Boat" about the 1936 USA Olympic rowing team, so I had to watch this video. Fascinating book by Daniel James Brown.
That's what brought me here too, haha
Exactly the same!
lol same
Lol
That's why I'm here, too! Gosh!
Relentless. Can’t imagine how many hours they put in practice & gym.
whenever I watch these videos I feel so tense. even though I can tell who will win

Imagine one of those guys catching a crab the last 500.
What happens if you crab in the olympics? Since its such a big event, would they restart??
Watch the Men's Quad from 2011 world championships. It's on the worldrowing video archive. Same with Women's 8+, 2003.
@@pablomercado8022 its not a real crab. Its when you feather before getting your oar out of the water
@@Charlie-yq8hu I think he knows lmao
@@victorstiles8946 i assumed he didnt cause he thought you might have to restart, so i though he may not have realised its a technique error not a physical error out of the rowers control
i was so tense at the start of the race right before they went. i had the same feeling as if i was actually there in the boat
It took me back to my highschool days when I used to row in regattas. The start of the race was definitely an adrenalin boost.
O melhor esporte que existe , disciplina , trabalho em equipe , dedicação máxima , não existe exército do mundo, não existe nenhum tipo de esporte , que tenha treinamentos mais exaustivos do que o remo , esses caras são verdadeiros super heróis
What an amazing shot 4:55 😍
So who else watches Olympic competitions for no reason
Such amazing, powerful effort.
... All to go noticeably slower than a guy casually biking.
Not taking away from the athletes skill and effort; just a funny thing I noticed for the first time
There is so much effort put into rowing that you don't understand lmao.
Plus, in the boat, it's very fast-feeling.
The way I justify it to myself is that a bicyclist needs a paved road, a rowing shell just needs some water
I went rowing with my dad once and I was dead-tired after just a couple of minutes. Very demanding!
Well done KANADAAAA! I'm realizing all this almost 9 years later.
Row row row your boat, gently down the stream...
That song portrays the wrong people image of rowing
Eric Cheng I can respect humor but this is anything but gentle.
Uuuuu
MANTAP
... merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
Like that you have been on the year I don't think so many things thanks for your support of the most important ❤❤💖
In my city in Germany dragon boat races are a tradition still held up today. Every summer you can hear the drums from far away
I’m watching this after just capsizing an octo I’m Britain January. The river was so high and dangerous
How...
very exciting game.I like it.
GER.was petty fast!🇩🇪
watch at 2x speed its funny

The cameraman is the fastest thing on earth
It's a machine not a human carrying the camera
Be your self and the beast and the beast beautiful you
I used to do it back days the problem if one guy miss a row and he tried to skip just pretending. The boat will go down force which means you the boat will not go in the same consistent.. imagine if you are swimming with one leg and two hands.everyone should have the same balance thats why the Netherlands is so tired there stamina is greater then anyone there but they don’t have consistency someone was not paddling enough he made everyone tired
Rowing is all about synchronization. I love watching the pros, they are so in synch with eachother it's like art
Thought this was the 2020 Olympics for a solid 7 minutes 🤣
I kept thinking its over.
seems like Canada was inefficient at the start causing them to burn out. If you look there was a lot of energy just bouncing up and down which is natural at the start but they were unable to control it and burned out. Just my guess though.
So nice
looks super fun, probably really hard tho, but i'm ok with that
it’s so fun but painful
I enjoyed being in crew but it was hard the same time.
OMG... The Real Champions
This is good
Kid: "cannoos are so lame and slow"
Uncle: "we'll see about that"
You have to appreciate these guys are lightweight, they have to weigh in under 72.5 kg with a crew average under 70, 2hrs before the race
Great Britain def won that cheer contest 👏
Funny how fast that seems in the water, then people biking on shore are hardly peddling
fast as thunder
I came back here again after watching henley race from social network 😅

Gönül Meltemi love rowing ❤
I don't even like sports but quarantine brings me here

I support Germany
GB
@@kilianp.5692 GB for me too
@@kilianp.5692 I don't support GB because they are greedy for medals and not sportsmen. When it comes to competing in the FIFA worldcup they compete as England, wales, Scotland etc so as to have many teams inside so as to increase their chances of winning.
But in the Olympics the compete as Great Britain , and the medals from wales , England etc get counted as one country! Just because they want to be in the top of the medals ranking. They should be consistent in all competitions, and not to seek unfair advantages!!
@@fadhilalbakry well that is not how it actually works, they compete in the world cup as four separate nations because each individual country have a football association and a separate league, and the FIFA recognition is based on that. While the Olympics is governed by the IOC and they recognize you as a whole because all of the mentioned countries fall under the name The United Kingdom and the North Ireland, so team GB "great Britain" is recognized as once, also they don't have a football team to play in the Olympics because they haven't agreed on how would they figure it out, there was only one exception when they hosted the Olympics in 2012 in London but the team later on was discontinued.
@@fadhilalbakry not about being greedy lol, it's about where the association is based and whether the olympics/FIFA recognises their existence. Kind of a weird reason to not support a team
Sorry but this 'commentator' is the worst I've ever had to listen to.
no
Yes you are right
I think he is the one who is commentating in football
No need to be. We all feel the same. :(
Are you from Canada 😃
What's the job of the first person without the oar
Super rowing and video
Wow
nice
I already knew Germany would win
Super rowing
Having done some minor rowing what their doing looks painful, and they look so fast even though when you look at the biker's in the background you realize it isn't that fast
Oh my damn
So ~ Fast !! Faster then dragon boat !!
Germany!
this one too
I like
Quick question the guy at the back of the boat what does he do the guy who isn’t using the oars. I don’t know much about rowing
That's the coxwain responsible for steering and coordinating the rowers.
@JUSTUS ROTICH thanks I was thinking it was got to do with steering but wasn’t sure thanks for clearing it up
Yes, see it to. His recover is different.
Gold, Silver, Bronze in the same heat of only 4 boats. Smart planning! :P
Philippines 🇵🇭 is very good at this. They must join next time
That’s a good one 😂
row row row your boat try to beat the german team XD
Every one whi rows hate that momment the ref says 2min you can feel your heart beating fast and dors 2mins feel like a long time then when you reach t-0 that stressful momment just disappear and you go full on with your boat
Yeah Same
Anyone watching in 2020?
Who is watching it 2019?
Me, trying to get better at rowing still have alot of weight to lose to look like these guys....
2021. Missing the olympics real bad right now
@@emilyhamilton6226 i ll cry coz really miss it corona really soo bad
Who's the last person just riding?
Top
What's top?
No clue what they mean by 'top?' Perhaps they mean cox. That person is the coxswain (cox for short), and they steer the boat + give commands.
It's the coxswain. Basically they yell at the rowers the whole race, give them motivation and instructions, and they also have a mechanism that they can control the rudder and steer the boat. It's actually a really important position of the boat, especially an 8 man boat
Possibly the worst commentator currently alive

good spats
Nope, Boston Bruins commentator much worse hahaha
As Fernando Alonso would say, "He's a Yoke." F1 Fans would get it.

Lovely Germany you won. Congradulation
how far it is? 2 km?
Rob Gibson . level: Tiger Blood
❤
Sou good
I didn’t know this was a thing
fun fact: each boat has a combined total output of 1.5 horse power
Each rower probably putting out ~400 watts (conservative). One horsepower ~700 watts, so each boat closer to 5 horsepower?
@@cwilcock7008 more like 550 Watts each rower
Canada😘

I could row faster than them solo- in Minecraft.
The social network brought me here
SAME
Woww
what do the small people do at the rear? steer?
FullOilBarrel and shout
They act as a conductor of sorts to keep the towers in sync
Steer and act as conductors. They rarely steer during a race though because the rudder can slow the boat down.
I Live in Germany ❤❤❤❤
GER!
It says heats highlights, then proceeds to show only the second of two heats with zero helpful commentary.
The incompetence is just amazing here.
What speeds to they reach at max potetial.....40kmph? or more?
Much less I would think looking at the bikers in the background
Probably 30
Keno Fuhrken the people on the bike are their coaches so they like to keep up with their crew
It's not that fast. Good middle distance runners could beat them easily over this distance.
cantik
I love you Germany 😍😍😍 100 %
Canadian men are so cute and chubby. Such an elegant sport
