This is really a great basspart from David Paton! A long time the idea was that Pino Palladino plays on this song, but it is David Paton who also (among other things) did some really great basslines for Kate Bush. Listen for instance at my basscovers from Moving • Kate Bush with Moving.... and Wuthering Heights • Kate Bush Wuthering He...
Back to Nikita: David plays some really fantastic melodic (and sometimes fast) bassriffs. Listen for instance at bar 35 in the first Chorus: sixteenth notes; hammer on notes and staccato (short) notes alternated with legato (long/bound) notes.
An other astonishing riff is in bar 94. Check it out!
When you listen to the basic rhythm (for instance bar 9 -17) the ‘secret’ is to really play the rest after the notes. When you look at bar 9 I’ve written one and a half note G; than a rest; one and a half note B and than a rest. It’s very important to not play two half notes (G and B) but really feel the ‘breath’ between those notes.
Besides playing a steady rhythm and groove and the riffs in bar 35 and 94 I’ve mentioned, David plays really nice other licks. Listen for instance at bar 29. That’s not a very difficult lick, but it’s very tasteful with alternating the short and long notes. And also the riff in bar 45 is really nice. David plays the riff with syncopated C notes and a staccato note on the A. I think it really pops!
To get close to the fretless sound of David I place the fingers of my righthand above the pickup next to the bridge. And I also use a bit of Chorus/flanger and a compressor.
I play this song on a Sire Marcus Miller V10 with roundwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. Don’t forget to tune your bass a bit higher (A4 = 445 Hz).
Bass: David Paton

Maestro...

Thanks
My pleasure!! 👍🎶🎵
👌
Hoi Bart, dankjewel! Basknorrende groet, Peter www.basscoverpete.com
