Last summer, I crossed paths with a fair skinned, blonde haired couple at a large tourist site near my home in nothern Ohio. As I tried to squeeze past them on the busy sidewalk, I apologized to them. The man looked down to me with a blank look on his face, then the pretty woman beside him spoke up, "Sorry. His English is not very good. We are visiting from Russia..." My eyes lit up, I smiled wide, then I turned to each of them to shake their hand, "Welcome to United States! I hope you have a wonderful time! Visit Cedar Point Amusement Park. Many exciting rides there!" They were both smiling happily and nodding their heads. I then turned to the woman and told her that I know one word in Russian. I pointed to my mouth and held up my thumb and index finger to indicate 'little bit'. I tipped my head to one side and shrugged my shoulders.... "Spa-ce-ba?" I told them. --I do not know the Russian spelling. (It means "Thank you," in Russian.) Both of their faces lit up and they smiled and nodded their heads eagerly. We parted with smiles and additional smiles. I hope they enjoyed themselfs while they were here and went home with many great memories! 🙂
No one in the United States would make fun of you or anyone else for not being fluent in English. This is a country of immigrants and we have all languages here. You’ll always be welcome and always have someone to help you.❤
Also, most of us are used to all kinds of “ broken English”, so can understand even with mistakes and different accents. There are even many different regional US accents, and worldwide (ie: Brit’s, Australians, etc)
You're right for the most part... as long as they aren't wearing a goofy red cap (those may make squinty-eye gestures while telling you to "go home"... to China).

@@Queen-dl5ju There are bigots everywhere in every nation. It's an unfortunate aspect of humanity but it's not the norm. Whenever I encounter someone whose English is not very good, I am still honored that they are making an attempt and treat them with respect and kindness as I hope they would treat me if I were in their native country without being fluent in their language.
If only everyone would choose kindness and acceptance over bigotry. We are heading in that direction, but it will take time.
And as i can see a country of illegal immigrants.

I am so happy that you were able to escape & free to live as you wish. In 1973 we became friends with a wonderful gentleman & his family after he escaped a North Korean concentration camp (his words), his stories were horrible and terrifying. His crime was being a Christian. They taught us many things about Korean culture, made us many different foods especially my favorite, Kimchi. In turn we guided them thru the complexities of US culture, English & our food and after many decades we treasure our dear friends. I keep thinking what a paradox it is in the propaganda of always saying US is bad & weak but in North Korea the US dollar is strong & you must learn English, it would seem that would give their citizens mixed messages. I wish the very best for you & your husband and hope that you always walk in sunshine & happiness.
15:49 Wow, that's crazy. I didn't realize that North Korea, of all places, had most of its citizens learning English, and many using US dollars for currency. How in the world do you keep up the brainwashing regimen with all the tiny ways the regime is getting undermined? This gives me more hope for the North Korean people. Hopefully one day they'll be able to rid themselves of the regime and live peacefully and prosperously with the rest of the world.

Only in one direction. From the East Coast of the US to the West Coast of NK is pretty far. While the East Coast of NK to the West Coast of Hawaii is pretty close. But turn that around and it's pretty different.

From the westernmost land of North Korea to the easternmost land of the United States is about 6,570 miles. From the easternmost land of North Korea to the westernmost land of Puuwai, Hawaii, an island with a population of 130, is about 4,526 miles.
Their geometry is even sillier because it fails to consider the fact that the U.S. doesn't have to bomb North Korea from a launch-site in the United States: it can use missiles launched from submarines much closer to North Korea and bombs dropped from long-range bombers flying over North Korea.
I love sociology and North Korea fascinates me and saddens me. its one of the only places in the world where a person can have a complete culture shock and their entire view of how the world works completely turned upside down.

Heh, if she thinks that the US has some impressive buildings that are a hundred years old, wait until she learns that the UK has building that are a thousand years old. And Egypt has buildings/structures over three thousand years old.
The US could be looked at as the child of the UK and several European countries such as France or Spain. For the most part we’re proud and glad it has taken so many traits from us.

We are the ones watching this and making sure the US doesn't become the next North Korea. But I guess some Americans watch this and think America is great while they vote for a president that just sent an argument to the Supreme Court that a president should be able to send Seal Team Six to dispatch his political opponents and face no consequences.

I am glad that former NK escaped, but I felt bad for those are there in NK dealing with Un while he and his family living the life as some struggling to survive.

A Dictatorship Country like NK,Russia will never let truth prevail and will always use fear and oppression on its own citizens for effect. Once the deprogramming is broken the realization that things can be good everywhere and with anyone become a very real concept. Welcome too Freedom. It costs a lot of work to maintain but you have a choice of path's that other wise would Not be available.

@@AlbertaGeekWorse than that. He tried to become the Kim of the US. When he lost the election in 2020 Trump tried his very best to overthrow democracy itself. He tried to get the American people to stop trusting in the democratic voting process. He tried dozens of times to get the result overthrown in court.
He tried everything he could think of to try and block the peaceful transfer of power to Biden and his staff. He approached anyone and everyone in multiple States and tried to bribe or threaten the politicians there into declaring him the winner in that State. “Just find me eleven thousand and something votes.” Comes to mind. He even tried to get his vice president to stop carrying out a ceremonial tradition of transferring power.
And when all that failed, he tried to use his followers to physically overthrow Democracy on January 6th 2021. That wasn’t just an insurrection. That was basically a coup attempt to destroy the US government and overthrow the very foundation of the US itself. If his supporters had actually captured the vice president and most of the members of Congress…
Honestly while I don’t know exactly how things would have gone down but it would have resulted in the deaths of Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi at least and Trump would have installed himself as “President for life” either like Putin or more ideally for him, like the Kim dynasty where he would die and pass power to one of his sons. That’s what Trump wanted. He looked at North Korea and the Kims and wanted the same in the US for the Trumps.
When actually worries me is how few Americans seem to realise how close they came to losing everything and the freedom they so love. And now in 2024, Trump is back and ready to take a second shot at overthrowing democracy and turning the US into a dictatorship.
Winston Churchill (Ex-British Army Officer, Ex-Prime Minister of Great Britain during WW2) once said something to the effect of "that Democracy was very bad. But it was the best form of Government that exists". (Meaning that: It has a lot of faults, but there was no other way of Governing that works as well)
I imagine that this was based on his personal experience and observations, and studies of Governments from around the world over "recent" history..... going back a little to the Greeks and Romans etc...

But maybe not.... I shudder when I think how I would cope with an interview in a foreign language that I was taught at high school, that is the other possible explanation.
I could only speak reasonably fluently (the foreign language) when I was living in that foreign country for some time.. (I think she mentioned that she was in the USA for a week, and speaking her 'learner' English language then)

USA dollar is probably the most officially and un-officially 'tradable'..... the British Pound, the Euro, Aussie and NZ Dollar, Japanese Yen are all good in most places overseas, worldwide.... But the USA Dollar is the most well known, and more tradable for that reason. The Chinese Yuan, may be of value for people in NK areas bordering China, rather than the other border at South Korea.

The one comment that blew my mind was the one about being taught about missiles at 1:47. That the US has to go all the way around (meaning shoot east and go around the world) whereas NK can just shoot east and its closer. I can't even give that a laugh emoji. :(

in this 'doco' they mention that English is taught so they can talk with the outside world... and convince everyone that all is good in NK..... It's not for their benefit, it's to strengthen the NK regime as it is, and keep the regime in power. For propaganda purposes if you like.
