  • The Perseids meteor shower is an annual event that occurs from mid-July to late August, with its peak usually happening around mid-August. It is one of the best meteor showers to view because of its consistency and the extended time in which it occurs.

    I think I saw 2 when I was stargazing on holiday in New Zealand. It was in the night of 11 to 12 august ‘23. It was totally spectacular on top of all the constellations we saw!

    Just came back from a walk. Sitting in a park, in spite of the light pollution and bad air quality, I saw three shooting stars between 3:25 and 3:54 am. The last one blazed luminously, perhaps not as vivid as in the countryside, but still very luminous, with a long tail, and lasted a good second. Thanks for your video!

    The stars just look like a bunch of dots to me. I still wonder how people can look up and see shapes. To me there are enough little dots up there to draw anything your heart desires. I know very few constellations or stars like Orions Belt, big and Little Dipper, North Star, etc. but I find what’s up there both beautiful and very amazing!

    Thank you for your information rich videos on space and the universe.
    From your videos I learned about a lot of constellations and how to find them in the sky.
    About this video, I can find casseopia very easily and also I can spot Capella but I am still unable to properly identify Auriga and Perseus. I am still training my brain to identify it. Hopefully I will be able to do it soon.
    And eagerly waiting for the peak of perseids meteor shower.

    This video is amazing! Thank you for making it! It gets confusing for me on where to find this due to working out of state so much! I get turned around! The August Showers have always been my favorite because they have an amazing display, we always drug out the lawn chairs and pillows and snacks to watch this! Question from the space to earth position? Respectfully ❤ if I’m in Florida, facing the Atlantic Ocean; Are they north, south, east or west?🙂

    I got excited about seeing meteor shower so I checked Sky Safari app. Apparently Perseus is visible around 4-5am where I live. If I get the urge to wake up early and check them out I’ll report back.
    Thanks for teaching me about comets, meteoroids, meteors and meteorites. I came up with a memory aid I hope you will enjoy.
    Meteoroids are on roids, so they’re boosting through space.
    Meteors burn up as they enter the atmosphere, so their voice goes ‘ors. (hoarse)
    Meteorites hit the ground, so you ask them “are you ‘rite?” (Alright)

    From my home in a densely populated city with restricted viewing by trees and 2 story houses I still saw 7 meteors looking east by northeast from 3:30 AM to 4:15AM. One was a very short flash of dim light, four were longer very distinct streaks , and two were very bright, not sure how long as they disappeared behind my neighbors big house. This was the first meteor shower I have seen in 40+ years. Still remember camping with my best buds and seeing hundreds in single sittings with unobstructed country skies. Gotta stop and smell the roses more often.

    I wish we could see a graphic showing both the constellation Perseus and the incoming orbit of the Swift-Tuttle remnants. I assume that’s where they are coming in from but seeing it would be nice. The meteors can be seen over a week or more. In that period, the constellations have moved. Is that reflected in where the radiant appears in the sky during that time? Could someone show that? Seeing a graphice ahowing the comet’s orbit as seen from outside the solar system and then seeing a graphic showing the constellations and the meteor radiants is nice but there’s a disconnect, in my head at least, between the two. But thank you for this video.

    • @learnthesky
      @learnthesky  Před rokem

      The radiant will always come from Perseus. That doesn’t change throughout the weeks. But when you observe, you will notice meteors all across the sky. Looking in the north and east directions are best.
