I wonder if you put a mirror outside of a window they're used to looking through, if they're unfamiliar with mirrors, how they would respond to it like that. My cat was a stray that came looking for help, and got adopted into the home. He used to be freaked out by TV for a while. If it was a bird or something he would charge at it and get into hunt mode, but if it was a dog or something he didn't like, he would hiss and growl and hide. Eventually he accepted that there's nothing actually there. But what's interesting is how they respond to things that don't fit their understanding of the world or go against it, like how lions don't attack on safaris as long as you remain in the vehicle.

It is highly unusual for a cat to interact with a mirror like that. It must be a particularly intelligent cat. Most cats will either ignore their reflection or be momentarily startled by the image of what they percieve as another cat. But without the smell they usually lose interest quickly. This cat appears to be actually contemplating its own image. Very cool. Whoever owns this kitty has a very special friend indeed. 😊❤🐈‍⬛

My cats have been like that too. When someone was facing the bathroom mirror & I did something, like hold their comb, they would turn their head towards me & the comb to get a better look, an affirmative, you're getting "brushed," which they liked. That's just one example. None of them ever seemed to be otherwise reactive to the mirror. They just seemed know it was a replication of real life. Likewise, if I came into a mirrored room & they saw me in that mirror, they'd turn around to greet me.
I believe that, just like with humans, their intelligence is on a continuum. Some have it, some don't, & some will.

Wild cats generally don't, as cats as a species aren't smart enough, and never needed such intelligence. Cats had to make sacrifices on their skull to accomodate stronger biting mucles, and their skull is designed to be strong and hold those muscles. But such adaptations leave less room for brainy matter. Domesticated cats on the other hand need to survive in our complicated envrioment, and appearently are evolving to get that little bit extra 'oumph' in their skulls. And since we feed them, they get away with having less biting power. Or at least they don't hunt things as big or bigger than themself, and have an easier life.

Technically, they do. But usually takes them time to realize its their own reflection because cats are territorial animals by nature. Their first instinct at seeing themselves in the mirror is that it is another cat that has inveded their territory. Over time, they will realize its their own reflection, and eventually they stop paying attention to mirrors alltogether.

I'm sure a lot of animals have seen images reflecting in water and understand that trees don't grow upside-down. I bet a lot of cats, especially in urban environments have come across mirrors or reflections of themselves in glass and they don't react like this cat because it's a mundane experience for them.

My cat is super intelligent, he uses the mirror to enable him to see areas of the room that he normally can't see. I usually mess with him by playing around behind his head, whilst he is looking at the mirror, and he knows spatially, that its me and where my hands / toys are via the reflection.

      @@0MoTheG What?
I run a whole barrage of tests on my cat for fun. The mirror thing is kinda old for me right now.
He's so used to it, he actually prefers looking at the room via the mirror to see what's behind him.
I do mess around with him, trying to pretend the "me" in the mirror is a different person, but he can always tell.
So yeah no, your observation, or guestimation there is incorrect.
Some cats are pretty stupid though, so its not like every cat can do what mine can tbh. And I've had about 3 cats in my lifetime, and this one is the only one that is smart enough to do this.

Yay! I thought my cat was broken. Some cat's do understand their reflection. My cat Boo did the first time I showed her my closet mirror. She never acted like it was another cat. She even investigated her teeth and ears, she also tried to brush her hair with her paw. Cat's are as smart as two year old children. My Boo even knows Spanish, French, Garmin and a little Dutch. She sits on command without treat's. I think she thinks cuddling and booping my nose is a treat. I don't know. She also protected me from an intruder once. She jumped at the dude's face and growled like a monster. He ran out and left with bloody neck and hands. She was like a kitty ninja, knight of the furbabies defender of the apartment complex. 👍❤️ That's my Boo baby. I do believe some cat's make emotional attachments to certain people they trust. That's why we occasionally hear about how a cat protected it's family.

(Alas, he has been gone for a decade. Only cat I ever had who showed an interest in manipulating his environment for purely aesthetic reasons - he would move decorative and fragrant items around until he liked their positioning.
