  • A complete look and review of the 30 Gallon V-twin oil lubricated air compressor from Porter Cable, model PXCM301. While this compressor works great, it needed several upgrades - new oil fill bolt, air drain, oil drain, tank air pressure gauge, and high flow air fitting.

I think the purpose of the 20 minute break in period is to seat the rings. To seat the rings you need two things. Heat and pressure. Changing the oil essentially cooled the pump, therefore, eliminating one of the requirements. You also eliminated the break in oil which helps components to wear in together.

Have had the same one for 3 years...no problem and added a 150 reserve tank to keep up...love the compressor.

Great idea for the oil/air whip hose. I would have fought that forever if I hadn't watched this video. Thanks for the tip!

It looks exactly like the Dewalt compressor accept for the plastic wheels. The oil will damage your rubber drain hose. I have a 30 gallon Campbell Hausfield parallel twin air compressor. I took off the metal belt guard and used the plastic one from my previous compressor to reduce noise. I also draw the suction through a piece of 5/8 heater hose to reduce the intake bark. My pump up time from empty to 140 PSI is five minutes. I find the comprssor vibration will destroy the gauge calibration over a few years.

Great video. I wish i had found this before I bought my deWalt 27g oil free compressor. This looks to be much better and I like the drain mod. With mine I have get on my knees to reach it.
One thing I might mention, it is unwise to use a 14 awg extension cord on a 15 amp load. You have to consider voltage drop over the length and may result in up to a 10 volt drop.. Hard on motors to operate and you can have motors stall or be damaged. I won't own a 14 awg extension cord for this reason. I always buy good quality 12 awg cords.
    Thanks for the video!

Well done. Super frustrating to have to "fix" a brand new unit. I am considering the same compressor. All of them in that price range have the same issues. Great review and video. Thanks for putting in the time.

The magnetic plug should be at the bottom where the oil with any metalic particles pools. Its like the oil pan of a car.

I have the almost identical compressor, except mine says Kobalt on it. I also made a tank drain, as well as a manifold/air dryer. And i have never changed the oil in it once.

I have the kobalt also. I believe they are the same. Just different name.

*After years of hauling around a large,💫 **allabout.wiki/PORTER** heavy, loud dewalt air compressor (that ironically was advertised as quiet, supposedly 78dB), I bought this. Facepalm. While it is not ‘silent’, I find myself chuckling every time I use it, sparing all my neighbors the terror of my former compressor. I use for inflating tires, impact wrench, finish nailers. Absolutely love it. And I store it under the garage sink in a 24” cabinet. I paired with a coil 1/2”, instead of a my former 50’ 5/8” hose that I had to lug across the yard from the shed, unpleasantly uncoil.... this little guy is light and portable; just a joy. Impact wrench is still capable of easing lug bolts, flywheel bolts, crank pulleys... just allow for a tiny bit of recovery now and then.*

Excellent video! I like the tweaks that you implemented, especially the oil drain valve. I am thinking about buying the smaller 20 gallon horizontal unit. When you started the compressor it sounded pretty quiet, although I assume the camera knocked down the level a bit.
Now that you've had this compressor for a while, what are your thoughts? Do you feel that it's a very good value? Any issues encountered with it? Thanks!

No regrets, it still runs great. I make it a point to change the oil every year, leave the bottom drain line open when not in use, and turn it on for a few seconds to clear out condensation every few days during summer. Humidity really can collect in the unit, but that is true of all compressors not kept in an air conditioned / de humidified environment.

@@OnTheWorkbench Thanks for the reply! These units seem to be the best value on the market (I don't count Harbor Freight as value since it's a crapshoot on if you get one lasts 6 months or 6 years).
      Cheers!

EXCELLENT video!😄👍(VERY thorough👏 [your thoroughness made/led me to subscribe, BTW 😂👍]) - could or would you probably think 🤔 about adding a “Auto” Water 💦 value? (at the bottom).
I hear👂that most “High-End” [super-expensive] compressors have this type of auto water values at the bottom (so that you don’t have to “manually” open/close the screw [or ball-value, like you have], all the time/continually).
Tell me what you think 🤔about having/installing a Auto Water Value at the bottom (I’d be interested in knowing which auto value [type or brand] that you’d recommend [or any of/from your audience]).😄

one of the WORST air compressors Ive ever used! This thing takes 20 minutes to fill up. Our first one had a pin hole in one of the cylinder heads. Got it replaced and the second one takes forever to build and trips our breakers in shop, house, and a buddy of mine has one that does the same thing.
