For the illustrator step of vector animation, the OVERLORD plugin is amazing, removes the step of layering out your vectors and importing into AE, you just hit the icon and your AI vectors drop right into your AE scene, it's saved me countless hours of pointless setup work, I use it daily!

Thank you bro! They just have different uses. The pen tool works with shape layers and the brush tool needs to be used on a solid layer. Both of which give you different controls.
