Sizing and Installing Hydronic Expansion Tanks
Vložit
- čas přidán 8. 09. 2024
- Hydronic expansion tanks are sized on boiler NET output BTU's and the type of radiation. It is also important to install the expansion tank properly - mounted vertically in downward position only. Ensure the piping can support the entire weight of the tank when full of water.

Mikey pipes! Which lazer level was this??
Going the extra mile, Mikey with that laser level and getting the job done! FACTS!,,,,
Nice work Mike and smart adding the isolation valve. Figure that tank will weigh 75 to 80 lbs while it is operable and about 125 when it fails. Water weigh roughly 10 lbs per gallon.👍👍🇨🇦
You could have put a double bend offset on the 3/8” rod. Also, I believe it’s Dewalt that makes what they call the “smart DI (drop in anchor drill bit” for the sds+ that has a stopper at the exact depth of the drop in. And it has an attachment that you put over the drill bit that you use to hammer the anchor in with the hammer drill. It’s really nice.
you could have done two hangers in V shape to avoid the pipe above.
alt 1: used half of two larger clevises to go around the pipe (bolted together with short bolts)
alt 2: just hang it from the larger pipe above(clevis to clevis) and that pipe above to the ceiling with a clevis against the one below.
alt 3: I'm less thrilled with, but gently bend the rod(long radius bends) out around the pipe. if not gentle bends it can be weakened and even then it may flex enough to overload the nipples/coupling and break off suddenly. especially the newer "junk" brass fittings.
I'm happy
Palm beach, FL…..AHH MAN, that’s 3.5 hrs away from me, BUMMER!
If we’re closer in service area, w/ way do business, after the initial meet and greet and 1st maintenance call, if better t(an company use now, which wouldn’t be hard to beat, imo, woulda have most likely gotten 45% of entire HOA live in.
Well, Palm Beach gets you in FL, and that don’t mean can’t open 2nd shop in my area in the future😉
Anywho, CONGRATS & HAPPY FOR YOU AND Fam, Team, Company for expanding to SC and FL.
Cheers✌🏻
Mikey Pipes you make my day. I think I love you. Well, at least I love your channel!
Woot woot, my evening dose of Mikey pipes, thanks for sharing.
Mikey...Small world! Back in the mid 80's I shot Amtrol's National Advertising films for 2 years...Spokesman was Claude Akins.
The 30 wasn’t cross threaded, if you look closely the nipple that was welded to that 30 tank was slightly angled…. Manufactured defect.
I love clevis hangers, nice support !
i noticed the date on the 30 lol, doesn't look like you planned to put in the 90 ha ha , love ya
Hi pipe doctor like the way you and guys work I'm in the Bahamas also ac technician.

If frankie isn't testing hes guessing
🔧 You did what you had to do Mickey and the hell with the rest🔧
Temp installs of anything is not perfect but is better than nothing, I have install a temp power outlet just to get power for for a user before while looked down on but is done in when needed or ordered by the upper ups.
I needed one of those tanks couldn’t find one so I installed two 60s together. 😂
Awesome stuff I learn so much but I’m in Louisiana. Probably will never work on one
its fun to extend with an ips ball valve instead of a coupling
those expansion tank isolation valves are sexy AF though
Laser ? COOL !
Mr Mackey pikes you going to use that 30 on another job. It should still be good. 👍🤟🌭🍺🍺
1:27 are those party plates on that "range rover" weaving around the lane and hitting the lines or is that just a yellow state plate? (lol)
Yellow plates with red letters here = party plates, follow them to the party 🤣🤣 "hic hic hic"
Why wouldn’t you just offset the threaded rod with a bender?
Trolls will be trolls. Let it be. At the end u did the right thing
I have a tank sizing card in my tool bag along with I have no idea why anymore a vent damper recall serial number card. That said, I quickly go from an extroll 30 to a floor mount, just because anything larger is just to heavy to change. Ya, been hit or miss on using the air compressor to get all the water out. In a lot of cases, there is no easy way to support them and the concern of a 60 or worse 90 filling and snapping something, just easier to go to the floor mount.
I agree, #60 max suspended and preferable anything over #30 a floor model, unless the space doesn't permit that. I mean I've had to squeeze in 5 suspended #30's before in a bad location! talk about a cluster-fork-mess. the end result was still better than all the other "proposed" plans.(lol) sometimes I think to "deep space" outside the box levels.
I should add, all five were "horizontal" and in a radial pattern (star shape). it's still that way as far as I know and they just replace tanks when failed. it was oversized by "two" tanks just for added headroom and ease of repair. nothing else would fit, unless someone starts making a pancake style flying saucer tank 🤣🤣
yeah, I'm rather nuts, but git-r-done-son.
Great install Mike and forget the haters they are just armchair quarterbacks
The 30 would work but fail prematurely correct?
What is the purpose of the accumulator? Dampening pressure spike?
Hello Mikey pipes
Hi Mikey. Hope you are well.
@@PipeDoctor pretty good. Thank you.
Hello Mike
should have went with a floor model tank, once over a "60". much easier to set them down than fiddle around hanging them. if they water log from bad bladder, far less headache to move(dolly) when you don't want to make a huge mess. I don't like anything over a #30 hanging myself, unless the space is very tight.
What's the purpose of that tank?
@@PipeDoctor thanks.
@Mikey Pipes - Pipe Doctor Plumbing & Heating & Air
1:41 I guess the ppl who said something about the expansion tank being wrong size didn’t watch the entire video! And listened to what ya said…..or missed what you said 🤷🏼
B/C I REMEMBER you saying Mikey, you know you had wrong size after looking at the 1 page data sheet fr9m expansion tank AMD YOU SAID needed a 90 and don’t have in truck and would need to c9me back w/ the correct size. Was in the video, unless I’m hearing things, lol.
So, think most ppl “know” you wouldn’t install a system (or repair a system) w/ improper parts etc……BUT IF YOU DID, it would be for good reason, which would be: unable to get part or didn’t have w/ you; BUT than you’d be back to rectify the situation to MAKE THINGS RIGHT and do the job the way supposed to be done; b/c your Mikey Pipes the pipe doctor and it’s your company’s core value, along w/ TESTING!
So, don’t listen to those comments (know 1st hand how hard that actually is, it sucks) and keep doing right thing paying attention to details and doing awesome great work👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers✌🏻
I so want to come work for you
@@PipeDoctor Ok my only thing is is i have to relocate lol from Neberska
I know supply houses that don't have Extrol 90s in stock. So why would you have one in your van?
I installed 2 60s together when I couldn’t find one 😂
@@richlong4119 And most residential homes do not have 280K BTU systems in them.
did you say at the end you swapped out the 30 for a 60??? uhmm. where them trolls at?? lol
the extrol always brings out the trolls
🤙🏻
Right on brother love the videos also enjoy listening to you cut the dead weight out of your company. Lazy fucks
Ok Mikey now I have to brake your chops. Here we go, the hanger is steel and the pipe is brass. Dissimilar metals are a no no. Lol.

Trolls mast die😅 good job👍 молодцом)
Do It Right? Why did you use black pipe ? Mixing metals. Now you need a dialectric union. Don't mix metals.
😂😅😂🥃🥃🍺🍺

Chicken dinner, you did the right thing. I've seen installers say they will be back and guess what they never do.
