    An interesting thing about apples is their seeds. No matter what kind of apple u have, each of the seeds has a totally random genetic profile.. which is why that apple he mentioned was discovered in an orchard of Gala apples (I guess the random biodiversity benefitted them in the wild). That's why u can't use the seeds of any apple to grow a tree of the same kind. Rather, they have to use cultivars (clones), by splicing a sapling onto another baby tree. Sometimes, people just throw random handfuls of seeds to see what grows (which is how the Granny Smith apple was discovered in Australia).

      Honestly most trees are grafted due to the time and cost value as well. It would take 10 years to get any fruit if the nursery sold you a tree that was planted from seed. Trees are also grafted to get certain attributes you would want as a gardener (size, and cold hardiness). A good example is with cherries a gisela 3 root stock on cherries will grow 8-10 feet and a gisela 5 root stock will grow 10-12 feet while a standard cherry tree will grow 20+ feet. That is why you often see x variety but x root stock.

I wasn't talking about economics or cost-efficiency; I was talking about how fascinating the natural genetics of apple trees are.. I honestly don't care too much about the ways that humans manage to exploit nature; rather, I'm interested in the fascinating processes of nature, itself.

    My grandfather had a fine orchard on his farm with about forty different varieties of apples. He also grew pears, peaches, plums, cherries, currants, blackberries and figs. I was a lucky kid to get to eat all of those yummy fruits. I wish I knew the names of all my favorites, I don't think I ever did, which is a shame. I like crisp juicy interesting apples, my mom likes apples she describes as mellow, it's amazing how we enjoy such different flavors and textures. I'd love to go to an apple tasting, that'd be awesome!

    That Blondie variety sounds absolutely delightful. The juiciness of a Korean pear with a floral note and a touch of honey? That combination sounds like it could make a heavenly cocktail, juice or even a perfume!

    I've gotten pretty good at calling what his Sweet/Tart scores are going to be based on his reaction.
    That speaks to his consistency! It also probably speaks to my lack of a hobby.

    Antique watermelons are also pretty good. Here in the states, they've been bred to be as seedless and sturdy/hard as possible, and watermelons here have pretty much lost a lot of those more nuanced flavors and sweetness.

    Apples that grow in areas where there is a lot of summer rain , or from orchards who water a lot to get the most weight are boring .Apples that get good spring rain and not in the summer or until harvest are like some exotic fruit and they are very sweet . Flavor is lost when they receive too much water.

    Calling apples boring always reminds me of those relatively small and very sweet apples my grandparents used to grow when I was a kid. They were easily better than candy.

      I always call fruit nature's candy. A lot of fruit tastes like candy because of the sugar content. A regular honey crisp apple has 10 grams of sugar and 300 cholesterol. On nutrition ix it says a serving of 5 rainier cherries will give 1.1 grams of sugar. The cherries don't seem like much until you realize that cherries have a decent sized pit so you are likely eating a good amount of them.

      nakrul987 Here in the UK the peaches we get nowadays taste like fuzzy nothing. I haven’t had a nice peach since I was a child in the early 1980s.

    Some other really fantastic apples are Suncrips and Crimson Crisps, my two favorites.
    Sun crisps taste like you’re eating spiced apple cider. They are yellow with a brownish blush. Crimson crisps are really crunchy, bright, and are much more refreshing rather than super sweet

      I’m told that applewood-smoked bacon is smoked over wood mostly from cut-down orchards of Red Delicious. It’s a plausible story but I’m not sure that it’s true.

      I must admit I have never eaten a Red Delicious I enjoyed. I find Golden Delicious are delicious. There is a perfect golden but still crisp sweetness that I have tasted when it is picked off the tree fully ripe, and eaten in the orchard, with the peel warm from the sun and the flesh cool and juicy. The sad greenish flavourless spheres that are picked under-ripe haven't had a chance to develop flavour on the tree, and lose their crispness in storage.
      TLDR: 1: Golden Delicious don't deal with the supermarket well.
      2: Picking fruit for an orchardist who cares about the quality of fruit provides access to peak fruit!

    This is a good idea for a series, you should do more apple videos for sure --- !
    Antique apples can be great, but I feel like most of the varieties i've tried taste closer to what I consider a standard apple taste. I'm into more of the 'mad scientist' apples, if you will. My favorite being Cripps Pink/Pink Lady. I also find the Sweetango, Opal, and Cosmic Crisp to be especially unique.
    The Cosmic Crisp is more just unique in appearance, texture, and shelf life- many places would sell out within a few hours of opening when it was released here in Washington State in late 2019. It was developed at Washington State University. It has those little dots, reminiscent of starts, which are actually lenticels- the same kind of dots found on tree bark. Fun fact- lenticels function as a pore, providing a pathway for the direct exchange of gases between the internal tissues and atmosphere through the bark, which is otherwise impermeable to gases.

    Is it just my area or have MacIntosh apples disappeared from supermarkets? I remember seeing them as one of the four main apples. Macs, Red or gold Delicious, or granny smith were all that used to be in the supermarkets. Now I see more variety but no Macs.

      If you like MacIntosh apples, you should try Macoun apples. They are babies of MacIntosh and another antique apple called Jersey Black. They have the juicyness of the MacIntosh but with a more complex, sweet flavor.

    This reminds me of the best apple I've ever had, it was a tree growing at the horticultural college I went to. Frustratingly hard to find any information about it though, I think it was called Wisley Crab, although that very well could just be a description, a crab/seedling from Wisley gardens. It tasted like berries but only kept for about a week after picking and was best straight from the tree

    Jared, I'm not sure if you're able to source apples from overseas but here in Australia we have the "pink lady" variety, which has nice sweet/tart balance with unique aromatic flavours going on. To date it's my favourite variety - I'm a real apple lover! Newer varieties like Bravo and Eve are quite bland.

    I wasn't expecting to see a familiar apple in one of these! The Cameo is at my local grocery store every year, I didn't realize it was an antique
    If you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend an Opal apple. They're not rare or antique, but they're easily my favorite Washingtonian apple

    One of my early childhood memories (and more later) are of the Graves Mountain Apple Festival each fall in Virginia. And from that also I remember that winesaps were my favorite apples when I was tiny. All through my adult life, though I almost never encounter winesaps, I get happy just hearing them mentioned. ;)
    Side note, I just watched a permaculture video less than 24 hours ago of a guy who has been advocating for more of an agriculture of farmers in various locals to raise apples and other woody crops from seed and test out what is healthiest in their area and in the process end up with the advantage of not getting crops wiped out when monoculture farming inevitably has new pests and new moments of catastrophic wipeouts, like has happened sometimes in the past... but also in the process getting new local varieties in the case of apples, and many other woody plants of nut and fruit crops. I hope lots of people follow his lead all across the land!

    Honey crisp is quite common now, but it's honestly pretty much my favorite fruit to eat. I mean there are better fruit, but it's something that you can just eat as much as you want without getting bored. It's in that sweet spot of texture, water content, sweetness and bitterness.

    The sweetest apple I’ve come across is Smitten, it’s like candy. I have pet birds and they only want that one. They won’t even eat Braeburn, not sweet enough I guess

      Never had it, i work in produce and their “once bitten, forever smitten” cute little catch phrase written on the box isnt enough for people to buy them i guess lol. They usually sit on the shelf until they go bad. Will definitely try it now.

      Pink Lady is crszy sweet, there's a few like it... they've really worked hard on those extremely sweet varieties, for me it's a little too much but it's popular and patented even.

    I wish you'd tried cooking the Ida Red. I'm curious about the statement that it would turn pink when cooked.
    Also, these apple episodes are especially interesting to me, because my father has his own plant nursery here in Denmark, where he particularly specializes in old Danish and Nordic (and some German) species of apples, selling trees of the species that grow the best and in the healthiest way for local areas around the country. He has a small grove of a bunch of different apple trees (as well as pears, plums, and cherries), and I bet you could have a lot of fun just wandering around trying them all!

    Ida red is pretty common where I live. I see it in most supermarkets here. In terms of other varieties, Ambrosia is by far my favorite apple.

    I will plant an Appeltree. Its Name is "Altländer Pfannkuchenapfelbaum". An old Chance seedling from 1840. Translated it mean: "Oldland Pancake Appeltree". I love appel Pancakes. My grandfather made them with sliced Apples when i was at the Kindergarten in the morning. There are a lot of good old Appels out there. I also love Boskop or Granny Smith. Boskop is recomended for Red Cabbage.

    See if you can get some of the russet apples some time. They all look rather like round potatoes, but they have an excellent taste. Hoople's Antique Gold, Ashmead's Kernel, Hudson's Golden Gem.

    Now someone needs to get you an apple you mentioned, a Cox’s Orange Pippin, famous English dessert apple and ancestor of many, many varieties including the Winecrisp. But it’s rarely cultivated outside of Britain and a few other places in Western Europe, and might be impossible to get in the USA...

    If you think the cameo is big, look at varieties like "Aport" (up to 1kg or 2.2 lbs per apple) or one called "Riesenboiken" (that literally mean giant boiken-apple they can grow to over 15cm or 6 inches in width)

    I wonder if you can get your hands on some New Zealand apples. My favourites are Pacific Rose / Sciros (pink, sweet, and slightly astringent dessert apple. Apparently now also grown in Washington) and the new-to-me Lemonade Apple (yellow, sweet, slightly tart, vaguely lemonadey flavour, very refreshing).

    As for the tasting like super market brands I do think there is something to growing them. I plan to grow rainier and bing cherries because I know I like them but I can save on cost with buying a tree. There is something about having a crop that will grow in your garden that you know you will not be disappointing with the flavor. Apples seem boring but they have a interesting history to it. If you were to plant a normal apple tree it will outlive you or I. I have heard of apple trees living 300 years. Also statistically someone else will have a crabapple or apple tree within 2 miles so you don't really need a cross pollinator with apples. I do think they are one of the least interesting you grow though. I am starting to grow cherries next year and have thought of growing peaches though with their low lifespan it may not be worth it for the peaches. I have never thought I wanted a apple to though.

    Central Asian apples are quite soft/mealy and with a very mild taste but they are extremely perfumed! Keeping a bunch around in a room is like using air freshener! The apples introduced by the British are the standard, sweet and crisp variety but lacking any real scent.

      @@MrGlennJohnsen i think 2000 dies annually from virus infections. So its a lil worse i assume, but only for the elderly. 3 times(your number, i havent looked) the mortality rate is an amazing thing, considering the health care here you would be suprised of how many would already be long gone without their medicines.

    How is an apple created in the '90's an "antique"? That is a modern cultivar. "Antique" apples would be Abermarle's Pippin or Rome or Jersey Black.

    I'm too old and have lost my teeth. So now i cook my apples. They remind me of how beautiful they are. But, thanks, but no when it is time to just crunch on a raw apple. We have cider, we have apple butter, we have dried apples, we have orchards. We have Johnny Appleseed!

      Wolf River, Pound Sweet, and Swaar (?) are known for size. Described as better baked or dried than fresh though.

      Given that you usually have to add a lot of sugar to get the pectin to gel, I would favor a tart yet aromatic (no Granny Smith) variety, or an aromatic one + lemon juice. King David or Dolgo crab should work. I would like to try Ashmead's Kernel, Wickson crab, Karmijn du Sonneville (sp?), or Mother or Smokehouse with lemon juice. On the other hand, the Skillcult channel has a howto video on 19th century shelf stable "apple butter" (more like apple cheese along the lines of quince cheese--a hard, sliceable paste) made purely of sweet apples (as with a syrup or honey, the stability comes from having so dang much sugar that it is hypertonic to everything and mold that tries to grow, desiccates). In cooking you can probably also rescue even bland trash with the right spices.

      Bramley are cookers that are still nice eaten out of hand. Very sharp even when ripe.

      Gravenstein! More commonly used as a cooking apple. It is really tart with low sweetness and has a dense, hard flesh.

    Glad to see you trying apples, but to be honest, this orchard isn't growing the really good ones. None of these apples would be on anyone's top ten. It seems like most orchards go for quantity, ease of cultivation, processing, and storage, etc over quality when choosing their varieties.
