  • Welcome back paediatric squads!
    In this video I explained the definition, pathophysiology, presentations, causes, investigations and management of apnea of prematurity.
    Apnea of prematurity is a very common disease in preterm baby, we can always encounter this in NICU, this is a bread and butter in neonatology.
    Apnea of prematurity is a diagnosis of exclusion, we need to rule out other differential diagnosis of apnea in preterm baby eg. necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, hypoglycemia, anemia, intraventricular haemorrhage etc.
    We can treat this with respiratory support eg. CPAP, mechanical ventilation. Also we can give caffeine to these babies.
    The prognosis of apnea of prematurity is generally good. Usually it resolves by the time of 37 weeks of gestation.

    Nice simple presentation . Is Nelson textbook adequate for neonatologiy during residency ?

      I will recommend Gomella's Neonatology, it is short and concise, also have simple explanation on the problem you may encounter during on call hours. My video also took reference from it. If you are interested, you may buy one via amazon. amzn.to/49RdhSg

      Many thanks for response . I have Cohorty but I find it hard to remember because it is presented pointwise all over and big volume . How is Gomella’s ?

      How many pages are there in this book ?

    • @paedisquad
      @paedisquad  Před 2 měsíci

      @@elinashrestha5461 I would say it has plenty of words as well, but it’s clear and precise. You do not need to revise from page 1 to the end. It also has lots of “problem based topics” eg. Bloody stool, eye discharge, SOB in neonate etc. I think you may revise the related topic after you encounter a problem from your patient. That will benefit you the most.

      So are you talking about Gonella’s or Cohorty ?

    Thank you...but can apne effects baby weight???

    • @paedisquad
      @paedisquad  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks! Generally apnea does not affect baby’s weight. But on the other hand, preterm baby with lower birth weight are associated with higher chance of apnea of prematurity.

    Is it life threatening? And what is the normal frequency of apnea in a day that is considered safe? My baby is born in 27 weeks

    • @paedisquad
      @paedisquad  Před 6 měsíci

      Most of the time it is not life threatening, usually can improve after caffeine. However, if it happens frequently, baby may need more ventilatory support eg. Intubation. For the frequency, it will depend on the age of the baby now.
