Should have used a bendy straw with more of the long section. The elevation change is what makes a siphon work. Put the longer end of the straw into the soda, the short drinking end of the straw into the empty glass. Getting the soda in the straw to begin with is what gets the siphon to start flowing When I was a kid, I remember people using hoses, sucking on the hose to draw low pressure, to draw the liquid through to get it started. But if you can start with liquid in the atraw/hose, that helps. The elevation change is crucial. If both glasses are level, it will siphon until the liquid level is the same in both. If you place one glass below the other, you will get more liquid to flow into it. Atmospheric pressure is whats making it work.
This actually does work and the lower you have the straw below the other liquid’s surface level the faster it will drain. you can actually do it really fast if you have a bucket of water then put a hose in the water and let the hose fill with water. Then cover both ends of the hose and bring one end of the hose outside the bucket and bring the hose lower than the water’s surface level and when you release that end the water will drain out continuously until the end of either side of the hose is above the water surface level and you’ll notice as the water level gets lower the speed at which it drains will get slower and slower due to torcelli’s law.

I use to get a garden hose, cut the bottom off a 2-liter bottle, connect the hose to the bottle top, and the weight of the water, and water's cohesion, and gravity allowed me to empty out the aquarium. It wont be nearly as effective as your project, but my suggestions, should make it work a little (soda glass slightly higher would be even better) I also have a clogged Air Conditioner that I put a paper towel in the water basin, to be used as a wick, so I can drain excess water vs having a waterfall in my home office from the excess water during defrost mode. And yes, it literally looked like a waterfall prior to me using this trick and buying me a couple of days to get someone to help me lift this monster AC to clean the duct.
