  • ****READ BELOW FOR UPDATES SINCE VIDEO WAS CREATED****
    This is a quick unboxing video and short review of the Fujitsu T902...sorry about the quality of the video - I used a poor camera which actually caused several issues for me. Anyways, several clips and nearly a week later, here is what I have.
    I didn't go into much detail regarding the user experience of the software itself, however, as I said in the video, if there were any features or tests that you wanted me to include in an additional video, feel free to leave a comment and let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.
    Update - The computer arrived about 2.5 weeks ago, though I've only been using it for the last week as I had originally planned to return it when I found out I wouldn't be able to configure a mSATA SSD, but after some thought, I ended up taking it back out of the box and decided to keep it and order a 256GB SSD for the main drive instead. Here is a quick update.
    Overall, I'm really impressed with this thing. The honest fact is, there is not another tablet that offers a capacitive touch experience within the Windows environment that comes with the CPU, graphics, and I/O that heavy users require. This, unfortunately, is also the reason for the steep price...but I really think it's worth it. Everything is, for the most part, seamless. Though I am hoping for a better touch experience with Windows 8 which will hopefully be more fluid when it comes to touch interactions (zoom is still choppy in most applications). That's the only real grievance I have with the touch experience. Fujitsu included some useful apps which help to optimize your touch/mouse hybrid experience, for instance - there is a touch launcher app which gives you the ability to toggle certain features quickly from a sidebar, and one of them includes the ability to quickly disable the touch digitizer allowing only the stylus and mouse to interact with the PC. This is useful when trying to write with the stylus, so that your hand can rest on the screen at the same time.
    Other than that, I am also getting used to the chiclet keyboard, and I have also noticed some minor software bugs. For instance, when I go from switching between tablet mode and laptop mode, sometimes the laptop touchpad's integrated scroll becomes reversed. But a quick reboot fixes it everytime, and by quick, I mean SSD quick :) And also, with some gestures, I find that different unintended events occur - for instance, the menu bar gets pulled down every once in a while within Chrome when I am scrolling down, but I'm thinking this might have to do with pre-configured touch gesture actions which are adjustable, I just haven't gotten around to checking it out.
    So, that's all I got so far. Again, wouldn't trade this thing for anything. I just wish they would have allowed a quad-core chipset. Hope it helps!
    *Update (2) * - So now I have been using the laptop for about 5 weeks, and there are some notable points I wanted to make for you all. I'm still overall impressed with the laptop, however, I've seen the following additional issues:
    The whole glitch thing where when I'm in Chrome and I try and scroll down with the touch screen, it brings up the native Windows tool's menu....super annoying. Also, it will randomly zoom out when only using one finger, but mainly only seems to be an issue on Google Drive (again in Chrome) and also isn't super responsive in some apps when it comes to zooming in and out (particularly Chrome)....since this is a software thing, I'm not too concerned as again, I'm banking on Windows 8 here. But I thought it would be worth mentioning.
    Additionally - the edge of the screen doesn't seem to be very responsive to the pen. Like it can't recognize quick movements very well. If I track over at a 'slower' rate, it looks fine, but when I speed up (liking writing notes in OneNote), it doesn't log all strokes accurately. This only seems to be within about 1/4" of the edge of the screen, so really not THAT big of a deal, and hopefully a driver or software upgrade of some sort might fix? I don't know. But I thought it would be worth mentioning.
    And finally, battery isn't stellar. Looks like I'm getting about 3.5, maybe 4 hours out of both batteries installed, though I am only charging them to 80% to conserve the life of the batteries, so add on another hour to the total time if you choose to fully charge the batteries. Again, something you all might want to know before any big purchases. Unfortunately, the modular 'extended' battery is only 2800 mah, which really isn't that large - would have helped a lot to make it bigger, but may have added to overall width of machine? Who knows...

    Great overview, thank you. Quick side note - the modular plastic bracket is for weight saving in lieu of leaving your CD ROM behind,

    Yeah no problem man. I'm strongly considering this tablet, and this video has helped a lot, especially since there still aren't any professional reviews out there as far as I know, and that you get back to any questions is even better =)

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 11 lety

    No - it's completely seamless. The pen is prioritized over touch inputs so basically finger-touch is disabled whenever the pen is detected. This is obviously aimed at improving the pen experience better given that your hand will usually be resting on the screen whenever you are writing/sketching with the pen. But there is zero lag - there are both in an 'always on' state, it's just that it doesn't recognize touch inputs whenever the pen is detected.

    You got it! Glad it helped! I can't tell you how long I waited for CNET or somebody to do a review on this thing before I bought it, but it never happened. So I figured I would just do it myself.

    Just to elaborate a little further, I'm not at all really experienced with graphics design, though I am with video editing. I would imagine graphics design does not require nearly the resources as real-time HD video editing does, so I assume it will be fine. If your question was more geared towards 'is the tablet as a whole efficient for graphics design?', instead of performance, I would say absolutely - again, the tablet experience is pretty incredible overall. Hope that answered your question.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    I'm with you 100% - lack of quad core and discrete was disappointing....but this is the best convertible tablet option we are going to find at this point.
    I started using Pinnacle studio for some movie editing stuff and it actually performed pretty well. I think that Cyberlink software was causing a lot of my issues...I haven't done any multi-track editing though - I think that will be the real test. I'll followup when I have.
    And yes, you can configure one of the buttons for screen rotation.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    The viewing angles are actually really good. The fact that it's LED and has Gorilla Glass is probably attributable to this. Contrast and colors seem to be great even from 75 degrees either way, all that seems to suffer is brightness. I feel less qualified to speak to color quality, and I don't know if this thing is considered wide color gamut or not, but I think the colors are also rich and vibrant. I'm not very informed when it comes to screen quality though-I apologize.
    Glad the video helped!

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Sweet man sounds good - also, you can use the modular bay to install another large SSD there as well. You're looking at quite a fee if you are going to install 2 large SSD's, but another option if you need more memory.
    Update me once you've finished your setup and let me know what your boot time is like.

    Second answer - no. If you're main drive is solid state, it won't really be of any use to you to use the mSATA port, unless you just want some (expensive) added storage. Though, it's also good to order Fujitsu's because I believe they will configure your chipset to support RAID configurations which is a must have for multi-drive configurations. Mine doesn't support it, and unfortunately I can't fix this with any software upgrade. But 1 single SSD is good enough for me anyways. Hope this helped.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Sorry - I wasn't ignoring your question. Just thinking about how to answer it haha. Compared to my T5010, it's about the same? I mean you can't see a clear reflection of your yourself when the screen is off/black. It's just slightly blurry I suppose. I mean when the screen is on you can't tell at all, it's very clear/vivid in my opinion. That help?

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    I actually used it for the first time today in class with OneNote (awesome application for the stylus), and it was great! As good as any other pen-enabled device. Waacom has been making these things forever, so they know what they're doing :)
    You also have the ability to calibrate it if you don't like the stock feel.

    They changed the mod bay size and the locking mechanism for the T902? Thanks, that was the info I was looking for. Guess I'm stuck buying the more expensive caddy.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    OneNote - all the way. It's an awesome note taking application - I like it a lot better than Journal. And I don't really do any CAD stuff. Mainly web design/minor amounts of video editing. Hopefully will have time to get back into it so I can speak to the machine's performance when editing multitrack projects.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 11 lety

    Really sorry about the late reply.....I don't actually know if the screen is IPS or not, but the viewing angles are actually really good. I can see/read everything on the screen (including colors) up to like 80 degrees left/right of center (obviously it becomes difficult to actually read text/images at those angles, but the point is its good performance)

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 11 lety

    Windows 8 is awesome on this thing. It really added a ton to the experience. I performed an upgrade which made the process really easy, though I did have some trouble with the Wacom touch display driver. But it really adds a lot to the whole experience. I might do another video soon showing some more stuff (Win 8, Photoshop, other apps)

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    good question bro - the ssd cache works in tandem with a HDD to give you 'ssd like' performance without the pricey upgrade. There is no reason to get the ssd cache if you are going to use an SSD for your main drive - no performance increase at that point. It's also almost just as expensive too since you HAVE to take the Fujitsu upgrade for $125 for only 32GB of cache...

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    No it doesn't....which is really annoying because the ad Fujitsu came out with like a month ago shows that it does. They suck at product management.
    Yes, I'm running Win8 now - the touch is way better. THough I will say I'm still having the issues writing around the edge of the screen (it's not as accurate - slower to respond). You can read about that in the description. Also waiting for Fujitsu to release some more Win8 drivers. But overall, enjoying the environment.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Sorry for the late reply....I'm not sure what you mean? They aren't interchangeable as they use different locking mechanisms are different dimensions...is that what you are talking about?
    And yes - the side tabs are awesome, WAY better then having the clip at the top-center of the screen half of laptop.

  • @OmarBazara
    @OmarBazara Před 12 lety

    Thanks for the great review. I just have two questions for you. First, how much does it take your T902 to boot with the SSD and RAM you installed? And second, what if you install a 265 GB Samsung SSD and order the 32 GB mSSD Cache from Fujitsu is that gonna improve performance?

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 11 lety

    Really sorry about the late reply...I'm sure this isn't relevant anymore, but from what I gathered through hours of research and calling Fujitsu, you can only leverage the mSATA port for ANYTHING if you included the mSATA option when configuring the machine in your purchase from Fujitsu
    If you didn't, then they disable the port altogether. If you did, then technically, I think you could boot from the mSATA drive. I could be wrong though, it might only be manageable with Intel's AMT software

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    It looks like some options are only available on the different models - the customizable 'Corporate' model says it's WWAN upgradeable (though no option present in the customization process as you noted), while the 'High-end Corporate' model which is prefixed at 2,099, doesn't mention anything about the WWAN option, but apparently it comes with an Express Card Slot, which I was not aware of before now.
    I might call them about this myself. I'm really curious why they made this so difficult.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Yeah right? That's why I posted the video. Glad it helped!

  • @Selofain
    @Selofain Před 12 lety

    Since you have both, can you compare the dvd drives for the T5010 vs T902? The modular bay hdd caddy for the T902 is $20 cheaper than for the T901/T5010/etc, and I'd really like to know why. This wouldn't be an issue if Fujitsu didn't severely overprice its accessories.
    Also, good to see the side tabs to keep the display from moving around in tablet mode. Definitely makes up for the lack of release hatch.

    Great video! Just to clearify: Can you use an SSD in the msata port just as an additional or main drive? So you have a C: and a D: drive? Thanks in advance.

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    The SSD plugs into an msata port - which is standard in the machine whether you order the upgrade or not - mine has one and I was able to plug in my 64GB mSATA SSD which I got off of Crucial and everything. However, you cannot use it for anything without Intel's RST software, which you can't configure without RAID config, which Fujitsu blocks from your machine.
    You know, the WWAN option wasn't on mine either...it might be worth a call to Fujitsu on that one - there's no antenna on my machine

    Thanks I appreciate. First answer - on Win7, I think my boot time was around 18 seconds-ish. I should have written it down somewhere because I can't remember. I can atleast say it was LOT faster than when it first came in with the HDD. On Win8 now, its right around 15 seconds. What's funny though is that the shutdown time seems to be a couple seconds faster in Win8 than 7. I know they say it's faster, but I just feel like it's a little slower - again, should have written that stuff down.

    Hi Caderade.. I just recently observed that the screen is not really pure Matte. It has significant glare for it to be a problem outside on a sunny day. i think they tried to matte it, but since gorilla glass, so some glare..
    Did you face similar issue.. and are you using any anti glare screen?

    Sorry for the late reply. I went to one of those sites where it checks if your system can run a certain game and it says that with the i7/hd4000/16gb RAM combo it can handle it. Obviously, that integrated graphics is the weak point but it looks like you will be fine to run, atleast in minimal settings.
    It really is a shame the machine is locked into the integrated card, and that there are no quad-core options. But hope that helps.

    You can and Fujitsu actually made a little utility that includes that functionality, though I have had issues getting it work after I upgraded to Windows 8 (it did work flawlessly in Win 7)
    There might be some other option or setting (maybe in control panel) that allows you to deactivate the touch part of the digitizer, but nothing I know about.

    Hi
    In your video you said if you want the SSD cache, it must be ordered from the factory as they change the BIOS.
    - Does the SSD plug into an msata port or mpci-e slot?
    - if you don't order an SSD, can that space be used for something else?
    - does it come with 3g as standard? Or is that a removable module? I can't see it as an option on the online configurator.
    - is there a flip out antenna on the top right of the screen? I've seen it in some screenshots.

    Well, I never used the t900. I only had its predecessor-the t5010. All of Fujitsu's tablets use Wacom digitizers, so I imagine the touch experience will be similar (the t902 might support more touch inputs with 10). Hardware is obviously improved with the sandybridge chipset, higher resolution screen, USB 3.0, etc.
    As far as an overall comparison? I'm sure the user experience will be comparable to your t900 for basic apps/uses. But again, I've never used the T900

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Well, if it actually is somehow WWAN upgradeable, that would be the same as 3G support (I don't know what radios it could support), though I could be wrong. And again, the express card slot is available, but only on the specially fixed model with the $2099 price tag. Certainly seems like they are limiting their competitive advantage which was providing the convertible tablet PC, which high-end power features...

  • @geckyboy
    @geckyboy  Před 12 lety

    Overall, yeah I think so? It doesn't seem to handle HD video editing when using multiple tracks, and that is with the i7 and 16 GB of RAM....but that's also using Power Director plus or something. I am going to try out Vegas Studio here soon when I pick it up and see if there is an increase in performance. If it doesn't fair well...I would say the processor is the bottleneck.
    As for graphic design goes though, you will be fine. Great tablet experience overall.

  • @utopian201
    @utopian201 Před 12 lety

    Actually 3g is not listed in the spec sheet. I wonder why because with the removal of the expresscard slot and 3g, makes it a bit of a downgrade compared to the t901

    @ragnarok9899 Před 12 lety

    Another question! I feel kind of dumb for asking but I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Does the SSD cache option replace the HDD itself, or is it just something to pair with a spindle drive for a cheaper performance increase? If it's separate, is there any reason to get an SSD Cache drive if I plan to use a regular SSD for main storage?
