  • Abandoned long old train rotting away outside of Chicago, Illinois in Bensenville near O'hare Airport. Nearby there is a railroad crossing without gates, lights, or signals. Near the end, you will see it is an old MARC train on the EMD locomotive which is being used for parts. Join me for some urban exploration and railroad archaeology in this video!

Great adventure, wish I were with you. I love exploring old rail cars and loco’s that looked like an old Burlington northern F9 that was widely used for Chicago area commuter trains

RailROL82 / in this day and age it’s really hard to coordinate something like that with many people having different jobs etc. etc but I would probably suggest a fan meetup at one of the great RR museums around the country like North Carolina transportation museum or the Tennessee valley RR museum in Chattanooga TN and so many more. Just plan it way in advance so the people that could attend would have time to
Make arrangements, I even think the museum may offer some perks like maybe a discounted excursion train trip if available

That BN E-8 has a backstory as to why it is there.
In 1991 the loco was running a casual line from Champaign to Chicago union station. One unlucky pedestrian could not get out of the way in time and was killed.

The two cars behind the E-9 were from the Illinois Central Railroad. Judging from the interior of one of them, it was a dining car. They probably ran on the City of New Orleans, the Panama Limited or the City of Miamy. So sad to see them in that condition. The IC was my favorite railroad. The trains were quite beautiful in their earlier days.

Amazing at times how something that big can be squirreled away with hardly anyone knowing about it. Yeah that E9 spent time in MARC Baltimore service and maybe the cars did to. Metra leased out a lot of equipment including Virginia Rail and possibly someplace out west as there is a string of these in the AZ desert. iPH is in bankruptcy and a broker is selling off the cars on tourist lines and their shops out west. If they lose the lease on this track the cars are instant scrap fodder unless Metra still holds some kind of title. Excellent tracking skills in Chi Town

The locomotive looks more like a EMD E9. I can't tell from views of the under carriage, but if the trucks are 3 axle, it is definitely an E unit. Both E & F units were used in by-level commuter trains mostly before the consolidation of suburban services into METRA in the Chicago area. Smooth side coaches were used by pre-METRA CNW& I think RI. Fluted stainless steel were MILW or BN. After METRA, the equipment gradually became intermingled in the various suburban lines.

    • @gravelydon7072

The old steam engines DID have steel tires. They were forged to slightly smaller dia. than the driver center (spokes and counterweight area), then heated to expand and fit on the driver , then allowed to cool and shrink onto the center. They did this because the flange was usually the most damaged part of the wheel, and could be repaired without having to forge an entire driving wheel. B it you are correct in this case, he should have called it a wheel.

@@railrol82 It doesn't seem dangerous. It's in the state of California in San Diego County. Check out some CZcams Videos on Goat Canyon Trestle. The whole line is abandoned. It has a few abandoned passenger train cars, 9 tunnels, and a long and tall trestle/bridge where the train used to cross. There's a video "The Impossible Railroad Update - Carriso Gorge" that they will reuse that abandoned train line again for the trains to transport goods from Mexico to the states.

@@railrol82 Your friend Millennium Force actually did his own take on them back in 2017. It's not a protected area at all it seems. It's just in the open desert about a mile from the interstate. There is a train tunnel near by them too.
The rail line was last used by trains back in 2008. It's still all intact and hasn't been torn up yet as far as I know.
The rail line that their on was a part of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway.
The line is also home to the world's largest all wooden railroad Trestle Bridge.
      See bridge picture: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/42/Goat_Canyon.jpg
The name of the bridge by the way, is called goat Canyon Trestle and uses all wood and no metal since the desert heat could cause metal fatigue. The bridge was completed due to the fact that a previous railroad tunnel had collapsed back in the 1930's.
And the rail line was completed back in 1919.
Note: This is a railroad line that you should explore with someone tagging along with you. Being out in the open desert there can be some dangers of course. Plus if something does happen to you out there god forbid, no one will know since you're out the middle of nowhere.
Most definitely bring a friend along for safety since this is a dangerous desert.
The bridge is 5 miles up the railroad line from the abandoned Metra cars as the crow flies.
This rail line goes through many tunnels and rides along on the edge of Cliffs of mountains throughout the desert. It did have passenger service back in the 1950s though. A tunnel near the bridge just recently collapsed back in 2017 obstructing the rail line. The line has been a very high maintenance line for railroads to use. However it never seems to be officially confirmed abandoned. The line is technically closed for indefinite repairs. But supposedly there is hope of reactivating the line at some point.
But due to the high maintenance of this line, it hasn't earned it the reputation of being called The Impossible Railroad. Even way back when it was originally completed.
And as for Chicago, yeah it's a goldmine for sure. There are just so many rail lines throughout the Chicago metro area. There is even electric passenger service in Chicago with the Metra electric and South Shore Interurban railroad Line that goes off into Indiana from Chicago.
The South Shore Line in fact, is the last operating Interurban line in the United States as far as I know. Unfortunately it's sister line the "North Shore Line" that connected Chicago to Milwaukee wasn't so lucky. Like every other Interurban railroad line in the United States, it was abandoned. The South Shore was the only one in the US to survive the automobile age.
Today the North shore line is nothing but a very long bike trail that parallels the former Chicago Northwestern tracks from Chicago to Milwaukee. (The North Western tracks are used by Metra and UP today.)

That locomotive is an EMD E unit (either E8 or E9) built I would say 1940s' - 1950s', not an F unit as you can see this locomotive has six axles. An F unit has four axles. It is a shame that there are youth that have no respect for historical pieces of equipment like these passenger cars and locomotive. Ah well when you are young (or old for that matter) and ignorant what do you expect.
