  • When most people think about retro gaming, they think about gaming at home. Mega Drive, GameBoy, Playstation, Atari. While many great games were released there, for those with quarters in their pocket there was magic to be found in the Arcades. Yes, while many of these games eventually got ported to home systems, it’s hard to capture that Arcade experience at home… unless you have your own Arcade cabinet. Enter The Arcade Guys and their Retro Plus custom arcade cabinet, powered by Raspberry Pi 4.

Total novice here, I was wondering how hard or complicated switching to a pi5 that is preset up with games from a pi4 that came on this cabinate, is it as simple as a plug and play after configuration of controllers/stick/trackball?

  • @wadecovington

Your review video and the follow up video really helped me decide on Arcade Guys. I am VERY happy. Have had it for a couple weeks now and have a specific question for you since it is clear you really know these machines inside and out. It is about the joystick configuration. I understand that I can change them to 4 way. Playing Zelda or any 4 way configured game on the 8 way is frustrating. I ASSUMED that there would be an in-game setting that would allow me to change the default controller for that specific game. So, for Zelda, PacMan, etc....I could potentially change a setting to show the far left controller as the default (which I would have set for four way). But, Arcade Guys are telling me that I would need to manually switch the usb configuration to make that the primary every time I wanted to use that controller for a game. Seems kind of silly that I would need to pull the machine out each time during a play session to do that. I looked at the in-game controller settings, but it was pretty vague and intimidating.
Do you have any input on that? Thanks!

It's a little cramped still if you are using the normal player 1 & 2 controllers but have completed a several games like that. Even with a bigger person. Hey I ordered one about a year ago I don't play much maybe for to 5 times over the year I tried to turn it on for some guess last week and the monitor is telling me no HDMI signal the raspberry turns on an everything is connect I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is ?

It could be the port on the TV, so move the cable to a new port and try that. If not, try a different HDMI. It's also potentially an issue with the Pi, like the SD card died or it fried. Luckily all those options are relatively cheap. Hope you figure it out!

Yeah, I ordered a 2 player version yesterday. Makes more sense for the size of the arcade.

Hard pass I think recroommasters is a better route. Get your own computer to run the emulation, monitor and speakers. The ones that come with the arcade guys is very low budget

You want them to list all 17000? Basically anything 2D is included. And if it isn't you can add it yourself.

Or you can just get a atgames legends ultimate

Smaller screen, only two player, much smaller community, ATGames quality is normally pretty bad, etc.

You saved me money! Easy pass for me. Seems very cheap and buggy . I'm using a xtension arcade powered by arcade one.

They have updated their systems a bit since this video, but yeah it's basically off the shelf parts so you can swap out parts over time if you want something else.
