- This isn't really a contest or full analysis, just observing and enjoying stand out parts throughout. I was really impressed with everyone here there a lot of tiny details in the dance so it was nice to see how they were interpreted.
This was really hard since so many of these women are dance powerhouses. They all bring their own unique style too which lets each of them excel in different segments. To me, it shows how different people dance especially when not trained together. Here’s what I noticed about each member (in a vague order of who I think did best personally). However, it may all depend on what someone personally thinks is most important to execute the move so I could see someone reaching a fairly different conclusion.
Boa
Overall, Boa serves a consistently strong performance. She rarely misses details and often adds in perfectly considered movements to enhance her moves. She has great control of both her upper and lower body. Sometimes she may run across an awkward angle or two but that’s it.
Karina
I was so shocked with Karina. It must be all the fresh promotion as a main dancer or something because she is so so clean. She fully extends and completes everything. I’d suggest following her to get the best understanding of most moves. She has great control over her body and a great understanding of the dynamics of the music. She often adds her own flair to moves that make things look better. However, sometimes it’s a bit too much and makes the move look worse or too strong for the moment.
Seulgi
Seulgi’s style of dance is very unique and I wasn’t sure what to expect with her for some moves but her musicality is really something else. She knows just what to add to each move and has really nice control of her body. Her strengths mostly lie in her wrist movements and positions (maybe from all that tutting practice) but she is pretty great all over. For example, in that “Step back” move I kept giving her, she had subtle shifts of her head, well timed wrist flicks, and unique but perfectly on beat footwork that just works with the music so well!
Hyoyeon
Clearly very capable especially when it comes down to the sharp and quick moves. There’s nothing Hyoyeon can’t do here. She shapes are very strong especially her arms. However, she frequently skills details, especially on her lower body. There are quite a few times when her footwork or even just standing position does not match the rest. If she were just more aware of these general details, it would be a lot cleaner and basically unstoppable.
Wendy
Wendy falls into a common category of dancers where, even if they don’t have the physical ability to pull off all the moves, they know how to still make it look good and strong. She has the basics down but sometimes hits weird angels, misses details, or gets off time.
Winter
It may just be circumstantial but it felt like Winter was holding back compared to what I know she can do. Perhaps she wasn’t feeling well. She missed quite a few details and was off time a little bit at times. Most of the time she was pretty solid and clean but moments where she could really excel, she did not.
Taeyeon
Taeyeon is very busy lately (literally a big solo album right next to this) so I have a feeling she was quite tired with this dance. She does things with good timing but rarely does she do the move as it is supposed to be done head to toe. In other words, she often misses some sort of detail on the way.
God, i know that it's normal for seulgi's arm lines and hand gestures to be insanely precise after training for the naughty choreo along with irene but it still surprises me how just. Precise she got.

Kinda glad Karina was in the group. Aespa’s choreo don’t make her skills shine tbh BUT HERE? Wow. I knew she was a good dancer from the start but she proved herself here and I’m glad people are noticing it too! She got a lot of hate for her main dancer position in Aespa, hopefully the haters will look at her differently now.
She's so discredited for her dancing. She's not even bad yet people are being over-dramatic when she's nervous and stiff like she's the worst dancer alive or smth💀

And as a fellow once, you should know another example of popular yet underrated idols: TWICE themselves are seen as less than capable of singing live however if you just check their concerts performance you would know that it's not really fair to say that from the start

karina seulgi and boa were def stand outs for me in this choreo. Even tho she wasn’t highlighted at that moment , I love karina’s way of executing the frat boy both arms move , she does it with a lot of swag. And I really like how seulgi and boa do the second part of the chorus where they like have their hands over their heads and they go back and forth. and also one last thing ( even tho again she wasn’t highlighted ) I think karina did such a great job on her center part In the bridge , she blew me away!
I always thought Karina was underappreciated when it comes to dancing, but to be honest even I didn’t expected her to be this good alongside other main dancers. Everyone was saying she’s nowhere near Seulgi or Hyoyeon in terms of potential. I am surprised and very proud of her.
It’s mostly due to the fact that Aespa’s choreos don’t let her shine and tend to be quite awkward

Loads of energy, she looks like she’s having fun which made the performance enjoyable for me!
Wendy is just energetic when dancing which is good, but in terms of fluidity, sharpness, power and etc. she's weak. Most of the time she overdance too and skip some movements.

Not exactly true, but go ahead and keep lying to yourself. Wendy is so much more than just energetic.
Wendy has improved her sharpness and fluidity and doesn't skip as many movements like a couple other members in her group.
She's also more fluid in her hip area than Seulgi along with Irene, who is the most flexible member. If you look at the dance break with BoA and Hyoyeon you'll see what I mean about Seulgi's hips.
In RBB choreography when they line up and rotate their hips right before the bridge Irene and Wendy execute that movement the best.
Wendy also does a lot of pops and locks in her movements and some people mistake that for stiffness. She even showcases that a couple of time in Step Back choreography.
You can see this locking on RBB when she and Seulgi go down to the floor on the bridge. She does that tut dance the best.
While you are criticizing Wendy there is room to criticize them all.
Wendy is third best dancer in Red Velvet and CAN execute some movements better than dance line.
She has the best stage presence and charisma along with Seulgi. She is energetic, but she's improved a lot and is more sharp and detailed in her dancing nowadays.
When next to Karina and Seulgi in this choreography she does not stick out like a sore thumb and is rather in sync with them and adds her own flair to the movements like the main dancers do.
Stop trying to shade her improvements. So many people are praising her improvements and stating she is one of the best performers in this unit. I'm super proud of her and Seulgi. I feel like they are two of the best performers in this unit and Seulgi of course one of the best dancers. Wendy is holding her own very well next to the powerhouse dancers in this group. Much better than Winter, who actually has a dance position.
Also, Wendy has a lot of power when she dances. Have you not seen her step back challenge with Winter? It is so obvious she has power. Look at her next to Karina and Seulgi when they are grouped together. Wendy is not lacking power at all.
Even at the start of Step Back she and Karina are hitting their movements with power.
Wendy did not overdance in this choreography because she stood next to some powerful dancers, which no offense to Irene, Joy, and Yeri, but they are inconsistent with energy and stage presence, so of course Wendy would look like she is overdancing.
Look at Wendy on the Way To Go performance with the 4th generation idols. Most of the comments are about her and her dancing is praised along with her energy and charisma. It isn't just about her vocals. I saw no one under that video accusing Wendy of overdancing because again she was standing next to Chaeryeoung, Yuna, Yoon, Sieun...
Now ask yourself how come there were no comments about her overdancing on that stage as well?

Irene is a better dancer than Wendy. Her technique is sharper, cleaner, and more fluid. Wendy still has some details she needs to work on, but you can see that she is doing exactly that. Wendy's stage presence and charisma stands out more, but Irene has her charms as well. A stare into the camera sends me in a frenzy 🤣🤣🤣
As for vocals I honestly wouldn't compare Wendy and Irene. It is unfair to compare Wendy's vocals to Irene. Irene has her strengths as a vocalist and I really love how she harmonizes with the vocal line.
As for rapping, I absolutely love Irene's rapping. She is a really good idol rapper and has a nice tone. She's so smooth with it.
I love Wendy's swagger and diction when she raps. She almost broke into a rap after Taeyeon's high note in Step Back. You can tell Wendy can spit fire!
I just felt it was unfair for the comment to say Wendy is only energetic when she was slaying right next to Seulgi and Karina and did not look awkward or out of place next to freaking BoA and Hyoyeon.
She deserves more credit than being labeled an energetic dancer. She can gold her own against the dance line. She has improved so much!

What do you think about Wendy's dancing? I don't really keep up with Red Velvet, but she seemed to have improved quite a lot (she was pretty much bashed for her 'bad' dancing) and didn't seem all to troubled to keep up with the rest.
I saw on a dance ranking vid that Wendy is actually the third best dancer in RV so I'd say it's not badxD that means she's after the main and lead dancer
I absolutely love Wendy's dancing. People sleep on her dancing so much. She's actually my favorite dancer in Red Velvet in spite of me ranking her third in dance. I just love the way she moves the best.
To me she's always been a great performer and a solid dancer! In this group she's near the bottom but I consider her third dancer in RV for example

I agree wholeheartedly! I've defended both Karina and Wendy on multiple occasions. People are convinced thru are weak dancers and they are soooo not weak dancers. They are much better than credited.
For me, BoA, Hyoyeon and Karina really stood out
- This is just my observation, I watch a lot of dance videos in generals to improve my own dancing skills in general. I tried dancing to step back (as a 6'2" tall male it's a bit harder than I expected, but I tried my best to do as best as I can.) Don't take thie seriously, its just an opinion and no bashing. Honestly all of them are in my bias line from their respective groups, so why should I bash them.
If something sounds bashful, tell me nicely. Please give me some opinions too.
BoA- just a queen, hands down. She is such an insane dancer and for her first group performance, she blended in very well.
Karina - Honestly, I feel bad for her. She often times gets shit on, because people have way too high expectations for main dancers. They saw how talented ITZYs dance line is and said Karina is a bad main dancer.
I honestly prefer her dancing over Yeji's and Aespas underwhelming choreographies don't do her justice.
Seulgi - same with Karina, Red Velvet's choreographies just aren't good enough for her to show off. I once saw a video of her dancing to Make a wish with Taeyong and oh my gosh, she was so phenomenal.
Comfortable clothes and 'boygroup-ish' types of dances and Seulgi is showing off.
Hyoyeon - Honestly, I feel like she holds back in this stages. We all know, what a beast Hyo is, but in Step Back performances, she kind of is underwhelming to me. Maybe she just holds back to not outshine everyone, she has some bad days, or she doesn't like this choreography.
Sti Hyo is at the top of the best dancers and just this one era shouldn't define her dancing abilities.
Wendy - Honestly Lead Dancer material. She has so much stage presence and her skills are so solid, I honestly love her. She improved so much and seems so happy to be back on stage. A true, passionate idol. Stan Wendy.
Winter - One moment she slays, the other she is underwhelming (both in dancing and stage presence). Her strength definetly are her vocals. She probably was very tired too, because of the Dreams Come True promotions at the same time. I love her dancing, but I was kind of underwhelmed during Step Back, because we all know she can do better, if she wants to.
I love her leg moves during the pre chrous with the "LevEeeLLLL!"
She does it so smoothly.
Taeyeon - Fun Fact" The first video I watched of SNSD was "Lil Touch". I honestly thought she was the main dancer and she actually is a solid dancer. Step back is just too hard of a choreo (especially pre chorus and chorus). She didn't stand out much and most of the time was the only one, who didn't execute most of the moves like the others did, but still she didn't stand out in a bad way. She managed to blend in and had good presence.

Wendy is my favorite since I really love her parts
I’ve noticed that Seulgi has impeccable angles when she dances so she’s really satisfying to watch, Hyoyeon has really good body control (as seen in the fact that her body rolls are so dang good) and Boa is amazing at extension and using her whole body cohesively when she dances (she’s amazing!). Karina also has really good musicality. Wendy also impressed during her parts!! Center Wendy is amazing! I like the way she does the trio part the most all the way through because I feel like she rides the beat the most whereas Winter may be more precise, but she does it more robotically

I've noticed that so many people on youtube make dance's analysis for step back, but Seulgi always got the most best executed move in those videos.
It's because Seulgi is very textbook style. She is super clean and has perfect control of her body locks but lacks flexibility and if quite stiff around the hips and torso. But her execution is just👌

I don't understand the Karina dance slander. I've always noticed she's such a good dancer and I'm not even a big Aespa fan. Imo the only time time where her dance ability is questionable is during pre-debut days when she danced with Kai and her solo debut teaser. After debut she ATE though🤷🏻♀️

Hyoyeons body rolls are crazy
The only person which astonishes me is Boa,cause I saw her for first time even after so many years her body in being perfect shape and moves crisp and sharp is a thing I can't help but appreciate so much.
Everyone else is either active in some way or are in active groups they are not the surprises for me but Boa is 😅
Will still mention Seulgi is my bias but many others at different time certainly made me distract from her.
Karina is a revelation, she needs some next choreo in her songs to blow us,always thought with Aespa why is she main dancer guess she answered with quite some intensity.😅

I thought it was strange winter not being at least in 4th position, she dances very well, but that doesn't mean anything either. As for Karina, it just proves that she really deserves the position of main dancer. (although underrated)

My girl Karina improved so much during this era. After all of the criticisms ( and probably some hate comments) she got before, seeing her shine even while being in the same frame as Seulgi and Hyoyeon makes me cry😭

For 00:56 her knees weren't bent as much and therefore not fully flipping/shifting, for 1:35 I could definitely see an argument for her there, for 1:55 she skipped the count where you're supposed to touch your hips so I didn't give it to her

0:55 the weight transfer between her foot are great but stiff af at torso. Also her hand placement is very akward i prefer hyo + head turn accurate to the beat.

Your points about Winter are definitely valid. Winter, Wendy, and Hyoyeon all do it quite differently so it may just depend what different viewers like/value.
Similiarly, I agree Boa's hands are not the best on that move but, when played slowly, I found her head movement to be sufficient and the accurate footwork was too much to ignore since it was notably better than the rest there.
@@soshimochi556 i think the footwork was never meant to be part of the choreo. It was BoA's artistic choice. Seeing from the original she was the only one who did that. Overall great analysis. 😸
@@tyrannosaurus6328 That's a good theory but I believe it is meant to be the way Boa does it. All of them do the first part the same (before the "whoo"). On the way back, the others are less defined while Boa stays on the counts. I believe most of them snub the last bend in of the knees in order to open again and swoop their right leg in. So only Boa "takes the risk" to do the full thing and make it on time which she successful does
@@tyrannosaurus6328 The footwork is supposed to be part of the choreo. They all tried to do it the first time here, but were unable to on the next. It’s not easy to do, but she risks it anyway. BoA doesn’t tend to cut anything out of original choreographies unless she’s singing for concerts. That’s one of the reasons why choreographers love working with her. She’s meticulous with details if you follow her and she will do multiple takes if she catches any back up dancer or herself not doing moves properly in her music videos.
