What is this thing?
This is the G63 4x4 squared and it’s the first time we’ve ever seen this
We’ve seen a G 4x4 squared in the past and it was arguably more insane
With more lift and bigger wheels
But it was never offered as the AMG
Now for 2023 this is the first time the G63 has gotten the 4x4 treatment
In fact from now on the AMG is the only flavor of 4x4 you can get
The AMG thing
So does the AMG stuff change for the 4x4?
Not really actually
Same 4.0TT V8 - hand built
Same 577 hp
620 lbft
And you still have drive modes all the way up to Sport +... lol
Still sounds amazing
Rated 12 mpg..lol
The interior
So the engine and transmission stay largely the same as a G63
And the interior stays largely the same in terms of design
In fact the only change in the 4x4 squared badge on the grab handle
The big changes
Almost all the changes are hardware and are on the exterior
The lift
This thing gets a massive lift from the factory
Sitting on portal axles for max clearance
Clearance now up to 13.8 inches
That’s 3 more inches than a Wrangler Rubicon
So it’s waayyyyy up there
Wheels and tires
The normal G wagon is already a legendary offroader
But all these changes make the 4x4 squared so much more serious
You still have Pirellis, but they’re more aggressive A/T tires
Interestingly though you have 22 in wheels
Most offroaders get 17 or 18 in wheels for max sidewall
And the last gen 4x4 got beadloack wheels
So still some AMG among all this offroad stuff
Roof rack
This is a $5000 option but it’s really unique
It’s a metal scaffolding with stamped steel on top to mount things
Oh, it’s also enshrouded with a front carbon fiber fairing
And that houses our marker lights
Yes you need them front and rear
And front LED bars
These legally have to be disconnected from factory in the US
I’m sure there’s an easy way to reconnect them yourself
But legally they have to be disconnected
Rear ladder
But the riif rack is so high up now it’s impossible to reach
Not with this hand dandy ladder
Textured steps
Rear bumper
And another legal requirement to sell the car
Since it’s been jacked up so high it needs this lower auxiliary bumper
And it’s textured as it’s the first step of the ladder
Willing to bet you can uninstall this bumper pretty easily
Tire carrier
Every G class has a rear tire mounted on the trunk
But this one doesnt get the tidy encasement
Cuz the tire is so big
It’s also been reinforced for the added weight
And has cool carbon fiber cover to it
Rear mirror
Since the rear tire is now SO BIG they added a digital rear view
If they didnt you couldnt see anything
First time they’ve done a digi rear view to my knowledge
Body kit
Carbon fiber wheel arches
Also MB branded Mud flaps
Have to be the most high brow mud flaps ever devised
Trail rated
On the door jamb it says shockl proved
Which is the Mercedes equivalent of Jeep’s trail rated badge
This actually isn’t unique to the 4x4, all G-s have this
Tech
This actually ahs some really old school tech now
Compared to things like the EQS
They came out with this thing in 2018
And it’s kinda not been modified much since then
They didnt even sell 2022 model years for some reason
2023 they’re back
Old tech system
Old scroll wheel
No touch screen
No lane keep
Etc.
Old AMG steering wheel
Still awesome though
Still has custom buttons on the wheel
Luxuries
Still has heated and cool seats
No sunroof…cuz why would you need it with the roof rack
Rear seats
Still good size
Heated
Chargers..unlike new GLC
Doors
Still gotta slam em
Still no keyless entry
Trunk
Door still swings out cuz wheel is so heavy
Even heavier now
Not super deep but since it’s a box it’s big
Price
Starts 350k
As tested 368k - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Special thanks to our Patreons for their support of the channel! Is the 4x4 Squared worth the premium?
OH MY GOD MATT: your channel and AMG have gone GOD TIER..!!
Pick me up and drive me around!!
RIGHT NOW!!
How did you get to review this..?
Is this going to a GB Packers player..?
@@gkstanfield just lucky I guess 🤷♂️ lol I think Jordan love needs a new ride 👀
Next, we’ll see you doing the Hillclimb @ Goodwood doing a review of a 250GTO..!
I’m proud of you..!! GET IT!!
One of the best off road vehicles in the world. Would love to see it with smaller rims and much more rubber on the tires though.
Just shared on FB globally; I wish you EVERY SUCCESS!!
Thanks Grant!
AMAZING!!
Keep bringing it Matt!!
That's a unicorn allright, thanks for reviewing it!
🙏
I bet those lights are wired it’s probably missing the fuse to make them work.
good video! thx sir
Awesome
😎
holy cow!
I’m assuming the 2024 Infotainment system on the standard G-Wagon is touch screen but I’m shocked that the 2022 G-Wagon 4x4 squared isn’t touch screen
This must be the silliest thing I've seen in a while, where can I get one?
there's also one that's convertible
I've seen white one 40 minutes ago. But, hey, I'm on the other side of the ocean, not that extremely rare, but rare.
Where are you?
@@dwnshftsomewhere the wealthy live. Definitely not where your depressing city is
Those are everywhere in southern California. There are 3 neighbors on my street that have them here in Newport Beach, CA. and every other person is driving one in Los Angeles because it's a tax write-off.
How come if only 500 we're built?
@@pablomalaga4676gotta be more because they claimed the 4x4 g550 only 300 were made but they are all over the road
@@pablomalaga4676 You can upgrade a G500 to look like these. So most of them are fake. The real 4x4 squared is over $350000. The fake ones are 1/3 the price.
Schockl is in Austria where G Wagon is built, Not Germany.
Who cares about fuel economy nothing else out there has the Cool factor like the 4X4 squared. 👍👍👍
❤
That engine should Not be kicked down OR taken higher than 4500 RPM for 1,500Km. (1,000 Miles) This IS THE FACTORY BREAKIN SPECIFIED BY AMG for all hand built engines, not to mention the differential gear set. The warning sticker is in the Top Left of the Windshield on every AMG. You obviously did not read it. It must be done that way. Why would a Dealership that is authorized to sell AMG's let that happen? "You" have an excuse, they don't. Assume they sell that vehicle to someone and something internal breaks. They will pull the car's "black box" and know that engine was abused while it was new. The window stickers are still on that car FFS. Nice review by the way. Just learn to read the warning stickers on new vehicles.
I just took delivery of an AMG GLS 63 that I bought for my girlfriend and didn’t read that sticker until I had a few days of running the car hard. The dealership never mentioned it to me and the car came with three windshield stickers one for your Lounge account setup, one for your Me account setup and the smallest font one mentions your break in period. I just assumed it was another account setup sticker until I finally read it.
🔝🔝🔝
the 4x4 squared is a wonderful vehicle - sad that Mercedes should add all the bling to sell that machine to Beverly Hills types who will use the machine to pick children from school. why can' they make a no-frills version, for use by serious off-road and overland enthusiasts? beats me.
hate that crap on top
Schöckl is a mountain in Graz (Austria), not in Germany. You pronounced it wrong. It's called Schöööckl not Schockl. The same thing with Öhlins. It isn't pronounced as Ohlins. It's ÖÖÖÖhlins. I don't say you've done it but everytime I hear Americans pronounce it like this. It's easy. It's not that hard. Try it. If German, Austrian etc. people know how to talk in English, you can do it. By the way, never ever rev a new car this high,... Especially a Mercedes. You gotta be careful with the engine as long as it doesn't reach 1000 kilometers,...
