3D Puffy Dot Paint Tests

  • I recently got OBSESSED with making sea urchin dotted stones. These required puffy, 3D, spiky, touchable dots. I wasn’t able to get the level of puff I was looking for with my regular paints, so I made it my mission to find the perfect application method and paint mix to achieve the lift my dots needed.
    I tested DIY cones, squeeze bottle applicators with interchangeable tips, and 2 brands of fabric paint. I also tested: ease of use, cost, paint brands, paint mediums, droopiness, spikiness, density, color control, & dot size and shape control. In other words, I fully nerded out in this video.
    If you also want to achieve some puffed up dots, watch this video and do your own testing! Please share your results in the comments below.

    >.. I have a suggestion for stirring your thinner paints and gel to thicken them for dotting. Instead of a stick to stir, drop a 3/8 inch chromed ball bearing into the paint before adding the gel. This will get past the opening in the bottle, and is heavy enough to stir the paint and gel. Once the bearing, paint and gel are in the bottle, cap it like you were going to store it, and shake it like mad. For me 30 seconds of vigorous shaking works just fine. Your hands may vary. [They come in other sizes, 3/16ths and 6mm are good for the more fluid paints, only.]
    >.. The balls do not block the bottle's tips, they are reusable, they can stay in the bottle to 'freshen the paint' between uses. They can be cleaned the way you clean a bottle, and since they are chrome coated, at least the ones I buy are, they clean easily and do not rust. And, they are cheap, 100 for about 8 bucks including shipping. These also work in the fluid and medium body paint bottles as well to keep the pigments stirred up. I would hesitate to use them in glass jars, like the Lumiere paints come in. You can buy just a few at an auto parts store, but in singles or small numbers are more expensive.

      Hi Lloyd! Such an amazing suggestion! I’m definitely trying this in the future. Especially for thinner paints with pigments that tend to settle. This is a perfect solution✨

    Thanks Rachel! Very informative and I'm glad you changed your result at the end. I am a home baker and yes, using the cones aren't intuitive and require practice. Once you get it down though, I think you can create the same or similar dots that you do with the bottles (I've done them with frosting). Its all about consistency and pressure. This video actually helped with paint consistency more so than anything else. And yes you engage the nerd in me! (-: Mission Viejo, California

    I bought the bottles and they’re amazing!! I did have some trouble cleaning the paint out of the tips even immediately after using them but I found that the tiny little dental brushes meant to floss teeth and around braces works wonderfully as a sort of bottle brush. It won’t go through the tiniest of tips but it works just to remove the paint that sticks to the sides to make it easier to wash out.

    I have a thought. I have an idea in my head so I have been looking around for ideas. Something I came across was using embossing powder with tulip paint. Tulip paints puff when you apply heat after they dry. This lady was using them to add texture to her card. What she did was add embossing powder to the wet paint so the puff wouldn’t smash. So you can just sit with the paint as you do. Add the embossing powder then puff them with heat. I think it would be an interesting experiment.

    I make transfers with puffy paint by designing on a plastic protector sheet. Once the transfer dries I peel it off and glue on another surface. Do you know if the heavy acrylic and pouring medium would peel off like the puffy paint?

      Spiky dots are made from heavy body acrylic. You can use bottles or cones to make those. 😊

    Hi! I have tried so many times now with different HB acrylics brands (Liquidtex, Amsterdam, Reeves etc) mixed with Liquitex Pouring medium, but the dots are still soft when they've dried. You mentioned in a comment (I think it was on FB) that the dots will get "hard as a rock". When I press on the dots, and put a nail into them, they get marks. What happens if you turn these stones upside down, will the dots stay in shape?

    • @TheDottingCenter
      @TheDottingCenter  Před 4 lety

      Lena Dufvenberg Hmm how long did you let them dry? Sometimes it takes a couple of days to dry fully because it’s such a thick application. All paints should dry fully. Maybe the paints you have behave with more of a plastic elastic feel where the indentations just bounce back? I’m glad you’re experimenting! I know you’ll find a magic mix. Keep me posted 😊

    I'm from Salt Lake City Utah. My name is Adam. I'm legally blind and I made a sign that has printing on it and I put a simple drawing on the bottom that looks like stick art for most of it. I laminated it but someone who is totally blind can't see it. I wanted to know what type of puffy paint would work on laminated surfaces the best but can be used in small spaces where the lettering would be?

      Hi Adam! If this is for a one time project I would suggest buying some Tulip Puff paint with a tip on the bottle. You can sometimes find them in the t-shirt decoration sections of art supply stores. I’m afraid the kit I sell may be more than what you’re looking for. All the best!
