You are correct. Depending on what direction the 3D object is being cut from, a different 2D object will appear.

You leave out some of the more interesting less uniform shapes. Like Passing a plane along the diagonal of a cube, you get a shape that evolves from a triangle to a hexagon back to a triangle.

Yeah all this talk about cross section thing is cool but how do you determine the shape of it with geometrical construction ? we're drawing in papers and you cant just expect that you would get cutting line pop up in the middle of the 3D object (especially if the cutting plane isn't parallel to the object base)
