Jack Nicklaus's Achievement(partial list)
In a span of 25 years, from 1962 (age 22) to 1986 (age 46), Nicklaus won 18 professional major championships.
The most any player has won in a career.
Nicklaus held sole possession of the lead after 54 holes of a major championship on eight occasions and won each in regulation.
Nicklaus won 10 of 12 major championships when having the lead outright or tied for the lead after 54 holes and won eight times when trailing after 54 holes.
Nicklaus had EIGHT final-day comebacks in majors.
In 18 professional major championship victories, Nicklaus shot 56 rounds at even par or below.
Nicklaus won two major championships in a season on five occasions (1963, 1966, 1972, 1975, and 1980).
An insane Nicklaus stat:
From the 1970 British Open through the 1978 British Open, he finished in the top 10 in 31 of 33 majors.
In the two in which he didn't, he tied for 11th and 13th.
At age 33 in 1973, Nicklaus broke Bobby Jones' record of 13 major championships (old configuration) and Walter Hagen's record of 11 professional major championships by winning his third PGA Championship; 14th and 12th win, respectively.
NOTE: Jack has lived with the record for 60+ years. A lifetime mark that will probably never be matched.
One of two players to achieve a "triple career slam" i.e. winning all four major championships three times in a career.
Nicklaus made 39 consecutive cuts in major championships starting at the 1969 Masters and ending by being cut at the 1978 PGA Championship.
In this span, he won eight times, was runner-up seven times, and had 33 top-10 finishes.
Nicklaus holds the record for most runner-up finishes in majors with 19.
Nicklaus holds the record of 37 first or second-place finishes at Majors. (Maybe even more amazing and more difficult a feat than 18 Majors)
Almost more amazing is that Nicklaus had 19...that's right...19 second place finishes in majors.
instead of screaming 'In the hole' as the players barely finish their swing you get a ripple of applause and a 'oh what a magnificent shot', how times have changed!

Didn't they have to hold up play a lot so they could reposition the cameras back then. They didn't have that many cameras back in the early 60's.

Wow! A par 74 course with four par 5's on the back nine, including par 5's at 15, 17, and 18. The equipment and conditioning of the course really determined what their stances and swings were like. Back then they really had to "pop" the balls on the green, and even the slightest of mishits with the long clubs sent the ball offline. This is also some actual rare footage of Jack missing crucial putts. I really enjoyed seeing this replay.

I thought it was going to be a real incident, like The Concession. There was nothing to this. Amazing playing by Player. Never saw a round when Jack drove it so poorly, though his swing sure looked smooth that day.

This sounds like the glorious Narrator Alistair Cooke. He had a vocal style that puts to shame nearly all of the latter day announcers. Only Peter Oosterhuis and the incomparable Peter Alliss can match that incredible delivery. As for the match, even the mighty "Golden Bear" occasionally choked on the Honey. Player whipped the snot out of him in this encounter. Jacks normally unerring driver even managed to find a parking lot on one hole!! This goes to show that nobody every truly mastered the game if golf. And no player ever will.
Would love to have been there. I was lucky to see Nicklaus play towards the end of his career, as well as other greats like Ballesteros, David Graham, Norman et. al.
I know what you mean. Arnie's Army member here. I started going to tournaments in the early 70s and have been consistently going to tournaments since. As long as I can walk I plan on continuing.
Player’s downswing is nothing but ferocious. That swing would top a lot of leaderboards today.

@@bobbys4327 That is due to equipment. In 2017, Boom Boom Fred Couples averaged 297 yds at age 57...he was hitting 275 yds in 1992 at age 32 and 269 at age 22.
@@bobbys4327 with space age clubs and balls. I saw Tiger reviewing a new version of the driver he uses and the club head was the size of a basketball. Has ruined the game, but the fans love the long ball. Golf avoided the steroid problem of baseball by changing the equipment, not the players.

I was once involved in a high stakes golf match. My opponent was much better than me and much more seasoned. I was in the lead until an unruly fan drove his car onto the golf course and struck me. The next few hole were disastrous as I lost my lead. Things were pretty close on the last hole and as I was putting a structure collapsed that the unruly fan had crashed into with his car. I was forced to play it as it lay but my former golf coach had trained me at a putt putt course before he tragically fell to his death out of my apartment window. I sunk the putt using the structure to my advantage. After this I went back to my mediocre hockey career.

I think Tiger played the best golf ever played in 2000, his consistency was amazing but majors are what we remember and Jacks got 18 wins and 19 2nds, thats career consistency.
Jack had ~twice as many opportunities. Give Tiger the same number of chances and he tops 25 wins.

Michael Kennedy I don’t Jack could do the shots that tiger could because of the ball was a a lot shorter in distance the clubs and shafts were not as good these guys never ad the use of gyms Physios fitness instructors even there shoes were like clogs tiger would of been great in that era but you cant compare them and there were more legends in jacks time just look at the majors won by Watson player Palmer and he won the masters at 47

Byron Nelson won 11 tournaments in a row. That will never be equaled nor will Jack’s 18 majors. Bobby Jones is the only golfer to have won a true grand slam in one calendar year. Several, including Hogan, Player, Nicklaus, and Tiger have won career slams. We cannot forget Seve and Sir Nick, two of the greatest European players of all time.
What struck me was the behavior of the gallery compared to galleries of today. I just watched Tiger Woods win on Sunday. His gallery acted like ill mannered slobs by yelling and hollering the whole time.
I thought Gary just walked like an old man because he was one... but he walked that way when he was young too

At my first tourney on LI New York, I was on the ropes around the green on a par 3. Player went over the green by 9 feet. As he walked by me I said "put it in the hole Gary" (being a big fan). The little piece of sh@# stopped and berated me in front of the whole crowd! So I told him to GO TO HELL!! He double bogeyed the whole and asked security to have me removed. The best part is when i pulled out my badge!!

I graduated high school in 1966 and immediately got a job fighting forest fires. Golf was the last thing I worried about. It's nice to be able to see what I missed.
In those days, and even during the 70s, there was very little golf coverage on TV and the World Match-Play Championship at Wentworth had the status of almost being the 5th Major, at least from the British media's viewpoint. Today, they can have four or five world championships in a season but none of them have the allure of the original World Match-Play Championship.

Met them both when I worked security at the Canadian Open. Gary was a great guy joking with security and the crowd. Nicholas was so bad by the last day he was walking from hole to hole on his own and security had had enough abuse. He was a jerk.

doesnt' look like the golf courses were near as tight and perfectly groomed as they are today. And where are our great golfers today with such great courses? Those guys back in Arnie's day were better golfers on harder courses than today. O well - still a great sport to play.

@Golfing Guy You can argue that it is not just the equipment. Better training and awareness of health, working out diet. Modern techniques and coaching with computer aids. But something certainly has made a difference in just the last 25 years. From PGA.com

In 1997, John Daly became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to average more than 300 yards per drive. That year, he was more than 30 yards longer than the average Tour player.
Now, 21 years later, the entire PGA Tour averages 295.3 yards off the tee - the longest average ever. By the way that stat has been increasing over the past five years, don’t be surprised to see the Tour’s average break the 300 mark by 2024.

We've gone from dropping a ball blindly over your shoulder, to dropping it in front of you shoulder high, to dropping it knee high where you can practically place the ball.
Remember, Player won this match 6 & 4. I'm a huge Nicklaus fan, but this one was pretty much wrapped up anyway.
Jack had better competition than Tiger Woods.

Woods best years probably came when the greats of the 80s and 90s were past their best and the superstars of the last 10 years were still to reach the top. and only Phil (second place) Mickleson was his main rival. having said that Woods won plenty majors by a distance
Two great swings...both men with extremely straight left arms extended, creating huge arcs.. definitely created huge width in the swing for long long long distance....and most of all, accuracy. Left side controls the swing..demonstrated by super straight left arms / shoulders.

Retrospectively, if Nicklaus' gripe was with the officious official and whether the obstacle was in his line of sight or not, and by choosing a wedge to avoid it, thus effectively ENSURING that he would concede the hole, perhaps he could have tried another approach. Namely, a longer appropriate club, DELIBERATELY drilled at the obstacle and hitting it. THEN, I assume this would have proven his assertion that the obstacle was INDEED in his line, and he should have been granted a drop, and the stroke replayed. Thus giving him his "rightful" opportunity to win or halve the hole.
i'd love to see the golf pros today playing with the golf clubs of the sixties!

I love Jack way over tiger because Tiger is a cheat and crummy human being, but the best in the world could be Mr. Gary Player. 86 years old nd still can play and had to travel millions of miles to play all over the world. It can easily be a 24 hour flight back in those days and Gary did it for years and years, never really having a true home court advantage like the prima donnas in the U.S. that play in their own back yard all their lives. Gary should get so much more credit than perhaps he does even though he's loved all over the world.
Always something see and enjoy with both these -- although a non contest. Nicklaus never beat himself up and took advise from those he trusted. Why he lasted so long. The longest career in sport really.
Wish they’d do more match play on the tour these days. So boring just watching them smash around the courses these days. Much better when there’s jeopardy on every hole.

I haven't been so surprised by the end of a video since the series finale of The Sopranos. I kept waiting for the controversy. Jack didn't like the ruling on one hole in a match he lost by six holes? Somebody explain why this is famous. The only thing that stood out to me was Jack's poor sportsmanship in whining about the ruling so much that the referee quit to make him shut up.

Tiger had the best coach Butch Harmon (remember his opp, kid from Fl, his girl friend caddying both eating hotdogs at US jr am while Tiger was instructed by Butch. Tiger was also ground floor of new tech, drivers , balls etc. Jack played alot with Mcgregor and H irwin said I couldn't find a round and amazed at Jack being able to hit fairways with them. Nobody has mentioned Tiger being tagged with steriod use, look at pics in diff eras. Jack the Best.
