Columbia is the capital and second-largest city of the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population estimate of 131,674 as of 2019.[5] The city serves as the county seat of Richland County, and a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 767,598 as of the 2010 United States Census, growing to 832,666 by July 1, 2018, according to 2018 U.S. Census estimates. This makes it the 70th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the nation, as estimated by the United States Census Bureau as of July 1, 2018. The name Columbia is a poetic term used for the United States, derived from the name of Christopher Columbus, who explored for the Spanish Crown. Columbia is often abbreviated as Cola, leading to its nickname as "Soda City."
The city is located about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of South Carolina, and is the primary city of the Midlands region of the state. It lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and the Broad River, which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. As the state capital, Columbia is the site of the South Carolina State House, the center of government for the state. In 1860, the South Carolina Secession Convention took place here; delegates voted for secession, making this the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War. The first six states to secede were those whose planters held the most enslaved African Americans; these were slave societies.
Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship university and the largest in the state. The area has benefited from Congressional support for Southern military installations. Columbia is the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. Twenty miles to the east of the city is McEntire Joint National Guard Base, which is operated by the U.S. Air Force and is used as a training base for the 169th Fighter Wing of the South Carolina Air National Guard.

At 4:48, you pass the Meridian Building on your left. That's where my husband's office is. How cool is this?!? We moved to the Midlands from Connecticut 2 years ago and have never looked back. ❤️

Born and raised in Columbia, SC. I use to be proud of Columbia, SC but now I can't stand this place. It is full of people from NY, New Jersey, Chicago, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, Georgia.... Especially Georgia

Grow up. People need to migrate there because the culture lacks BIG time. Look at downtown. Its small and there's nothing worth doing there.

@@ReallyAsmr I agree the more mix of people in Columbia the better. Every great city has an influx of people from "outside" that adds to the flavor and culture. Although, downtown Columbia certainly isn't small. Especially when you compare it to it's South Carolina peer cities. Columbia is actually too spread out. There's plenty to do and see there; it's no Chicago or even Atlanta but you can find anything to do whether it be outdoorsy, breweries, sports events, the zoo, bike share and even a marionette theatre. Not to mention there's the Koger center of Arts and one of the top rated art museums in the southeast. Seasonal festivals and Saturday on main. Need I go on? Lol

@@nsmitty8055 Other SC cities aren't even worth discussing. I'm referring to the larger cities the original comment was talking about. Coming from Philadelphia downtown cola really is small and lacks largely. There would be no point in comparing it to Sumter or something. Those options are great for someone but for me personally-none of those interested me. A trip to the zoo is cool once or twice. But there's nothing new and riding a bike around main street is uneventful. The tallest buildings have like 10 stories and there are maybe 3 of them. So yea, maybe you do need to go on. 😂

@@ReallyAsmr Well, what interests you? Also, we are talking about the same Columbia, SC, right? Haha Because I assure you, there are many buildings over 10 stories. Over 30. Plus, they just started construction on a 17 story building on Main street next to the library. Anyway, please tell me, what interests you? Do you enjoy restaurants? Exercise? Festivals?

These videos would be much more interesting to me if you people would give a description of some of the buildings in your tour. For instance I's like to know the name of the hospital. The police station. The sheriff's office. The malls. Anywhere near Fort Jackson. The universities. And give a direction of which way you're driving. And last when did Burger King come in? When I went down there back in 2003 Burger King wasn't allowed in Columbia SC. I would have found a tour of the neighborhoods interesting. There are so many times you can drive past a Well Fargo bank building. OK. It's Wells Fargo.
