- How difficult is it to learn a frontroll? It’s one of the most common kiteboarding tricks, but learning how to do a frontroll can be tricky - with lots of bails involved. Our group of kite friends spent a sunny session in Hatteras attempting to learn frontrolls - check out the video to see how we did…

You guys look like such a fun crowd wish you were closer. Thanks for sharing. I feel like I've kind of plateaued and I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and start trying new things. Just gets a little scarier when you're all by yourself.
You know where to find us if you ever happen to be nearby! We know what you mean though - even though we kite with a good crew, it's easy to plateau and not push, but after this session I'm really looking forward to getting frontrolls down and learning more this summer :)
Looks like everyone was having a great time. This is what it’s all about! Good job guys.... with another entertaining video!!! 👍👍😁
Thanks Ted! It was a fun day :D glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video to show fails like we all experience on the way to learning new tricks. I am experiencing the same crashes on my journey to learn front roll. Thank you for sharing real world learning experiences. Super fun group!
What a great kite gang!
You all seem to have the right amount of fun: *too much!!!*
Such a fun video!
That first bail I had was massive. My butt was hurting for 3 days after, and after seeing the footage, I can see why!
Great job :-)
Thanks! That was an epic wipeout! :D
Thank you for the fun and the Technic Tip of the Pro! More videos please! Good wind to all.
Thanks! We’re working on more videos :)
Great video! Super fun to watch and i'll be remembering those two tips from Sam the next time I go for another frontroll. *** EPIC!!!
James, what we were doing looked nothing like what Sam was doing. Is that even the same trick? X-D
If only Sam had dropped by a couple hours earlier!
Funny and entertaining video. Looks like a funny Session.
That is what t's all about 🤙
Thanks! It was a blast to film 😄 glad you had a laugh!
So much fun! Would have loved to join that session 🤙🏼🏄🏽♂️😎
Thanks for that nice video!👍🏼
You're always welcome to join :) Thanks!
Thanks for the video, the way that you showed the attempts made my think to learn in a funniest position over a frustrating one. Love the channel 🔥
Thanks!
I love watching your videos, this is one of the best and I'm not even a kiter! ( I am a windsurfer though) great storytelling, editing, and music! Thankyou!
Thanks so much! It’s one of our favourites too! 🙂
Falling a lot while learning new tricks sucks so much energy out of you! Good job staying committed, it's worth it. Front rolls are my go to rotation when getting big air.
Yeah - there were a lot of tired and sore kiters in the house after that session :) it was a great day though, and with the tips we received in the comments, I'm happy to say my frontrolls are coming along much better now!
It’s great to watch recreational kiters partying on the water. That’s what water sports are all about IMHO 👏👏👏👍😎
Thanks! We agree - it’s all about having fun with friends 😁🤙
Best kite video of the year for me.
Love to see I'm not the only one watching great tutorials and then miserably failing for hours... if not sessions! :)
But, once you get the trick, what a pleasure! And it's learnt forever, just like biking.
Thanks for this AWESOME and INSPIRING video, you really rock guys!!!
Thanks so much! :) couldn’t agree more with you - once you get the trick, it’s such an awesome feeling. One of the many reasons why this sport is so addictive!
Fun vid to watch. Really kewl that u got a group of friends to learn with, sure it will lead to success much quicker.
When I was learning I would go out with a mission to succeed but when the time came, I chickened out.
Thanks! And agreed - it helps to have friends to learn with, it helps everyone push :)
Awesome video! Something different then al the other video's. Keep UP the good work 💪👍
Thank you! :)
Loved this video, front roll fails are not fun. This is your best video
Thanks so much! Ya, the bails are painful, but it makes landing it all that much better 😄
Great video
More "noobs learn" videos, make it a series.
I aplaud every one taking part showing 100% percistance and good progress, all in the face of gnarley crashes. Seems like a great sesh
I hope i get good enouth to try the front roll some day
Thanks :) we loved making this video but it's a bit like herding cats to pull it off. Hopefully we can film another one next time we go to Hatteras with the crew.
You got a new subscriber, this is what kitesurfing is all about. Can`t tell you what a great video this is. Keep up the great work.
Thank you :)
You have an amazing kiting crew!! Great video!
Thanks!
great video! great topic and footage. I learned to kite on a surfboard and only have a handful of days on the twinny. I tried a backroll this winter and tomahawked the kite, the repair bill on the kite was $280. I bit scared to try this again aswell as the front roll. The good news is that I now work at the kite repair shop so I can fix the kite myself.
Your group looks fun.
Thanks! It was a lot of fun to make! Sorry to hear about the backroll incident with your kite, but sounds like you're all set to try again now :)
When learning tip
1. Front all the way to the front.
2. Back hand to the centre, or better yet take it off.
3. No more tomahawk
My instinct was always to pull on back hand, mega pain that's why try no back hand, even if you wipe out ar leasts
It's not so bad
The tips Sam gave are perfect. I find that making the spin just the slightest bit inverted like Sam does, gives you a lot of control for the roll and helps you stop rotating when you want for the landing.
Thanks for the tip! We'll try it out :)
Great video! Love these kind of videos, people having fun.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
awesome vid, awesome crew, so reassuring to see we alllllll stack and stack and stack and stack :)
Thanks! Haha yep - the truth is that it all comes down to practice :)
pretty fun and interesting to watch as an instructor. good job guys !!! I wish I could have taken care of your group that day with a few more tips ;)
Thanks! We tried our best, but I’m sure we would’ve had much better results with you as our instructor 😀
Since last week the front roll is my new 'signature move' :-) Great tip of Lewis Crathern: it's all about commitment. My tip: it's all about the last 15cm of your board = the push-off. Great video! We've all been there :-)))
Thanks so much, and thanks for the tip! Totally agree with Lewis - commitment is key for sure. Visualizing yourself completing the trick is also helpful too.
Yeeesss! I LOVED this video. So relatable! I learnt by doing it as a transition first, then if anything happens the kites at 12 and you can just plop down! Haha. I'm sure you've nailed it by now though! Such a fun video :)
Thanks so much Megan! That's a great tip, will give it a shot next session! :)
Amazing group and the idea to learn a thing together like this is awesome! The pro tip was a relief as watching crashing and bailing you guys so hard was painful :D There is no need to go 3 meters high to learn this - unless you want to crash hard! Poor ripped kite :( I would suggest slower speed, and less aggressive steering for the first try, just keep the kite above, rotate it and than land- sink, and get going again! Once you good, will be easy to add the speed and the steering for landing! looking forward to the next one!
Thanks! Those are great tips! :)
I found that when I was learning the more basic tricks, it was easier for me to learn them by removing my back hand from the bar to eliminate the possibility of sending my kite the wrong way :) awesome vlogs by the way!
Thanks for tip! A lot of people are mentioning that here, so definitely going to give it a a try next time :) thanks!
...or put your back hand more in the center of the bar than the front hand
@@Foilverrückt when I was having this issue that didn't help because I would still reflexively pull on the back, I had to resort to the nuclear option I mentioned earlier
@@Foilverrückt good tip! This helped me a lot until I had the courage to remove my back hand.
Yep. The backhand is almost always the problem when learning front rolls. Get it off the bar
What a cool group of people to learn with
Yeah, our crew is pretty awesome!!
Awesome video, love it!
Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed it :D
Nice video 😀, crashes are the best! I think one tips that most of you may have missed, let go the back hand for the rotation. It will help a lot in case you decide to do part 2 😉
Haha thanks, glad you enjoyed! Yes - that tip has come up a few times in the comments... cuz it works!! Saw a huge improvement in my front rolls when taking the back hand off, so thank you! :)
Weird, nobody told you guys to release your back hand when landing ,basic tip but it can help. Cheers, really fun video
Yeah, we didn't run across that tip in the videos we watched, but one of us (not me, lol) figured it out while practicing. Looking forward to giving it a try next time!
You did it again:) Sweet video
Thanks Kris!
I miss and love these old videos😊
Nice job! You did it!
Thanks! Now I just have to work on perfecting it :D
Stand on the ground, jump and rotate 360 degrees in the air and land same way with a kite you kick back aggressively with your shoulder. Keep the kite in front before 12h00 so it doesn't end up behind you :)
Great tip - will definitely be giving this a try!
haha great! video made me laugh! looks like it was fun!!
Thanks! It was a great day :)
I love the music.
Thanks, we hoped you would like it!
Good job guys!!
Thanks Paul!
As landkiter, I was learning front/back rolls on land.
Even thought that land is much more solid than water, I also did it with try-bail-repeat approach. 😅
I just had to be more careful with jump height, but I managed to learn it and didn't even hurt myself. 😁
I'm still wondering how different it will be on water. Hopefully I'll get to try it this year. 😁
Let us know how it goes! I'd be so much more nervous attempting on land! I imagine it will be a piece of cake for you on water :)
really fun video!
Thanks! It was a lot of fun for us to film
You guys need to take advantage of Hatteras downwinders. It’s silly to go to Hatteras and not do downwinders. Awesome in the sound and even better in the ocean. Looking forward to seeing it the next time!
Hey Benjamin, we have done downwinders in Hatteras numerous times - we have been going to Hatteras for many years :)
Our Kite Life 👍
cool video, next time I'll get some popcorn. If I learn a new trick, I prefer to put on an impact vest, maybe you should do the same, especially with rotations, otherwise it could be painful🤘🏼🤙🏼
Thanks! Yes - an impact vest would have helped :) at home we usually wear a PFD
This is awesome!
Thanks Blake, we are big fans of your tutorials on Mac, if ever in Toronto come join us to teach us kite loops , heheh :)
I have recently learned how to do a back 360 on on accident never had the guts to do on myself, I tried to do a big jump with back spin but ended up not going so high and doing a 360 without landing it more practice and I finally got it.
Nice! The first few attempts of any new trick are always nerve wracking...but actually landing it is always such a great feeling 😊
Very fun video, keep it up
Will do, thanks! :)
Haha this is so awesome!
Thanks! :D
Could you do one on backrolls.....just can’t seem to go for it
Nice kite life!
Pro tip Kitesurfe college🤘😎👍
Looks like you had fun though 🤟🙃👍
Yes, that’s a great channel :)
Think you where all going in to hot before starting your roles, keep the kite at 12 o'clock as you forward role 🤟🙃👍
Watch there forward role video 🤘😎👍
I'm not a Kite Surfer but that looks like Hatteras Island you are on, correct?
Been there about 20 times and love the place
You’re correct :) this is sound side Salvo
@@OurKiteLife rented many times around Salvo, Waves and Rodanthe, once in Avon too.
Loved watching the Kite Surfers.
Hope to go back there soon and take my Sea Doo for some exploring
We hope to go back there again soon too!
When you start jumping and rotating, keep your kite around 12h00 - 11h00. Just before seeing where you're landing, move your kite to 14h00 or even lower depending on the wind strength. if you feel like you're coming down too fast, rotate your shoulders slightly and land downwind :) Tell me if it worked out !
Thanks for the tips! Will give it a try and let you know how it goes :)
So funny to watch
Thanks 😄
Where is this spot, looks fantastic!
Hatteras North Carolina USA
Can this magical floating grass carpet also fly?
Got to spring off the water straighter & start rotating immediately. The start pulling on the front hand to bring the kite forward & spot the landing. All of the failed attempts everyone is leaving the kite behind instead of bringing it forward.
Thanks for the insight :)
how are your front rolls these days? do you have a new vid of the progression?
My front rolls are much better now - you can probably spot them in more recent videos, sometimes even combined with a one foot board off :)
muy divertido el video :)
How about a front roll to the opposite side for a transition turn.
I've done them and they look cool.
Front roll transition? Haven’t tried them yet but we could do that for a future video :) thanks for the suggestion!
That bail with the rally looked painful!!
I’m sure it was 😄
super cool
Thanks!
Where ist that Spot? It really looks ideal. 👍😊
This is in Salvo on the sound side just north of the Real slick
Ok thank you Great stuff 👍
Holy crap look at all those kites in the back drop. Where is this?
Hatteras North Carolina, USA
great one looks like fun! (;
thank you! it was a lot of fun :D
Some of you pulled the left side of the bar but if you are riding in the right direction you have to pull the right side of the bar because if not, then the frontroll gets to easy out of control
Agreed! Since this session, I have found it much easier to do front rolls when I take my back hand entirely off the bar
Great
Do you offer beginner courses? How do I get in touch with you? Looking at the video, I'd love to try it😁
We don’t teach - we just kite for fun. There are quite a few kite schools in Outer Banks, North Carolina (where this video was filmed). It’s a great location for learning!
Hahaha, that's quite entertaining ... :)
Thanks, glad you had a laugh!
WHERE CAN I WATCH MORE OF THESE KIND OF VIDEOS
We would love to make more videos like these - but it really requires a particular spot. Also getting everyone to cooperate is like herding cats! 😄
@@OurKiteLife haha yeah I imagine it would I must have watched this whole video over 10 times
Are you guys in Rodanthe NC
not anymore :(
Dark slides next!
yes, with the kiteloops! That will hurt!
What’s the point of using a flysurfer if you know that you are gonna drop it a bunch of times?
what’s wrong with dropping it a bunch of times?
where is this spot
Salvo, North Carolina
Stretching is the key!!!
It certainly is!
Gotta warm up your back for all those wipeouts!
Strange guy with hat on water: „Yeah babaaaaay“
Person watching: „Watch out, Watch out another kite“
Classic
😂
OKL - putting the Canadian in Canadian Hole!
James 3:04 I love it
Best bail of the video?
Where is Your Spot? OR where is this Spot?
that spot is in Salvo, Outer Banks, in North Carolina
@@OurKiteLife Thank, it's looks nice in googlemaps .. good Video .. with "normal" people .. and after, you look what you can do better with video analysis 👍Supa .. 😁
the first thing you need to do to learn the frontroll is to put on the vest and helmet with closed ears =)
Best tip for frontrolls:
Don’t overthink, just jump and spin
Don’t overthink is a good tip for all tricks :)
@@OurKiteLife real
And it ist more cool to do an inverted frontroll without the help hof the kite...just like all wakeboarders do
Yeah - it does look very nice that way
dude on the left rocks teh exact same board shorts as me :@)
styling! 😎
I think the main mistake is when you start screaming Oh yeah Baby a little too soon 😂
whoopsie, my Kook warning system went off.
Haha that’s ok, ours did too 😄
@@OurKiteLife but still another great video
Thanks!
This trick is a mother. I land it by mistake usually.
Haha ya that’s how I felt that day too!
North kite endurance clearly not up to par with Flysurfer! Poor hot guy with weak North kite :(
yeah comparing 7 year old kites with new ones
The important moment is kite position during rotation and speed. All mistakes on the video with this 2 things..
Thanks, good insight into where we were going wrong!
😂
You didn’t get it the first few times because you didn’t put both of your hands in the middle of the bar
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it's easy you just kick off your back foot 😂
And push your front hand forward on the bar to initiate the downward turn.
We will keep this is mind for next time :D thanks!
@@OurKiteLife make sure with your spare hand (back) you do a board grap to look megga cool Lee 😘
Next time that's the plan!
5:22 who t f wears sunglasses, a surf cap, a hat and a helmet all together?!😂
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be on vacation and couldn’t come home with a tan 😄
When they say 'bail and repeat' and you kiteboard on land.
😂😂😂
czcams.com/video/82SFyrYRuFo/video.html UKs best land boarders. not me.
i like your video's but these people make kitesurfing look soo uncool!!! hahaa don't mean this in a offensive way but very odd looking group.
If you want sexy, watch brand videos. This is what real, “average” kiters look like :)
So bad... Change the sport
Watch the video again and again until you get it!
And comment each time 😉
