      Game dying in my opinion was just a matter of time. I know there were some people who liked it, but for me it was not a good game and I think many could say so as well.
      Its kinda like Hawkins map in DbD. When it existed a huge amount of community disliked it, but now that it's gone everyone recalls it that it was great map and all purely (I think) because of nostalgia.
      And the same thing will most likely happen with Friday the 13th.

    The lack of advertising and the fact it went into early access was what I feel put the nails in the coffin. Putting the game into early access would mean splitting the cost between keeping the game up along with developing and finishing the final product, along with they they began adding new content before the game was finished, for a studio as small as Hellbent with no publisher backing it, there's really isn't a surprise that the game became a money sink for them. One thing nobody talks about regarding VHS's failure is the name. Everybody calls it VHS, but it's called Video Horror Society - and when you type VHS in the Steam search bar, even now that it's changed, it just doesn't pop up. For the longest time it didn't even appear on the drop down list if you looked for "Video" (it does now) - some time ago I wanted to check how the game's doing (I've never played it personally) and couldn't for the love of me remember its full name, just "VHS", Video... something something. I do believe it matters as many people just didn't bother looking for the game outside of watching some streams if typing "VHS" on Steam gave them nothing. Just my opinion though. Great vid as always :)

    I played in the beta and was very active in the Discord-I think some of the people who seem to be "celebrating" were probably also in the Discord during the beta days...it was a disaster. Literally all criticism of the game was shot down, people would get absolutely dogpiled and gaslit to all hell, especially by the mods themselves. Multiple mods power tripped and banned people a bunch. The devs themselves weren't always fantastic in the server either and the whole thing with the keys goes a lot deeper than "they withheld them", it is genuinely one of the worst servers I'd ever been in and it ended with a ton of people losing respect for the devs entirely. If I wanted to define "toxic positivity" I'd just point over there. I saw a lot of people say they started to feel crazy for just suggesting if things continued in the same direction the game would fail, so seeing it die might cause a weird cathartic feeling. Also, the devs themselves talked in the server very early on about how they refused to buy any advertising for the game. They straight up admitted they had zero intentions of marketing it, they had a confidence streamers hyping it up on Twitch would be enough. Their main reasoning was "we don't want to market a game that isn't finished." they got MANY warnings from the community about this, and they didn't listen. I am sad to see VHS go, the concept was so unique, but honestly, it would take a lot for me to even glance at any future projects after this. the devs have tried to make the monster experience easier/less stressful, but I think people buried it without giving it a try when they did add those alleviating changes. Example the Danger Sense that would have a visual cue around your reticle whenever a teen with a charged weapon was with in 16m of your position. This mechanic did make the whole 'ambushed by a silent solo ninja' almost completely non-factor, but at the same time made the monster role a bit too easy. Anytime the Danger Sense sprung up I would know that I can back up a little and either bait some ammo usage or just wait for my defensive skill to be ready before proceeding. Monster was boring as it became a match of I would know when I would be in danger and I can prolong the game to get my safe hits and force the game to be 30 mins slowly baiting the use of their ammo reserves. I also was afflicted with a bug that the tech help couldn't solve that no matter what mic I used, the game would acknowledge its existence but not accept its usage so I only had the pings to work with on teens and every teen game there were maybe 1-2 out of every 10 players who would communicate

  • @JosephKintzeleIV
    @JosephKintzeleIV Před 10 měsíci +1

    I think balance was a massive issue in the game. I almost exclusively played monster and in most games you had to take it easy on the survivors because you can't just bully and tunnel someone in a game like that and expect people to have fun or want to continue playing. However, in a minority of the games I played, maybe ~10%, it was an extreme struggle to even down a single survivor as a 4 stack team of good players is extremely hard to deal with. The big issue with games nowadays is that people play them hyper competitively and no longer play games to have fun so a game has to be balanced around the minority player base that is hyper competitive and willing to exploit bugs or game design flaws to win. I enjoyed VHS, but playing the game to win was not the correct strategy if you wanted the game to survive, which I think the DBD community wanted it to fail to begin with.

    i'm so sad VHS is going down.... i never felt it would "kill" DBD i personally felt the differences were enough that they filled slightly different niche's. VHS was fast becoming my favorite A-sym and i especially enjoyed some of the nostalgic feel that reminded me of the first major asym before dbd... Evolve (another sad case that died before it could truly flourish). Despite my social anxiety i was enjoying VHS enough i was actually seriously considering becoming a content creator so i could maybe try for rewinder. there were multiple issues, i think they could have launched instead of EA and started advertising and still done OK. but in all honesty from my experience with the game, they should have Launched with Reggy, kept Anomaly in the back burner (they really dropped him before he was developed and balanced enough imo anyway) because after Reggy dropped the balance/playerbase issues were actually in a pretty good place. but i know there was probably alot more going on behind the scenes than i know. but that's my 2 cents so to speak.

I do feel it is sad because people worked on the game and there were others that really enjoyed it. To see anything end that provided jobs for people and bought joy to others is sad imo. But I do agree that there was a lack of marketing and upkeep.

    VHS had 2 major issues unfortunately. 1st was advertising as you said. Even the content creators basically didn't get paid to stream...which is normal and natural to a point but then you need to put in some effort as a company with drops, codes, or affiliates.
    2nd was content. They teased the new teen for months and months with false release windows.... the game was available for nearly 2 years but 1 teen and 2 monsters were added... that ain't a content amount that can survive modern gaming.
    Their cosmetic game was fire tho.

  • @brad1426
    @brad1426 Před rokem +1

    I want to see other asym games succeed, but it's worth mentioning that VHS kinda killed their own game.
    No advertising at all, I believe EA released on the literal day BEFORE the midchapter balance patch last year with ZERO advertisement if you weren't in the discord, and those things didn't get the game off on a great footing imo.
    That is, of course, on top of some of the gameplay issues. I want to be clear, I liked VHS, but some of the gameplay issues on the killer side (honestly some on survivor, some of the stalemates were incredibly boring) seemed to never be fixed, and the player count dwindling for months on end did not help. A couple of weeks ago I had this hair up my ass to check on the game, because I hadn't played it in so long. I expected maybe 600 people online. There were...67. This was like a Friday evening too. That's like the size of a college class lol.
    Ultimately tho, gameplay issues weren't the core problem. I felt like nobody knew this game existed, and the developers didn't do an amazing job of advertising their game.
    Maybe "killed their own game" is a bit mean of me to say, but it's akin to releasing your brand new MMO on the day a new WoW expansion comes out. Your launch will suffer.
    I think if VHS had been released during the recent dry spell in DBD, where a lot of people complained that the game was feeling stale, they might've had a better launch. That plus, some advertising.

I would get stomped game after game after game and I would get a kill as a monster once every 5 to 10 games. that's no way of enjoying a game, as fun as a game concept would be only ever getting destroyed in that game will eventually kill all the fun... rip vhs

On top of that, trying to load into matches took way too long because not enough people were playing. What are we supposed to do after the game closes? I took a break after some of the VHS creators got targeted by mean spirited people trying to dox them, and then extended the break after the playerbase declined even more. I was hoping they would get a resurgence, put out advertisements and get some new players into it. I don't care about the money spent, I care about the potential this game had being wasted.
