    I strongly believe Elvis would still be alive today had it not been for the Colonel's personal greed. The 1973 Hawaii special was Elvis's last great triumph, a challenge he exceeded. For the next 5 years, it was back to the same cities... the same stages...the same crowds. Elvis died of terminal apathy...he simply did not care any more.

Wow to the person that wrote that , you have your opinion and you're entitled to it. Colonel Parker was a fake the entire time. And Elvis did not know it. If he could have toured around the world , alone that would have made himv happy and he would still been alive just from that. But the dumbass colonel Parker couldn't go out of the states. Therefore he should have been fired.
      Elvis then should had fired that fat sob,and God ...y another manager. Because there were a lot of great managers in the seventies. Elvis already
      Was famous through the 50s and 60s. When he made his 68 come back. He arranged at himself along with someone else I can't remember the name. Colonel Parker wanted a Christmas show. Come on a Christmas show on your first appearance in 10 years. I laughed. Elvis did the right thing , Elvis 68 special comeback ,and he killed it. Right there and then he should have took on a new manager. Elvis would have still been alive fans would have been screaming etc.

    • @claxtonclawhammer9969
      @claxtonclawhammer9969 Před rokem +5

      Well, Marvin, I have been considering this logically and unemotionally over the past few days after seeing the new Elvis Presley movie. How many of us in the general public know the details of the business relationship that Elvis shared with Parker for so many years? Was Elvis so weak and timid that he allowed himself to be abused and used for years on end? He had no cojones to stand up for himself? I don't think so. That does not speak well of Elvis. Not any sort of "King."
      Let's suppose two men decide to start a business partnership to create a new business together. Like Hewlett and Packard. It is by nature a 50/50 partnership, where they share equally the expenses and rewards. They are equal partners in the arrangement. Not the typical agent/client relationship.
      The typical run of theatrical agents may charge only 10 or 15 percent of the celebrity's income as a fee for certain services like booking shows, doing publicity, arranging for travel, negotiating with producers, etc. But then they usually have an agency with a number of other clients.
      So the artist or talent may only pay ten or fifteen percent of his income, but he then he may only get ten to fifteen percent of the agent's time and attention, if that. Brian Epstein charged the Beatles 25 percent, but he represented a roster of other artists also from whom he collected money. The Beatles did not get his full time and attention. But even so, when he died, they did not last long managing themselves as a group did they? The band broke up soon after. So would the Beatles have broke as big as they did without Brian Epstein's unique knowledge and talents? Hard to say.
      So I think the Colonel Parker/Elvis Presley relationship was a unique and rare one in the entertainment world. Certainly not typical. I think when they formed their partnership they decided to go big and shoot for the moon, to make Presley the biggest thing in show business, a superstar, not a minor celebrity. Which they succeeded at, maybe way above their wildest dreams. But to achieve that they both agreed to give the project their full time and attention, to pull out all the stops and go for broke. Elvis Presley got Parker's full time and attention as his agent.
      But 50 percent of nothing is nothing. If Elvis had flopped, Parker would have been destitute probably, at least for a while.
      Anyway, that is the thoughts I have had about it. I have decided not to join the Col. Parker lynch mob. But I lived in Memphis for a number of years back in the 60's. I did not know Presley or Parker or have any connections with them. But I know the city and am interested in Memphis music, etc. Which is why I write all this, I suppose.

      Colonel Tom Parker's real name was Andreas Cornelis (Dries) van Kuijk. He was born in the Netherlands and illegally immigrated to the U.S. at age 20. He was wanted by Dutch authorities for suspicion of murder. He worked hard to lose his Dutch accent, and avoided most interviews for that very reason. This interview was done much later in his life and by that time he had nearly perfected his 'American' English. Like everything else about him, his American accent was fake. Google is your friend.

    I think Tom Hanks could have nailed the accent we hear in this clip if he wanted too. There was a good bit of artistic liberty taken throughout the movie, seems that's where Hanks went with it, a emphasis on the Dutch accent. During this interview there are moments where you can hear that Dutch accent, Hanks just used those moments for the entire script, maybe trying to portray him more for what he was rather than what he was trying to cover up

    There is a story about the colonel that goes like this. When he was a young man in Holland, where he hailed from, he was known as a bit of a flashy dresser as he used to get about town wearing a yellow raincoat, a bit of a trademark look. There was a young woman he was seeing who was last seen alive with a man that resembled the colonel and he was wearing a yellow raincoat. The Police went on a search for the Man in the yellow rain coat but didn't find him. . .On the same night this woman that was apparently murdered, the colonel went missing. He left his home in Holland, without telling friends or family, and somehow he made it to the USA, where he wound up working as a Carney. His friends and family never heard from him again till one night his sister saw him on TV. The story goes that the real reason the Colonel never left the USA or applied for citizenship or would never let Elvis travel, except for the stint in the army, was because he feared that Interpol would intercept him and interrogate him as to why he left Holland in such a hurry...I found this story on the internet when I was writing a paper on Elvis Presley, if you search Colonel Tom Parker Its out there somewhere on the web.

      You are quite right except for one thing. I believe that Presley would NOT have had a number one HOT 100 hit with "I Will Always Love You". That would not have happened. It was a song so strongly identified with Dolly at that time, he would not have gotten away with it. He may have been able to have recorded so many other artists songs and have had many people fall all over him for doing so but not this one. Elvis' "Burning Love" was his last No. 1 and that was largely because it was a return of the Elvis of old that mainly recorded songs that were written for him and no one else. "I Will Always Love You" hardly qualified as that.

Instead of jumping at the chance, Parker turned it down cold, possibly because of his illigal alien status. Who knows, maybe if a Japan tour had worked out, that might have helped Elvis' career. All Elvis did was tour the United States. That must have gotten old after a while.

Elvis was too much of a nice guy and that may have been his downfall in the long run. Similar to Andy Gibb, another sensitive talent lost too soon. Elvis Presley and Andy Gibb are two classic examples of what happens when the business gets you and you don't get the business. My commentary is based on some publicity/promotion experience: In the beginning, Parker was ideal for Elvis. Innovative, shrewd, creative & relentless. Brian Epstein consulted Parker before bringing The Beatles to America to understand the security required. The old man was sharp. His deals for E in those early days were deals no artist was getting. A million dollars for an hour concert? In those days that was unheard of. The Hawaiian Concert was beamed by satellite worldwide to over a billion people & that was in the early 70's. No artist played to a billion people or even commanded that attention. BUT...the Colonel was selfish. Elvis was kept from big pay days & an even developing a bigger reputation. He was not exposed to the best songwriters. He was offered parts in True Grit (by John Wayne himself), Midnight Cowboy, A Star is Born (from Barbra Streisand herself). He was approached by artists like Frank Zappa, John Lennon & Paul McCartney to play and/or record with them. Nothing. He didn't even join his close friends on record late in his career: Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins. He supposedly was approached by Bobby Darin to sing with him in concert. In the early 70's a management conglomerate out of Chicago made offers to buy Elvis' contract & bring him to Atlantic Records. Nothing. Of course, we all know now why Elvis never performed in Europe/Australia. The Colonel was an illegal alien (oops...undocumented person) Offers to perform overseas -- all turned down. The only time Elvis stood up was during the '68 Comeback Special. The Colonel wanted all Christmas songs. Instead, producer Steve Binder helped fortify the argument that Elvis needed to perform before a live audience. The what-if's are too numerous to mention. In the later years -- 1967-8 -- the Colonel should have been showed the exit. But no one had the experience or the balls. Elvis should have had more allies in Hollywood / Nashville by the musicians / actors who were determined to GET him into their projects. It would have been all different. Elvis would have had a viable challenge again & his fame would have gone to another level. He probably would have recorded an all blues album with the finest black blues artists in the business.
    Not all the blame should be on Colonel Parker -- but, the blame does begin with him. Greed. Elvis was stifled -- live concerts became the same creative prison as his late stale formula movies. (which he himself called travelogues). He should have listened to more Leonard Cohen, John Prine, Tom Waits & Dylan. He should have avoided songs that charted for other artists. It seems he started to: I was flabbergasted when he did James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues" in the Hawaiian Concert. One of the best songs he ever did.

    • @keithglimmer4505

      Very doubtful that Aloha from Hawaii was seen by a billion people. That number was given by the con man Parker 4 months before the concert & everybody just keeps quoting the figure. It was available to a billion people so if every TV set was tuned to Aloha in every country where it was beamed (40 nations, I think) then 1 billion people tuned in. Not to take anything away from the event, it was a spectacular achievement & EP was probably the only single artist that could have done it.

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 Před 10 lety +10

      Keith Glimmer - Sorry for the long response, but you may find some of my commentary interesting at best: Your info was gleamed probably from published unsubstantiated tales from an Alan Hanson piece or Susan Doll book on the myths of Elvis. But, Elvis' own Marty Lacker addressed it diplomatically: "The day after the show we were sitting in the suite in the Hilton Hawaiian Village when the Colonel arrived with a Japanese newspaper that stated that 98% of the Japanese households that had TV watched the show. When Lagenestra (President of RCA) and the Colonel said,"Worldwide" they used that term to denote that it would be viewed in countries in the world other than the U.S., certainly there were places it wasn't seen, nothing has ever been shown in every single part of the world. As for the "First" in regards to an entertainment show via Satellite,it was in many ways and it was also the first show done on RCA/NBC's satellite. To try to minimize Elvis' historic outstanding performance 33 years later by someone who might not have even been born then or if he was might have not been aware enough to witness the true worldwide impact..."
      Suffice it to say, it was the largest audience in history by any artist especially for its time." - Marty Lacker
      Now Wikipedia (can we rely on that source? I doubt it) is inserting a fact that the "Guinness Book of World Records" reports that Michael Jackson's Super Bowl XXVII Halftime holds the record for the largest TV audience for a performance with 133.4 million viewers. Really?
      A captive Super Bowl FOOTBALL audience? Are we forgetting that the majority of the viewers -- 133.4 million -- were actually tuned into what? The Super Bowl? And that figure for 1993 is pretty paltry. These viewers didn't tune in exclusively to watch a Michael Jackson concert. Now, MJ did attract large audience in his day -- but to say that audience was HIS is quite inaccurate. Football fans tuning in at home don't turn their sets off because the Half Time show is on. When the "world" tuned into Elvis' Aloha from Hawaii there was no Super Bowl bonus audience tuned in. Those numbers tuned in to watch Elvis and Elvis alone despite the technology & in 1993 it was even being better than 1977. Many more families had televisions, as well as, bars and restaurants not to mention Pay Per View and reruns on HBO. As usual these bloggers/writers never compare apples to apples. It's let's try and de-mystify Elvis as much as possible. These are people who have no clue what the music business was like before Elvis in the 1950's because after Elvis it became an industry. No one asked Elvis to do a half-time show for the Super Bowl....because he wouldn't have done it, and he alone would have been too expensive even for them. Entertainers today need to do a venue like the Super Bowl to get that audience they probably wouldn't get otherwise. Look how many of your "super stars" today are failing, concerts cancelled, half-filled, poor shows. Two weeks ago the biggest act to take the stage in England at that big Glastonbury fest was Dolly Parton. Sends a message doesn't it? These bloggers/writers would probably answer me by saying "yes, the majority went to see her for her tits." But they'd be wrong.
      I do respect how you wrote your comment Keith -- it was civil and respectable. But the source of your information -- those two writers I mentioned who stated that Aloha figures were questionable -- are just not reliable sources. They substantiated nothing. Even if the figures were inaccurate, they would still be figures far larger than anything for a single entertainer. It was broadcast via satellite -- fact -- worldwide -- that's a fact -- they didn't do that for just anyone in 1977. In the real world, we know what Elvis achieved, how much he sold, how long his legacy has lasted and how much it influenced others. That's not myth. And that concert, if you see it today, was spectacular. I would've have liked to have seen him move it more, shake it more. But, he didn't want to offend any countries so he kept it low key. Even low key -- Elvis delivered. He didn't need smoke machines, laser beams, two hundred sexy half-naked female dancers behind him, or muscular back-up male dancers supporting him and huge helium balloons flying over the audience. He needed none of it. I don't see that today, except for maybe a Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Because they too....their concerts are about them, We go to see them. Not the extravaganza or needing a Super Bowl audience.
      Time for a beer......

      Forget '67 , Parker should've been dismissed already 1965 when the film scripts turned more and more bad.

      John LaStrada one simple fact most people miss.
      Elvis worshipped the ground Parker walked on, he was the single most important person in his life beyond his family.
      He wasn't in any legally binding contract with Parker as non of thier contracts were legal as Parker was not even supposed to be living in America.
      Elvis knew this and tried everything in his power to stop him from being deported
