I think the idea is… ok but yeah it’s boring. I think it’s meant to be a way to speed up one’s progression for new playthroughs (because some of the new playthrough grind is a bit of a slog) but it just fizzles cause those parts are not long and are later on in a playthrough *cough* sawtooth *cough*

I think it's okay but I feel like it could have been better I wish they made a free DLC for all the borderlands games including tiny Tina's assault on dragon keep stand-alone game and wonderland where it adds a new character that stands next to the golden chest and he can sell you golden keys for eridium (money if you're playing on borderlands 1) the more you buy from him the more expensive it gets but if you wait a while it'll die down or just save and quit, the character could be a mysterious character like the merchant from resident evil 4 or xul from destiny!

absolutely, the fact they're rarely released, alongside the fact that the loot you get is meh at best which in BL2 is often overshadowed by other weapons or just becomes useless after 3 levels. Theyre meant to be special but the loot just makes it not feel special at all, a single warrior kill gives better loot then 5 golden keys half the time just makes them feel so useless even for the most casual players.

If golden Key loot did something interesting, I might make it available in the pregame. So instead of your default loot you get a random item to tweak the early game, then you slot into the random number generator for the rest of the game.
And if you are having terrible loot drops, you can go back to the start to grab something random and new.
Ideally it should generate one item of each type, and you must choose just one item each round so you want a shotgun challenge? Go grab a new shotgun.

For me the main problem with golden keys is that they’re limited by time and they’re profile based not character based. If golden keys were like eridium and sometimes dropped from enemies it would be completely fine and I would use them. The problem is that they are a limited resource that you have across all of your characters so even though I have a couple hundred in bl2 I’ll never end up using them since once they’re gone they’re GONE. If you use eridium to get the wrong sdu upgrade in bl2 early game it’s fine since there will always be more eridium. If you use a golden key and get something useless for your character then it’s just a waste of a golden key. It would be like saying that you have a limited amount of bunker kills ie 100 and you have to wait for gearbox to release a code to get more opportunities to farm him.

@@elliotallison2570as joltz said, there are issues with this system. But I think being able to keep the keys to use on other characters is very useful. If the play through isn't going well, you can just grab 1 or 2 things. For example, it has been a great source of on-level snipers in my sniper only run until I get some good farms unlocked. I don't see how it's much different from farming tinder snowflake. I personally have no problem with it and I don't abuse the golden chest glitch, but if people don't like it then just ignore it or give the loot to your friends.

To me G Keys have 2 issues, the loot is bad, and they’re boring to obtain. An idea to fix them could be something like
Make them good and let us know the odds, e.g. 10% chance to get a legendary, 1% chance to get a pearl #bringbackpearls
2nd, make acquisition fun, how many side missions go unplayed bc they don’t give anything? A LOT! Have it so they can get keys from missions AND they could throw shift codes our way. I could also go into a rant about how removing mission reward uniques could help a future game but I’ll save that for a different paragraph. 😂

Considering most players want to keep their playthroughs limited to that playthrough (like disabling BAR in BL2, or not using secret stash/safe), The only way that I'd consider them a good feature is if they're able to be equally available in every playthrough separately. I propose that they drop from in-game sources (rare world drops or raid boss kills, etc.) as well as from codes, so it would fit every playstyle. They're not gone and exhausted forever, and challenge playthroughs can still use them if they're obtainable in that challenge.

The Chaos Chamber actually would be a really good way to give rewards, I think. Forcing people to make a build that actually does damage or can survive a long time so they can earn their loot instead of literally sitting and waiting for another real person to decide to tweet something. Especially since, like the diamond key chamber, you have more control over what you get. While the gold key is entirely random, the others let you pick from a kind of selection, with the Chaos chamber even letting you completely control what kind of gear it is.

Firstly get rid of the Codes but make the Golden Keys farmable like Seraph Crystals from the Raid Bosses, maybe 1-2 per Raid Boss Kill.
Now, the Golden Keys can still be used for the Chest BUT what if they introduce a True Raid Difficulty where you have to pay 10 Golden Keys instead of Eridium and you could get guaranteed Pearl or Effervescent if they bring it back in BL4.

The only times I've used them is when I'm playing with friends who don't play the game as much as me (so their tolerance for less interesting sidemissions or xp farming is lower), pushing our way through the story and everyone's gear feels a little underleveled - usually around the time you have to face The Bunker, due to the huge level jump in the story missions at that point. Getting a sudden burst of blues and purples feels super empowering, but I don't think I'd bother doing it when I'm playing on my own, especially not a high/max lvl character.

to take your challenges idea a little further while still keeping what makes Diamond Keys better than Golden Keys (the fact it's a guaranteed legendary drop) have 3 tiers of missions with 2 mission types each, mobbing and bossing, easy guarantees 1 legendary from mobbing or the dedicated drop of a World Boss (any named enemy that doesn't have a true boss health bar), medium guarantees 2 from mobbing or the dedicated drop and 1 random legendary from an actual normal boss, and hard is 3 legendaries from mobbing or 3 dedicated drops from a Raid Boss, it still leaves normal farming open as an option and your main form of farming but gives those that aren't quite at the point where farming for parts and prefix matters as much a fairly rare source of guaranteed legendaries in the form of fighting easier things. the way these missions would work is that while it is your active mission it could apply a modified Shlooter effect while within the mission bounds. It would also make the early loot charting much easier for those that make those lists since it's revealing the dedicated gear of that boss even if slowly

This has always been also problem for me. Like sure I don't need them, but it's great to sometimes be rewarded, especially more in the early game, where the purples are still usable.
And I completely agree with you and that's also really similar to how I wanted to solve the issue.
I basically wanted something like the weekly challenges in BL3 with Vault cards. Because you're not limited to just one type of content. If it was locked to a defeating certain boss you could get bored by it pretty quickly or at least I would be. But if the challenge was defeat 300 enemies with Dahl Assault rifle, you could still do basically whichever content you want. You would by just limited in the how you beat the content. Which sometimes can lead you in discovering a cool stuff. Like when I did my 1st Dahl only playthrough in Borderlands 2(I believe)I picked up and used The Hail for the 1st time and since then it's one of my favourite unique weapons in series.
So if the challenges were about how you play instead of what, I believe it could help both the newer players in trying something different with their build. And they would also be rewarded for it.

However, this engagement isn't for players like you Joltz, as we would just go farm BOSS-XYZ to get ITEM-XYZ. Golden Keys should have an End Game purpose to make them valuable again. They could also be used as an alternative payment; 500 Eridium or 1 Golden Keys for the anoint reroll or raid boss payment (if they keep those hefty prices from BL3)(Yes, Rerolls was made better in TTWL).
It's funny that you mention Chaos Chambers because when that was getting stale I suggested to GBX that they add different types of rooms. While I took small segments from the Guardian Takedown, I think your puzzle rooms could have also been a fun way to change up the Chaos Chambers.

There should be a daily challenge system in the next Borderlands where each day you can complete a challenge or group of challenges to gain access to a loot room. If you complete the daily challenges consistently through a week, your chance of rarer loot spawning increases each day. By the end of the week, you could have plenty of purple/legendary gear to choose from. I think 3-4 things for each visit would be adequate. Gives you a reason to keep doing the daily challenges every single day though 🤷‍♂️

When I first started playing it was a really fun system. I had a few rolls and i saved them for situations where I felt all my weapons no longer kept up with my level increase and needed something to kick start a new arsenal.
Later on learning that you can’t get legendaries definitely made it less exciting. And it’s definitely not a system that’s amazing for long term players but I do think it’s great for new players and when a game first launches

Somebody mentioned one mod that changed the golden keys to eridium, there's another, Snowbound, that replaces it with 5 crystals (i forgot the name but they're pink). I think the golden keys were good in 2012. Every big developer was doing something similar at the time, Golden Keys were really just the ones that held up (since they still do them). I've never been a fan of these code things in games as it just introduces an additional hurdle to unlocking good things, plus the FOMO from codes that expired.

That sounds like a lot of fun. You could get keys by a rare drop from bosses. Have different types of keys, such as shield keys, relics (or whatever they call it in bl4), shotgun key, etc and each boss will only drop that type of key. Like, if you were farming Captain Flint, he has a tiny chance to drop a Pistol key which can drop any type of pistol which can be unique to the chest or legendries/pearls.

I kinda love your idea for golden keys, maybe Randy should be taking notes because these are golden ideas! I'm just imagining a selection of things we could tackle, so we don't have to do this one or that one, but any challenge, and if we complete it, a guaranteed legendary, if we do very good, another or maybe 2 more, and if we can't complete for the life of us, some random purples and blues... That sounds legit.

The issue you raise about them being boring I think is true, but I think the central part of that issue is the loot itself, not even the lack of a challenge. We need a guaranteed or at least very high chance of a legendary/pearl/seraph/red text (maybe 1 in 3) for it to be worth it imo. When you have a 1 in 10 legendary drop chance from just farming a boss once, the chest by definition has to be at least as rewarding as a boss to feel like it’s “worth it.” With how common keys are given out though (and how easy it is to basically have infinite on PC), I think adding a challenge is a great way to make the chests more fun at the same time, to make it fair too. Obviously they won’t patch that into BL2 in its life cycle right now, so maybe making the drop chance just a little lower could work to compensate because it feels like we’re all sitting on a stockpile of keys-I know I am. The reason I think the drop chance should be high though is the keys will naturally become more scarce as people get used to their new value. And then people will have to decide whether to use it now, or whether to wait a few levels so it’s more powerful, or how many to save for the next playthrough.

I think the current golden key system definitely needs some changes. I agree it should be something the player can earn rather than just a redeem whenever gearbox decides to give us some. When I got back into bl2 i saved all my golden keys on my first character bc I didn't want to waste them on gear I'd outlevel. But by the time I was 72 I quickly realized I wouldn't be getting much gear that was competitive with what I already had. Nowadays I don't use them bc either I'm doing a challenge run where it is disallowed, or I don't really feel the need to use it to keep my player stocked up to take down the next challenge. But as a bl2 vet, I know that my experience isn't everyones and many players do need it as a convenient boost when they get stuck and don't have the gear they need to keep pushing forward.
So I'd suggest something along the lines of the following, they make the golden keys a rare drop from enemies so you can get them naturally through gameplay. They work similar to bl2 giving mostly purple gear. Then in tvhm/uvhm/whatever form of ng+ we end up with, they replace the golden key with the diamond key. It is rarer and maybe only comes from more limited loot sources. And when used on the chest it gives legendaries. But if it is anything like bl3, what is the point of another loot source stuffed with legendaries? Sure you could give a crapton of drops but bl3 already has looting fatigue issues and what we absolutely don't want is it to be a more ideal source of a specific item than the set source for that item. So how do you make it worthwhile without making it the best place to farm something? One option could be that in ng+ when using a diamond key, the items are all legendary and anointed. So even if it isn't the best source of a specific item or even the best source of world drops, it would be worth it bc the quality of world drops you get from it have a higher baseline, removes a layer from the rng. I think something like that could really improve its usefulness even without majorly overhauling it into an event or something.

I like the idea for the Golden keys, but keep the Diamond loot room for Diamond keys. As the chance for vault card Diamond keys are so low, that getting a Diamond key should be a true reward and getting to choose from 3 walls of loot is a great reward for grinding vault cards and getting a Diamond key to pop. As for Golden keys I think you should get them with each story boss kill. Then use them to unlock a boss rush challenge, you fight 3 challenging bosses and if you survive you get rewarded with loot and on hard difficulty you get guaranteed legendaries.

Initially listening to the ideas I was skeptical about how cheesy it seems, but I thought about the idea that keys could do the things suggested but in a way that adds content relevant to the franchise and keeps the engagement outside the game for advertising like gearbox wants. Example, an engagement of bandits ruining your time in a theater trying to watch the Borderlands movie. It can go many different directions of how to provide worthwhile incentive, but it's a unique content experience only attainable through engaging with a shift code and advertises a hell of a lot better in my opinion. I think it could definitely be a decent idea if it doesn't feel too corporate.

I wouldn’t mind if you could load a golden key in a takedown/raid boss as long as it doesn’t affect difficulty (i.e. locking difficulty behind the keys) but instead kept whatever difficulty is set and just increased loot drops from bosses/mini bosses. That way you can get loot you want from golden keys, you still have to be good enough to earn it, and they feel useful and have a place in the game that doesn’t make a hole in content when your out of them.
An example would be you load a golden key into Maliwan takedown and each boss drops 200%-500% more loot including dedicated drops.

I like golden keys and here is why: they are free LIMITED items which don't actually give out top tier loot so its not like it breaks the META, and in the case of BL2 anyway it seems to give out very unique purples that I hardly see as natural loot so I am usually pleasantly surprised. As for BL3 diamond keys I both like the idea and the actual presentation room, as well as that the keys are free, but I dont like that you can pop OP11 and go try for some OP legendary that'll carry you through (tbf tho its not hard to get OP gear in 3)

For the next 2 weeks I found myself just duping keys and posting up at the gold chest instead of farming and actually playing and by the time I got bored and went back to the action I realized I had nothing to really do, I got all my favorite gear and I'd be farming just for slightly better rolls.

my idea is make the chest a boss or part of a boss and let players put in any amount of keys they want. The more keys they use the harder the boss is but it will drop more and higher quality loot. you could use one key at a time for an easy fight for average loot or the max amount for essentially a raid boss fight. heck they could even make multiple different bosses and make it random which on you get each time. some ideas could be as simple as a mimic or a giant loot goliath or something like the chest opens and inside is a giant hole leading to a boss area for who knows what

The golden key system is cute. In any game there is end game farmable loot run. Knoxx, chaos bunnies, etc. So using keys at that stage doesn’t garner rewards to match. What that means is that keys are most useful when playing through the campaign, and maybe you e been using “grandpas gun” from 10 levels ago because it does all the things you want a gun to do for your hero, but you’re desperate for one on par with your current stage of the game.
Even if you do open 5 keys every 5 levels, I’d still be able to do that 4 times in some of the older games which I hoard keys but never play.

One system I thought of is instead of Golden Keys being tied to social media, they are instead tied to a leveling system of sorts where as you kill named enemies or bosses, your bar increases and once it fills completely you get a golden key. You can either cash it in, or hold on to it and get 3 of them to get the diamond key. This rewards players who grind and it kinda acts like a Gacha Game's "Pity" system so if you're really unlucky while you're trying to grind for your weapon of choice, you can cash in your keys and save yourself the trouble. Randy could then use the current system to offer boosters to increase the rate the bar fills up for a temporary amount of time.

Your reward will be determined by the path you take. Then next time you play it you can make different choices to see what the difference in loot is. That would be a fun way to spend some down time away from the shooting too.

The only time i ever feel like I even want the extra gear is in BL2 specifically when doing a playthrough with friends. BL2's drop rates are frankly so poor that you frequently don't get anything more exciting than an occasional blue when not going out of your way to farm. Getting cool drops is half the fun when playing with a group and it derails the play session for everyone to stop and farm on their own for something fun to use.
I'd rather get my stuff just by playing the game organically when possible, but the drop rates are a major pain point for keeping a group motivated to play. Nobody wants to go through the majority of the game using mostly whites and greens, and BL2's exponential level scaling means that guns rarely last more than a few levels.
When I've played with friends we'd stop in Sanctuary every 5 or so levels and pop the chest open a few times. Key codes and the entire SHIFT backend are super tedious to use, so I just use cheat engine to make it free. We open it a few times until everyone gets at least a gun or two that's fun, then we get back to actually playing and enjoying the game.
All that aside, I think the chest is largely unnecessary, especially in the other games. In BL2's case, if it had even just slightly more generous drop rates of blues and above we'd never bother with it.
I would vastly prefer if the Golden Chest was properly tied into gameplay somehow, such as by completing challenges. The main reason I don't bother with it is it never feels earned. I like what BL3 did with the in-game mail system rewards that gives you free stuff for kill milestones. BL3 has almost the opposite problem with drop rates that BL2 has, but I'd rather have an abundance of cool options rather than a drought of them.

There's now less and less people playing vanilla BL2 anymore. Most people who play will be on PC and have access to mods, mods that either repurpose the golden chest, make it easier to get better loot, or even just gibbed save editor. If you don't play on PC it's still possible to edit your saves on console through gibbed editor. It being a single player game where modding and cheating are allowed, there's no purpose for golden keys anymore. Plus you can even just edit your local save to give yourself a bunch of keys, along with bar and other stuff.

They could of just made it like a golden ticket system where you get unique quests from a quest board that exist serverside when playing online that grant unique rewards like maybe a skin or head, weapons with gimmicky parts, etc
What I personally would decide to do instead to reward players for being interested in the games social media is leave hints of hidden content put into the game, fill the game to the brim with hidden stuff that could be found years after release.
