I studied with Allen in '93, at MI. He was always a great musician and teacher. I was starting to get interested in improvisation and jazz but I was still very immature. I learned a lot watching Allen play and what he said to listen. The year I spent there was definitive for my training as a musician.

The visual adds another dimension in the communication. While I think this interview was extremely intimate and informative, how much more evocative could it have been to see the speakers actually emoting visually.

Really love your podcast sir. You are asking all the right questions with great finesse. I’ve been a fan of Allen’s for decades. Actually have many mutual friends and colleagues. Got a complement from him 30 years ago regarding my voice. I still think about it. Gave me hope. He is very much a positive force on this planet and I’ve learned that all the more listening to this podcast. Bravo to all at Everyone Loves Guitar.

I didnt have a good experience with this dude in 96 at mi but all the things he talkin about on here makes sense ,la is not a old people town i lived there for 20 years and moved and im living exactly at a place he describes

I studied with Allen at MIin 1989 what a wonderful player teacher and human, I also taught Austin John who you interviewed, he mentioned me but he said I went to berklee but it was MI lol , but love your show and all the interviews! Thank you

What an informative interview, glad I took time to listen to it all.
I had a few lessons with Allen at MI in 2006/2007 and a couple of big take aways were making each note sound good and hybrid picking.

OK, I can't believe it but I listened to this whole thing. Great to hear him give props to Jack Fitzpatrick and Rob Alexander when they were Snapfinger back in the day in Auburn. I used to go out to see them and think: So, this is how good you have to be to play in a bar band? Little did I know they were actually world class players at a young age! Neat interview with Allen. He has always been very kind to me and I couldn't carry his case. You better hurry though, LA (lower Alabama or, at least, East AL) is starting to look more like LA every day. Crowded!
