    To anyone questioning what was done: It was the cam shaft adjuster and the bolt that holds it to the camshaft. The chain tensioner may have been replaced for good measure. See: Goat Garage video about M276.9 engine rattle on start up.

      @@FCF27 Once the oil pressure has built up, it should run and drive as normal.
      The real "oh shit" with this part failing is that the car will eventually fail to start because the timing can't be set correctly due to wear in the components of this part. * I think. *
      I'm not a mechanic, but have dealt with this problem on the left side intake cam shaft.
      It's really easy to fix it once you know what the problem is, which adjuster it is, and grab yourself a few torx bits and torque specs.

    Considering that MB used to make bulletproof motors like the M112/M113 it's sad to see the modern motors so fragile. Even the M272/M273 seem way more durable than the newer offerings. It also doesn't help that MB has 15k mile oil services, I feel like a lot of engine problems surrounding the timing chain, oiling system and top end problems can be prevented with changing the oil every 5k-7k miles.

    • @AjayPatil-fj5tu

      My m276dela30 mercedes got oil changes every 7000 km for the almost 90.000km it has beeing a stage 3 build(550hp),if you take care of them,they are fantastic engines,its because of fools that change oil every 20k km that this engines fail prematurely

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot Před 2 lety +3

      @@adriigonzaalez1788 Well the owners are following the recommended interval. MB should drop the interval then so the masses know when to change oil. I personally would change oil more often but given that the oil change intervals were the same in the previous generation motors they never experienced any issues like the newer ones. This is partly a build quality issue.

    • @Sammy-fg4py
      @Sammy-fg4py Před 2 lety +1

      @@IKhanNot I completely agree. I have seen a lot of m112/m113 and m272/m273s. They are good engines. The m276/m278 are overcomplicated and not as well built.

    • @user-io5ld1zc1y
      @user-io5ld1zc1y Před 2 lety +4

      Well, oil change interval depend on how much fuel you burn. If you're driving in busy city traffic, by the time you'll drive 5k miles you'll burn as much fuel as if you were driving on highway for 10k miles (the numbers are approximate but you get the point). So there's literally no way around this and no "super modern synthetic oil" will help to decrease that interval. So yeah, regular oil changes every 5-7k won't prevent a badly design engine from falling, but at least it won't make the situation worse.

      Tensioner for good measure but cam shaft adjuster is the cause of the noise. They're spring loaded on this engine so the metal pin causing the racket cannot be simply replaced and the unit reassembled as Tasos mentioned in one of his videos about the subject and seconded by my home-mechanic experimentation when doing the repair.

    • @s140s
      @s140s Před 2 lety

      First step would be scan for codes(see if there are any related to timing- looking for failed cam phaser if none, install check valves), Install anti drain back check valves in the passages that supply oil to the timing chain tensioner, MB had a TSB on it, along with new tensioners. If the issue persist, the most likely culprit is the cam phaser(very common problem as those engines aged), There are 4, $1000 each, plus timing chain, components, labor, at least $5,000 at a mechanic. You can always try to fix only one phaser, or find a used one and take your luck on it. None the less, it will be expensive.
