Must be an American thing. If you'd done that here you'd be chased off the hunt. The lack of respect for the animal in that shot was disgusting. Then again, we don't shoot into the middle of a flight either but pick clean shots from the edges. I'd rather hold my shot than take a shot that has either poor chance of hitting properly or high chance of hitting another target poorly.
I’m glad Travis went with you this time. I would not have the cahonays to do a hunt like this by myself.

Really enjoyed these river float trips! Takes me back to great memories with my waterfowl bio dad (RIP). Each spring he floated creeks and small rivers in the Midwest to do wood duck brood counts. He’d take me along. Those were great days!

With river floating, how do you guys decide what has potential for duck hunting and how to take shots on birds if bordering private lands?

I use OnX hunt maps religiously and pre scout on the map to see where houses are at

I hunt just like this, you have to know the area where your hunting really well, the head lamp won’t help you any, as you found out, you have to navigate by the stars before day. I hunt 40 miles of river on a kayak I put in on bridges that are far away from public access and paddle into swamps. Finding your way through a mile of swamp in the dark sometimes can be a problem if it’s really cloudy or foggy. If I have signal, I find my way using the satellite imaging on google maps like a gps before light and then float shoot my way back after my hunt. I really enjoyed this video!

you should find a way to tie your paddle to the kayak so that way you can just throw the paddle to shoot instead of scrambling to put it in the kayak and pick up your gun
I actually don’t put it inside I just drop which falls across the kayak but it wouldn’t hurt to do that

What tips do you have for river hunts? Is that something you can do on any river in CA? Its something I'm looking into starting but I have no idea how the rules/regulations apply to river hunts.
The best thing you can do is call your local game wardens office and talk to an officer. They’re usually super cool and will give you a ton of great info. You can check the reg book too and OnX

I've been looking into this myself and only question I have is are you hunting with blm on the edges of the river or is that private property ...I wanna be legal but can't find anything to answer my question
High water mark is legal in Ca, wether the water is at that mark or not
