  • In this video I consider the capacity (volume) of three Ortlieb pannier offerings and their suitability for carrying sleep systems for year-round camping in Scotland.

As always, useful info as padded as a winter jacket but great stuff (ha) and easy listening, thanks Dave!

Hi Jacqueline, "padded as a winter jacket", my new favourite idiom :). I had a load of fun filming this, though it is obvious that I had plenty of time on my hands. Mo and I are hoping to get out with the cameras soon, to film a wee Scottish adventure. Trust all is well with you and you are managing to get out and about in this wet autumn we are having. ATB, Dave

Hi Dave, I found this video just as enjoyable and as informative as many of your previous outdoor broadcasts. Agree, Saturday past was the most stunning of days. Fingers crossed
for more of same. Your garden looks braw. loved the interesting shots of the angular compost arrangement, great imagination. Cheers Again!

Hi Andrew, thank you for the kind comments and happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. It was actually quite fun to make this one and certainly a pleasant way to spend an hour or two indoors whilst the worst of the rain was hammering down outside. We've had a pretty wet autumn, with Saturday providing a hint of what could have been. I'm ever hopeful for a spell of cold, settled weather so that I can get out with the cameras. ATB, Dave

Hi Graham, glad you enjoyed it. I'm hoping to get out with the tent and cameras again soon; just waiting for this particularly wet spell to end. Looks like we are in for another wet weekend but fingers crossed I'll get another vid shot and uploaded soon. ATB, Dave

Great video Dave and don't worry about the lack of conciseness - I love a bit of rambling 🙂I had also looked at the bigger panniers you have as our old ortlieb classics are getting a little long in the tooth (broken clip on one side) but I'm constantly worried about over weighting these as I suspect I will have a scenario at somepoint where the bolts that hold the rack on sheer.. so I go bulky but light in the panniers (sleep stuff mainly) and as you've no doubt seen I go fairly large on the handle bar bag front so even in winter I can carry all I need... but facts won't stop me dreaming of bigger bags (I admit it I have a bag thing...) anyways I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with them. Hi Tom, good to hear from you. I hear what you are saying about overloading the rack system. As you know, I've broken the barnacles off two bikes now, so running heavy is indeed a risk. I contacted my Surly guru to chat about this and he says, 'with a Surly frame and Surly rack, you should be well covered if you do break the frame, as long as I keep within the weight limits'. The weight limit is at least 10kg more than I'd ever consider carrying so I'm pretty confident I'll be ok. The Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Classic is a beautiful bit of kit but, like I said in the vid, the bags are huge. Somewhere between 25 and 30 litre volume would have suited me better but I couldn't find anything suitable despite a fair bit of internet searching. At 35 litres, they provide more capacity than I'll ever need and will sit 'wide' on the bike. It will be nice to be able to carry a bulky sleep system though and to have plenty space available for a decent jacket for use in camp. Like you, I'll carry all my heavy camping gear upfront. I'll be in a better position to let you know how I get on with them (and the new bag on the front rack) after I've taken them out on a trip. I too have a thing for bags; I blame it on a lifetime of travel. I recently purchased some dry-bags from a Scottish company, BRAE cycling, to use on my forks. They have webbing on the front, which means they can be more securely attached to the front cages. I might do a wee review of them after a trip. They seem pretty strong, if a little heavy, and really good value for money. Worth checking out their website. ATB, Dave

So essentially a 30-minute video with a message you could deliver in 30 seconds. Mmm, I don't think you quite grasped the trend of the 'short form' content on the internet! 🤣🤣🤣
