This video is to compare three different aps-c cameras from different eras spanning only 7 years apart. A lot has changed in 7 years since 2012 when Sony created the Nex 5R to the Sony a6400 in 2019.
The noticable difference is auto focus and image quality coming from the 6k sensor in the a6400.
Even upscalling the 1080p footage you can notice the difference between the a6000 and the a6400.
It really depends what your budget is and what lenses you can pair with these cameras. Bad lenses will further reduce your image quality and make your image look worse.

This is the video i was looking for, go to buy a6400 soon, but maybe can you compare a6400 to a7c? i do have the money for it but is it worth to upgrade from a6000 to a7c or just take the a6400?
I love the actual tests you did. Other videos have 1 guy talking the whole time but no picture or actual demonstration.
Great comparison, have an A6600 and NEX 5T and no question the A6600 blows the 5T away in every situation but one pocket-ability. Love how tiny it is. Wish Sony would make an updated version of these tiny bodies with the latest tech.
I have the NEX5N, NEX6, A6000 and A6400. At 1080, if there is not a fast moving subject, in good light, it is all the same for video. All of them shoot 60fps. Of course the A6400 has incredible autofocus. But in real life, if you are not filming people running towards the camera, everything will be fine. Keep in mind, lenses are far more important. I just got a 18-105 F4 , it is really good for video (yes, you get bokeh at f4 and is has amazing IS). For photos the A6000/6400 has much sharper images compared to NEX5N and NEX6 (maybe due to 24Mp?). A6400 has better dinamic range compared to A6000, sharpness is the same. The A6400 Continuous Eye Autofocus is great for portrait shoots, it is really increadible, a time saving feature. The A6000 has Eye Autofocus but it is not continuous.
I often return to this video. At first, the Nex 5R seemed to me a great option, but now I see its cons and I look for better camera. And this video is always with me. The difference is very clearly shown, thanks again.

Just found your channel and thats a helpful video! I don't shoot anything but kid photos, not even video on my a6000. Any appreciable autofocus difference going to the a6400 for snapshots? Considering Tamron 17-70.

Do you have a cage that fits the nex 5r/5n/5 and doesn't obstruct the battery compartment? If yes, what model is it?
I just ordered the NEX5r and while the differences are definitely there, the price point won me over! For a not-so-pro vlogger, a NEX5R for about $150 will do me just fine :)

i've been using it for the past two years now too. Got it for 130$ off ebay and oh boy is it worth every penny! for what it does, it is incredible value. with some AI processing, I've got it to look very presentable even for today's standards.

I love my Sony a6400 I use it for my videos all the time now since switching from my older Canon 1300D. Using the Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens is nice and crisp as well, one day though I will get another zoome lens be it sigma or tamron. Great review!.
I wish you could compare their photographies more than their videos.For many reasons, understanding them into certain perspective much easier in photos than in videos, I think?

I think the reason the autofocus on the a6000 had a bit of trouble was because of the person moving behind the window.

I have a Sony Nex-6, and it seems that the video from it is better than the Nex-5p, and the autofocus is much better, although this is strange, because they have 99 focus points. True, I used 18-105mm. By the way, I wanted to buy a tamron 17-70mm f / 2.8 for it. Do you think autofocus will work in video mode? Thanks. Call me crazy but I liked more the colors from the Nex 5R. The dynamic range is a problem in video, but i liked the colors

Nice Comparison! Just a little note. The a6400 still has the old Bionz X processor (they improved things like the front end LSI though) ...only the A7SIII and the A1 have the XR at this point. :)

I use sony nex 5R to, but AF video its not working , what i want to do that , i use YN lens 50mm 1.8
I still use my nex-5n+kit for all videos in my channel. Will consider to buy sigma 18-55 f2.8. Nex5N in enough for me to produce awesome videos and photography. Its all about your skill to exploit the camera and lens into max potential.

Are u using the default picture profile on all camera? with no adjustment at all for the saturation/sharpness/contrast/details ?
They are all set to "normal" just to set things standard across the board
A: NEX 5R, B: A6000, C: A6400. Reason: A was super slow focusing, also "greenish" colour tones in the studio. C was very sharp in the studio.
But besides the 4k on the A6400, is there any advantage compared to the A6000 making the price difference worth it?

I love these comparisons tests, they are so interesting! 4K really does make a difference. Too bad 60 FPS isn't currently available for Sony APS-C. I feel that with proper shutter speed 25 FPS can stil be OK though. I think it depends of the style : cinematic (25 FPS) or realistic (60 FPS), am I right?. My personal preference is 60 FPS especially in CZcams videos/vlogs.
Sony ZV-E10 is APS-C and will shoot 60 FPS in 4k?

The outdoor was unexpected how good they are, but indoors, holy crap.
I also still have my sony nex5-r and a6000 as well. I might do my own comparison as well to test it myself but you did a great job comparing them to the newer a6400.

I still own nex 5r for I don't know 8 or 9 years now I think. Using a6400 now.
I actually got the NEX 5r becasue the R means its more suited for photography. But it is an amazing camera.
I have the nex-5n which is the same as the r just doesn't have Wi-Fi and wouldn't trade it for anything it's small compared to anything that's come after it and for point and shoot with a little creativity when I need to it's phenomenal and out of all the pictures you showed the five bar and 6400 had better color at least in my eyes. I also don't have the autofocus issue you were having when I have it and follow mode

On my phone there’s barely a difference. On my iPad Pro I was able to tell right away each camera.

The a6400 has no record limit on either 1080 or 4k. A bit misleading but good review nonetheless

just bought a nex5R for 200. it has all original items. Knowing that this camera is from 2012, for my books 200 for is a good price knowing how things are going up in prices today

I actually have a 2012 NEX 5R, which I bought with kit lens used for around 100 Euro. Comparing that to the 6000 and 6400 you are talking about a massive increase in price and performance. Besides with my video background I would rather use a real video camera for a video shoot than a photo camera that can shoot video. So your video is entertaining for me but not really fair, an apples and oranges show.
how come nex5r had touch and flip in 2012, but a6000 in 2014 and a6300 in 2016 didnt? i dont get it. and a7iii still had no flip in 2018. who took these weird decisions?

It doesn't really make sense comparing the Nex 5R to the A6000/A6400. They are not really in the same class of camera. The Nex 7 on the other hand would make more sense as it has a similar 24.3 APS-C sensor. I would be comparing a NEX 5R to the A5000.
I was thinking of selling my nex 5t to upgrade to a a6**** series, but after watching this video Im keeping it and purchasing one of the sigma trio f1.4 lenses. 👌🏻
