  • 3 Brownells M16-A1 Barrel Physicals
One Barrel had a Chamber Issue and it failed the Front Sight Base Alignment Check.
All three Upper Receivers are 1970 era Colt. After the video I swapped around Uppers and got the same results. The Uppers are worn but pass all Alignment Checks. It's not the Uppers that caused the FSB Alignment failure.
Since these Barrels are so hard to find, we decided to repair the bad Barrel instead of returning it to Brownells. We repaired the Chamber Issue with a 5.56 Flex Hone and corrected the FSB by re-aligning the FSB, reaming the holes, and fitting oversized taper pins.
We will do a separate video showing the repairs.

Thank you so much for what you do and the cohesiveness of your explanations. You were born to teach and break things down for us dummies. It's a fantastic gift and one that you use extremely well. I got a PSA 20" upper, with FN CHF chrome lined barrel. I had read a number of reviews where the front sight base was canted. The front sight base looks straight, but right away I noticed the right ear is thicker than the left. Who ever machined the notch for the front sight, did so off center. I probably could have returned it, but 6 clicks on the rear sight and I was zeroed.
I "think" I'm zeroed, it was cloudy that day, I'm almost 50 and need a brighter day. My range has a roof over the tables, add some clouds and I'm not as accurate.

When everybody is focused on flat top free floating ARs. The machining and calculations that are needed to properly calculate a front post site and indexing the barrel into the receiver seem to confound a lot of builders. It took a lot of tweaking to get this right and it will take a lot of practice and engineering to get it right again.

    @pcpolice7937 Před rokem +1

Mine was worse than your third one. It was where your rod point was at the “ear” of the sight. I could not figure out why my rear sight had to be all the way to to the left to hit a 12” target at 50 yards. So after just not shooting it for about a year, I bought a long drill bit at my local hardware store and did basically this same test. I ran the bit back and forth on my granite countertop to check for straightness after eyeballing at the store. Luckily got a relatively straight bit. Brownells took the barrel assembly back and replaced it even after I had written it off and left it in the safe for 18 months

It would be very helpful to see a chamber that needs polishing vs. one that’s good to go. I generally don’t follow the “polish it every time” school of thought, but there do seem to be a lot of tooling marks in chambers even in barrels that are otherwise fine.

Regardless of what you end up getting, I'd make certain that it's parallel to the column, and at a perfect 90 in every direction to the table before you use it. Ideally you'd want to use a gauge pin or some other known straight and round rod, along with a test indicator of some sort. Another good option would be a precision machinist square and gauge pin or other rod. In a pinch, you could also use a known good square and drill bit, just realize it won't be as accurate or precise.

How certain are you the carry handle channel provides that straight of a platform to determine the front sight is that off? I have a Brownells BRN10 20 inch light weight carbine barrel (the one with the milled front sight post) and the chamber is very rough, it puts two parallel deep scratches in the case and a consistent crack in the neck.
Brass cases will jam in the chamber and have to be mortared out after they fail to extract, steel case will mostly extract but the extra energy used to overcome the the chamber's resistance will cause the bolt to slow down and cause feeding issues and won't lock back on empty.
Brownells is long sold out of these barrels so I am very interested in what remedy they propose for your barrel problems.
I have been hoping the two high points that are leaving the scratches will wear down with all the steel case, if not I guess more active measures will be necessary.
It was a GREAT DEAL (glad I didn't buy two :-}.

Question from an amateur: Is the gas port hole big enough that you can twist the fsb a bit without covering part of the hole?

Yeah, the hole in FSB is about twice the size of the gas port hole.

Is it possible for a viewer to send you their AR to inspect? I have a Sionics patrol rifle zero that i bought in 2016 and have a few thousand rounds through. I know that's not a lot for the lifetime of a rifle, and i have had no malfunctions that weren't ammo related. Just curious to know exactly what shape my primary rifle is in.

What is the size for the field headspace gauge you use? NATO 5.56 max at 1.4736”? Or something smaller like the Forster HG0223f “field” gauge at 1.4696”. My thought is to buy a 1.4646”gauge for go and maybe the 1.4696” for no go check. If it closes on the no go check at 1.4696”, then maybe buy the NATO 5.56 max at 1.4736”. This is an attempt to save money as they are expensive.

@@Tunechi_Lee I do offer AR Services as a package/flat fee. It's a full tear down, inspection, gauging, fitting, and reliability service. I notify the owner about parts that fail and let them decide if they want to replace them. It takes me about 4-5 hours to do each AR, so it's not budget friendly.
I only list the prices when I'm able to take in work.
