      The difference is that generally speaking when you are off roadways, you are safe from being hit by a car. Because this thing is not restricted to roadways, you could be hit almost anywhere, which is why I am guessing it's not legal to fly over residential areas/cities.

    • @ReallyBigBadAndy76
      @ReallyBigBadAndy76 Před 6 lety +37

      It doesn't fly like a helicopter or an airplane. So what type of license would you get? Having a pilots license would be irrelevant to flying this thing. In general, licensing is a form of tax and a way for professions to control how many people are allowed to enter into a profession. It's debatable whether licensing is truly a safety benefit. Do you really think getting your driver's license made you a safer driver? I don't. Further, no license is required to fly other, existing ultralight aircraft and you don't hear about the "carnage" from all these unlicensed ultralight pilots crashing into things. So, maybe it's not as much of a problem as you think.

    • @killermurderer2208
      @killermurderer2208 Před 6 lety +5

      this might work if people aren't really 'in control' - meaning you tell it where to go and it flies for you (home, work, mall) meaning you have no control over aircraft stability and steering

    • @sircrapalot9954
      @sircrapalot9954 Před 6 lety +27

      ReallyBigBadAndy76 Yeah.. you might want to read up on all the restrictions ultralight pilots have on their operations. If you really think that the FAA and pilots licenses only exist to charge people money you're delusional. And if you think that this "flying car" could get certified to fly in the US over a populated area without requiring a license, you're double-delusional.

    • @Vladpryde
      @Vladpryde Před 6 lety +7

      Mappz is right. And never mind the price.....which I guarantee you will be FAR more than the price of an SUV. Probably closer to the price of a used Bentley.
      And nobody in their right mind is paying 6 figures for a vehicle that can't be flown at night or over urban areas, and only goes 25 miles between charges. Not unless you have loads of cash to spend on what is effectively a toy. In which case you'd probably rather have an actual plane/jet, or a Bentley.

      This is less of a flying a vehicle, and more telling computer where you want it to go, which might already make it safer than some drivers in Cali. And odds are, by the time this hits mainstream market, it will be entirely autonomous. That seems to be the direction that virtually every company working on these things wants it to go. Self-flying vehicles are way easier than self-driving cars. No construction, no pedestrians, no bicycles.

      And these aren't flying cars, as there is no way you can make something street legal that can't meet car crash safety standards, which are becoming more and more strict every year increasing vehicle weight. Aircraft can't be designed for crashes like that, and you also can't have rotating blades of death near people in a parking lot. This is idiotic. What they really mean is that they want to create affordable drones that can carry a person, and that way only limited pilot training is needed.

      I think the self driving car technology which also includes and anti-collision system will eventually get these aerial vehicles off the ground (so to speak). As is, it's not for the common folks to fly them, but if you just punch in a destination coordinate (GPS) to take you there, then with the anti-collision system it would be a viable and safe solution.

    BOTTOM LINE: Its an electric "Aerial Vehicle"..... it is NOT an airplane and NOT a car.
    It has more in common with ultralight helicopters, but not nearly so complicated as a helicopter.
    Personal aerial vehicles are not new.... but this design (while still in its infancy) shows more promise then most others.

    • @sircrapalot9954
      @sircrapalot9954 Před 6 lety

      Eric McQuisten like every other flying car, it will get killed in impractically and certification. Everyone who doesn't understand this overlooks the problem where a "flying car" has to operate in controlled airspace over populated areas to be useful. And that means a trained pilot, and a much smaller potential market.

    • @ericmcquisten
      @ericmcquisten Před 6 lety +1

      +mappz
      Actually there are many personal aerial vehicles out there, but none so practical as this one (electric & self-driving).... and just like ultralight aircraft, it is a niche market.
      It is not impractical, just because its not meant for the general masses. You obviously don't own an aircraft of any sort, and so you believe anything outside your little bubbly isn't real. Try again, there are hundreds-of-thousands of licensed owners of aircraft (private airplanes, helicopters, ultralights, aerial vehicles, experimentals, etc.). Time to get educated on the subject matter, before posting comments about a subject you seem to know little about..... and time to learn the definition of what "niche" means.

    • @awaywidya
      @awaywidya Před 6 lety

      aaahhhh. so renaming a flying machine to an aerial vehicle means the laws of physics and the managing the complexities of a rotor failure (engine failure to those in the business) will no longer apply?

    • @ericmcquisten
      @ericmcquisten Před 6 lety +1

      +Karl Lucas
      "flying machine"? .... that could be any aircraft on the planet..... clearly you have never flown (piloted) anything in your life.
      The laws of physics apply universally..... including the concepts of auto-rotation for helicopters, and the laws of aerodynamics, lift, and gravity for all aircraft (a few concepts you may want to learn about).
      A lightweight (carbon fiber) aerodynamic vehicle like this, with 8 electric motors, means the thing is ultralight, and also means the chance of all 8 engines failing at once, is stupidly low.
      But perhaps you believe that all 8 engines will fail at the same time. Short of a major EMP blast, it is just not likely (at least in the realm of reality). Electric motors are more reliable then their fuel-based counterparts (internal combustion engines, turbine engine, rotary engine, ramjet, etc.).... and a lot safer then a solid rocket engine (as far as combustibility is concerned). And the fact these things can be made self-driving, means it will follow the same model as UAVs that take off, follow through way-points, & land on their own, without the risk of pilot (human) error.
      Seeing how Tesla's land vehicles drive safer then most human drivers, I will put my money on these types of vehicles, over your typical recreational pilot..... but comparing these to high-flying jets, is like comparing apples & oranges.... they are very different beasts.

      As an ultralight, this will not need a pilot's license, however like the video says you will not be able to fly at night or fly over Urban areas. I.E... cities towns etc.. They need to get it moved up to a light sport aircraft or experimental and maybe work for a license for a simple Helicopter certificate. The increase that personal flying vehicles will put on the need for Air Traffic Control will be the holding back factor on wide use for these. Just look at how long the FAA is taking on figuring out Drone flight.

    I love how the person is showing off a prototype that is "one step closer to a flying car" and everyone jumps on it like it's being advertised AS the flying car we've always wanted. It doesn't have wheels and it doesn't have enough power to substitute for either a flying drone or a car just yet. The point was that the drone vehicle is easy to fly to the point where air space crashes will be rare from pilot error. That's a key feature that plagues every flying car prototype today.

    • @huracan200173
      @huracan200173 Před 6 lety +7

      We don't need cars (ie: wheels). We need something like this that take you from point A to point B like an helicopter. This is perfect, and the fact that it has 25 miles range doesn't matter, cause it is designed for the city. For long distances, you should use a big airplane at an airport. The only thing that worries me is that I agree this needs to be autonomous. The risk is just too high. And we need a way to control air trafic, so I'm thinking that a great way to solve this would be to use vehicles like this one that go from certain point to another one, preconfigured. Like a bus or a train would do, but using 3 dimensions (height). Maybe in the future we would be able to have flying vehicles that can talk to each other so efficiently that collisions would be almost no existent, but until then, the risk is just too high.

      Yes it *could* take off from a parking lot. And so could other helicopters. You would need permission from the property owner to *legally* land it. Then you should consider any potential hazards. Light posts, small debris on the ground that could blow into other peoples property and cause damage and also the weather conditions. All the laws regarding ultralight helicopters apply to this vehicle. I wish it were different though to give it a little more freedom.

Then the FAA took a look at the idea of thousands of amateurs making their own flight plans over populated areas, possibly crashing, or crashing into commercial aviation, and banned the vehicle for more than hobby use. Those rules have been in place since then, which is why personal flying vehicles have not emerged.

    What happens with a broken prop or engine outage? It doesn’t appear at all to have gliding properties. I think I’ll stick with paramotors for now. Safer, engine out no problem, cheap on fuel, cheaper to own and, you can fly for hours at a time if you’re so inclined, you can land practically anywhere, and the same FAR 103 regulations apply. Even with an ultralight glider you can still touch down with an engine out although your landing options are more limited. Yes a paramotor requires training and certain weather conditions, and although I’ve never flown one of these I can almost guarantee a paramotor is a lot more fun. Eventually this could be practical with advanced AI, automated traffic avoidance, flexible charging options, higher run time, and some engine outage or prop damage recovery, but I think it has a way to go. Definitely a closer step to flying personal vehicles en masse though, certainly cool.

    • @pisoiorfan
      @pisoiorfan Před 6 lety

      Single engine failures are already handled by multi rotor drones with 6 or more propellers. They shut down a symmetrically opposed propeller to the one that failed and proceed to emergency landing with the remaining working engines in a nearest clear spot. Sure all expected emergency procedures require to be programmed in computer, and having redundant flight computers, and >33% reserve power, but such complications are all obtainable. This particular boat-shaped design allows even horizontal flight landing on a nearby lake or river. By having wings, they already maintain horizontal flight with reduced power. And keep in mind that beyond redundancy these engines are mechanically very simple, just a fixed stator, a magnet rotor with a couple bearings - without gears, fuel lines, gaskets, piston rings, carburetors, timing belts, spark plugs, injectors nor cooling fluid/radiators that each may fail in many ways in normal gas engines.

      Jonathan Ryals no, there's no real way to do that with a propellor. What you could do is mount a big cage around the prop and instead bump into your flying pedestrians. No more worries.

    25 mile range? Great. Under current rules you can fly from the middle of nowhere to 25 miles further into the middle of nowhere where there's no charging station.

    My prediction: you'll never see 'em. Considering how badly people drive on the ground, do you really want 'em buzzing over your house? And, the reason such things are now possible is because of computers? Oh, wonderful. Anyone who's ever had a "black box" or a computer chip suddenly fail on their ground vehicle (car, motorcycle, or scooter) will see the drawback to that, right away. And "affordable" depends on your tax bracket, I guess. Most of us can barely afford a beat-up used car these days.

    • @herberthans7015
      @herberthans7015 Před 6 lety

      the problem with your theory is the following. in germany noone drives (newer) american muscle cars or german performance cars either, yet they are still being built. noone drives ferraris, aston martins and such yet their shops in this country will never close. that's because there's a part of society (not more than 10%) who can afford this stuff, and an even smaller part (

    • @herberthans7015
      @herberthans7015 Před 6 lety

      so the only REAL problem with this is that people who can afford toys or transportation like this value their lifes a lot and are not willing to take risks because they can't take their money with them when they die so they rather burn it or waste as much of it as possible than to make ("earn") it without enjoying to spend it carelessly, and they certainly have no intentions to share it with others except their friends and family.

      This is the one and only reason needed right here , not because computers will fail but if anyone has been near a helicopter or even a drone, imaginea drone big enough to carry a 200lb person, quiet mode will require sound dampinging headphones, and the down force....pfft, blow your weave back. We will see em though, there will be flying cars. People are dumb and selfish, so the attention they get from this thing, even though it'll be negative to the ones around, its still attention.

    • @almcallister6490

      As a glider pilot I have never landed in a field (I have 150 hours of flying time) and know over 50 glider pilots and they have never landed in a filed either, but yes they do if they are in a contest, but you are trained to pick a place to land that won't cause damage or injury. Also a 2 place glider only weighs about 850 lbs and lands at about 25 to 30 miles per hour and in a distance of about 300 feet.

    • @almcallister6490

      The problem is more than telephone (power) lines . Under FAA rules you can land on your own property if you have enough land if you have enough room....BUT only on occasion, if you want land on a regular basis you need to have authorization from the FAA.

  • @Bearthedancingman

    As a pilot I fully support STOL and VTOL aircraft designs like the one in the video. It is freaking awesome!
    But also as a pilot...I HATE the idea of 'flying cars'. The thought of aviation being offered to everyone and lowering the required training to fly is terrifying. It is pointless and most of all dangerous. On one hand, if everyone needs a pilot's license to fly one, it negates the need for it to be a "car". On the other hand, the dream of people who design and want flying cars is a future where highways are lanes in the sky over lapping each other. The problem is, we are not close enough to making cars drive themselves safely. And I don't trust busy people or drunks or texting teens to fly unless they either have full pilot training (and thus won't be a hazard) or they travel in fully automated craft. It is just too dangerous to give flight to everybody.
