I was watching both Asia and BJ react. BJ seemed to like the music and didn't seem to pay attention much to the lyrics. Asia was perplexed as she tried to make sense of what they were singing about. They mentioned that it was the innocence of the song they were attracted to. Innocence was the last thing that could describe what the song was about. it helps to know what the song was used for in the movie "The Graduate". Without that, it is very hard to get a meaning out of the song but there are a few clues. I wondered if she knew who Joe DiMaggio was and why they reference that? What is it they have to hide from the kids? The song is good but without seeing the movie, not easy to interpret.

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

If my memory’s correct, they did drop the name “Mrs. Robinson” into this song which was already partially written, to make it fit the character in the Graduate. Check out the film, there were other Simon & Gar songs in it…. And it’s a great film. Starred Dustin Hoffman (very young) Anne Bancroft, and Katherine Ross.

God, you make me feel old. The Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack for the 1967 movie, The Graduate, was really unique because the songs intentionally fit the movie plot and characters so perfectly. And the music was so good. Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair, The Sound of Silence… This is not the place to discuss the movie, but Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft, has a very special place in film history.

Simon's inclusion of the phrase "coo-coo-ca-choo" is a homage to a lyric in the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus".
"Mrs. Robinson" was awarded two Grammy Awards at the 11th Annual Grammy Awards in 1969.
Mrs. Robinson was played by Ann Bancroft. In 1961, Bancroft met Mel Brooks at a rehearsal for Perry Como's variety show . Bancroft and Brooks married on August 5, 1964, at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau near New York City Hall, and remained married until her death. Their son, Max Brooks, was born in 1972.

"Mrs. Robinson,” was originally titled, “Mrs. Roosevelt.” Named after the 32nd First Lady. The song and had absolutely nothing to do with the plot of The Graduate. Director Mike Nichols, said he needed another song for his movie, Paul Simon told him that they were too busy touring, and that he only had “a song about times past, about Mrs. Roosevelt and Joe DiMaggio and stuff,” but it wasn’t finished yet. It was originally a tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt and the passing of an era; ...a more innocent time. Nichols used it, and Simon changed it to "Mrs. Robinson."

I know others have said this, but the character Mrs. Robinson is in the movie, The Graduate. S & G were asked to provide songs for the movie. The director didn't think one of the songs they gave him fit the move quite right and asked if they had anything else. They were working on another song called Mrs. Roosevelt. They changed the name and gave it to the director, and the rest is history. If I'm not mistaken, the song fit in so well, that they used some other S & G songs as the soundtrack to the film, e.g., Sounds of Silence & Scarborough Fair.

The original working title for this song was "Mrs. Roosevelt" as in Elenore Roosevelt. The director of the movie the Graduate wanted the song for his movie and since one of the characters name was Mrs. Robinson, also 3 syllables, he had them change the name. Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) is an older woman who tries to seduce a younger man, Dustin Hoffman who actually likes her daughter. The song plays is Forrest Gump when Pres. Lyndon Johnson is giving Forrest Gump the Congressional Medal Of Honor and Forrest tell him he was hit in the buttocks. Then shows him. Good to see y'all are doing better. Thanks and God Bless.

Paul explained he hadn't meant literally gone, it was just a metaphor for America's loss of heroes and those with integrity. Dimaggio was a major league hero of Paul's father's generation, and, yup, Simon had chosen that name mainly because it scanned well with his melody, he could easily have picked some other symbolic American icon but that's what came to mind..

This song was written for the movie”the Graduate” where the main character has an affair with Mrs Robinson, a woman much older than him who was trying to ruin his relationship with her daughter. Yes it was a passing clip in Forest Gump. The ironies in the song are right out there. A couple of young kids of jewish descent telling Mrs Robinson that Jesus loves her more than she knows…politics “any way you look at it lose…hide the affair in the pantry with cupcakes…joe DiMaggio being a symbol of a bygone era, but he too has moved on…. All about innocence lost…(by the way joe DiMaggio was pissed when this song came out and confronted Paul Simon in a restaurant Telling him “I’m still here, what are you talking about!!!”)

Paul Simon commented about Joe DiMaggio (the famous baseball player), when DiMaggio took the lyric literally (Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you, woo woo woo. What's that you say Mrs. Robinson, Joltin' Joe has left and gone away, hey hey hey). The lyric was about the nation's values and loss of innocence since Joe's times., the WWWII generation. DiMaggio said he had not gone anywhere and was somewhat offended by the lyric. Paul Simon said, "I guess he couldn't understand himself as a metaphor (for lost American values of a previous time that had been perverted in the 1960s - the JFK assassination, Nixon, the Vietnam war, drugs, rock and roll, Charles Manson, etc). So Asia and BJ, you are young. This song has a historical and cultural context that you have to understand. It's like you are archaeologists who dug something up from the past, and don't know what it is.

According to the account I read, "Joltin' Joe" actually confronted Paul when they happened to encounter each other in a NYC cafe/restaurant, & Paul ( a life-long Yankees fan) explained to Joe that he had used his name mainly because it fit the line of verse meter-wise (had just the correct number of syllables). No indication whether or not Joe accepted that story, but Paul apparently "stuck to it".

Love these guys. Saw them in concert during their 50th anniversary tour. They sounded incredible. Mrs. Robinson plays a central role in the movie “The Graduate”.

Mrs Robinson = the married older woman Dustin Hoffman has an affair with in The Graduate. The soundtrack was all Simon & Garfunkel.

Paul Simon pretty much dropped Garfunkel in the early 70s because he was writing all the music and doing over half the singing. Simon went on to an incredible 50 year career,Garfunkel not so much.
Things to listen from Paul Simon:
50 ways to leave your lover,
Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,
    Kodachrome
And anything from the album Graceland.
    Things to listen from Garfunkel:
    Nothing.
