    Alain may very well have been the Mozart of the 20th Century if not the Bach. His premature death in World War II robbed us of one of the great talents of composition. This piece was written when his sister Odile died in a skiing accident. Hence it may well be considered as a requiem in memory of her.

    This is beautiful! My appreciation also goes to the video producer. I used to sit right behind the organist at one church in Tokyo and observe like a hawk. After about a year of steady attendance, one of them asked my advice on a piece--and I actually had something to say! I'm too old to learn to play the organ, but I get such vicarious joy out of observing organists. Beautiful playing by Mr. Dubois!

    This is one of the best performances I ever heard. I don't mean only technically. The piece is also a very difficult piece in the sense to get a story-line from the beginning to the end. This organist does this totally! Nice thing is that he seems to play on the same instrument were Marie-Claire Alain did her recording long ago of this piece. I still love that recording. But this is the first time that I hear the piece played with a real sincere emotion! Bravo Daniel!

    Just such a wonderful piece by Jehan Alain, but such a pity that it is not publicly performed very often. One can only dream what may have been if his life had not been cut so short.

    He's not reading the music, but "feeling" it. There are those out there who criticize such physical movements, but I love the way Vincent expresses with his body movements and facial expressions, in addition to virtuoso playing. It's no wander he was chosen for Notre Dame!

      La facilité, la légèreté et l'expressivité avec lesquelles Vincent Dubois joue ces danses - dont certains passages sont d'une extrême difficulté - est fascinante. Bienvenue à lui à Notre Dame de Paris, il est digne de cet instrument magnifique !

    • @jfmayeur
      @jfmayeur Před 6 lety

      Un détail: la danse "Deuils" a bien été composée à l'occasion du décès d'Odile Alain, la sœur puinée du compositeur, âgée de seulement 23 ans. Celle-ci n'a pas été victime d'un accident de ski, mais d'une chute lors de l'escalade de la dent du Géant dans le massif du Mont Blanc. Ce décès est d'autant plus tragique qu'elle a sacrifié sa vie pour sauver celle de son jeune frère Olivier avec qui elle était encordée. Famille de musiciens donc , mais aussi de héros !

    I know that Alain's musical interests included Jazz, but the energy and movement in the 3rd danse sounds so much like the _orchestral_ "Hollywood" jazz (ofttimes over the top and tending toward "wild") heard in many 30s/40s American dance/musical films, that I find it hard to believe that he wasn't influenced thereby to some extent, at least in regard to Trois Danses.

    Et juste au moment où commence la danse du deuil (partie 2) dans cet enregistrement d'une interprétation sublime et poignante du Chant du Cygne d'Alain, la cloche de l'église intérieure sonne: terrifiante.
    Quel dommage que de ces Trois Danses - Rachmaninov et Duruflé ont chacun écrit Trois Danses pour orchestre - il n'y a pas de version pour orchestre!

    Those clangorous bells at the start of Deuils were very annoying for me! An interesting compilation (ie, the two different organs - wonder why that was done?) and a some very distinctive interpretations, some of which I didn't like but others that were breathtaking. Overall, I find this certainly one of the better performances on YT - most impressive, and an enviable technique. :)

    Imagine that Sir Edward Elgar had fallen under a bus, just before he wrote Enigma and the great masterpieces and you can grasp the enormity of the tragedy here of his early death. I have just started learning these starting with bars 78 to 98. I shall move on when they are note perfect and memorised. Can anyone think of a better organist than Mnsr. Dubois,. I cannot. I would recommend to anyone who admires the ridiculous Cameron Carpenter to listen to this and learn the error of their ways. Incidentally I rather like the bells..
