It's refreshing to hear a rapper talk about life in the streets (pertaining to the impressional youth) without the need to glamorize/sensationalize it.
The truest observation of the phenomenon of 'gangsta rap' since this gem was by a white English rapper called Jim Burke ("Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer"), in a song called "Hip-Hop Was To Blame After All" - a biting critique of how the big labels made violence sexy.
Yeah most of the time I only ever changed the station to playback FM to hear this song. Bummer when you'd switch to the station and the song would almost be over xD
Nobody is storytelling and sticking to the topic.. that's why, today's generation mumbles the stupidest shit from the top of their dome and 9 times of 10 it's some retarded shit anyway that is on top their fuckin' domepiece!! No wordplay, no flow, no vocabulary, no imagination/creativity to make them a "ARTIST" with a twist of their own style or swagger/lingo.! Today's music all sounds the same. I miss when you listen to a song you know exactly who the fuck it was no matter whose voice. Now, everyone uses auto tune, mumble raps or both! look it up, examine, research, DONT WORRY I'LL WAIT!..........!
They are the best kind of rappers hands down... PAC & Big was great story tellers and not every rapper has that talent. To me if you don't have "that" trait you're just advantage and that's why Pac & Big was running the table for a few years until...
One of my favorite top childhood songs. My mom used to rap and my dad did all the physical motions of the words. This song makes two references to police brutality. Even in the 70's and 80's (Children's Story was released in 89) police violence against those who surrendered was relevant and real.
carl johnson agreed, Immortal technique still around maybe on his new album. Dance with they devil type, but nothing like Rick's stories. Immortal is deep and a lot of truth lol as you gain knowledge more and more things make sense IMO, great song. Great style for me I like the lyrical side more, but with a great beat = perfect.
Never forget the first time hearing this. I was 7 or 8, was already writing rap lyrics (they were obviously trash) and listening to mostly eminem, Jeezy, NWA, Pac and Big, the usual. I was in love with hip hop So I was in my dads car and we went to one of his clients houses (pool man) and I stayed in the car and listened to the radio. This song came on, the piano instantly got me interested. Then slick starts rapping, I had never heard such finesse with words. I was instantly interested. He starts rapping and I hear that its a story, so I listen close. By the end of the song it was like I had just watched a whole movie. His storytelling through poetry was that good. It was all I could think about for weeks. "How did he keep the story so interesting while at the same time flowing and rhyming with such finesse?" Or "What stories do I know that I can try and write about? Or "Oh s**t I never got the name of the song, I need to find that record now" So I asked as many adults as I could if they had heard this rap story, I was imitating his voice and everything to them. I was desperate! I found it eventually and it changed my perspective on writing forever

Eminem said that Slick was a huge inspiration to his music and I can see it. Rick was definitely unique with his rapping style
@L.I. Schooner Why? Fuck you 😂

CANIBITCH
The intro to this song and Canibitch by eminem is extremley similair
Eh he has to mention Masta Ace. Like Ace fathered Em's style on rhythm and even sound.
He's got the coolest rap voice, smooth as fuck!
this song should be in museums. you press a button to hear rap. it would definitively be this song playing from the speaker.

wait you mean people who fight cops get hurt or killed??? who knew...
I always thought it was about gang culture and people joining up with gangs
It def is about choosing the wrong path and how your roots shouldn't mean that path is the one you have to walk.
You didnt read my comment thoroughly.
I said it makes two references to police brutality... Not that the entire song was about police brutality.
Still happening today.
