Pink Floyd - Echoes (Live at The Empire Pool, Wembley, London, 1974)

  • In 1974, Pink Floyd performed at the Empire Pool in Wembley; within the show they performed the entirety of DSoTM and also performed some tracks that they were working on aswell as Echoes from Meddle. This live show was taped and mixed and has been released over time on various boxsets. The last of these live show tracks was Echoes, which was finally released in the Early Years Boxset, exclusive to the Continu/ation volume. Since then, this track hasn't seen a re-release anywhere so I decided to upload the rarity myself.
Echoes, in particular, has some noticeable trivia to it. This was one of the final performances of the track in its entirety until partially being brought back in '87. Aswell as this, this live version features Dick Parry, a Pink Floyd staple who's appeared on various tracks throughout the bands history, on sax. The additional saxophone adds a nice new layer to this classic track.

Maybe it's because it's live after The Dark Side of the Moon was released, so it sounds like Echoes is the song from that album. The fact that it resembles the tone of the albums released at the time is a big reason why I don't get tired of listening to various Echoes live.

I believe it is the Early Years version. You can clearly see the difference in mixing with the bootleg version (Live at the BBC 1974). I love this version with a sax solo (and incredible that in 1975 they changed the location of the sax solo).

Dick Parry and the backing vox (Venetta Fields, Clydie King?) give this version a lovely "Dark Side" feel and you can hear what "Time" and "Eclipse" originated from, but on the BBC 1971 version Rog and Nick absolutely nail the groove of the funk section and that's my favourite version.

I've been listening to this song since I was 13, I'm 47 now. This is my first time hearing this version. You can hear how the song evolved in 3-4 years, and the band sounds so tight and polished. Just goes to show what years of studio work and touring does. I'm guessing after the success of DSOTM, they elevated to another level of musical professionalism.

Actually, with the background singers and all, the saxophone, this version is what I would call the "easy listening Echoes" or the "yachting Echoes".
Sure, it's "polished", but perhaps a bit too much.
Compare with gigs from mid-1971.....Crystal Palace, etc. It's raw then, minimal embellishments, therefore starved for subtlety or nuances... having just been born from "nothing" and thrown into this shitty little world of ours from the far-flung outlying reaches of the cosmos.

Some additional trivia besides the saxophone solo is the replacement of the Farfisa organ solo with the Hammond organ (on which he plays the chords) and the Minimoog (on which he improvises the solo). This can be heard from 14:33 to 18:21, but it can be better heard from 17:26 when the Minimoog becomes louder. Also, both the Minimoog and the Hammond organ (as usually) are played through Leslie speakers, as well as the guitar. This happens on most songs (if not all) from this concert and it was usually how they did things at that time.

    Overhead the albatross
    Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
    In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
    Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light
    Strangers passing in the street
By chance, two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can?
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun
    Cloudless everyday
You fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide

They didn't seem much interested in just filming concerts. Amazing now, given how it became a staple. But back then, bands generally only filmed concerts to make a movie to be seen at the cinema.
They did film Set The Controls during 73 and Careful with that Axe in 72. But not Dark Side!
Also I don't think Roger Waters secretly has a treasure trove of Floyd footage - that's ridiculous.

Was the vocal overdubbed from a more recent show? The phrasing and vocal timbre sound like a much older Gilmour from what I'd expect in 1974.

I still prefer the Sep71 BBC recording to this one. As cool as the added vocalists and saxophone are, this version has always felt more rushed and aggressive to me. This is easily a better, more cohesive rendition than any cut of the Pompeii recordings which are the unfortunate (imo) introduction so many people get to this great song.

(Forgive me, I posted the below before reading the description .. So 1974 opposed to 1971 but STILL as a musician the drummer, bassist and keyboardist on this version does NOT sound at all like Nick, Roger or Richard, all 3 of them have totally different playing styles than what I hear on this .. Once again, please tell me I’m wrong if I am and I will be humbled and put my hands up!! )
Is this really the Floyd in 1971?? The drummer and bass player (In my opinion) do not sound like Nick or Roger at all!! Also the keys are far to ‘tame’ for Richard in 1971 … tell me I’m wrong … PLEASE but I think this isn’t the Floyd … compare this to earlier and later versions by them and you can 100% tell the similarities of Nick, Roger and Richard … This sticks out like a sore thumb to me …. I totally accept if I’m wrong and I’ll put my hands up if I am .. but they are not the same musicians, also this is a VERY VERY CLEAN, polished and well produced track for a live performance at a stadium in 1974… F**king awesome version though!!! 👊🏻👊🏻😮
