Hi everyone, I just finished watching Sonic Prime and the animation is really good. One thing I noticed was that there are all sorts of references in the animation, whether from the Sonic games themselves or other movies.

#Sonic #sonicprime #sonicprimeseason2 - Hry
Here's a reference that everyone missed: all the characters are a reference to the Sonic The Hedgehog series, i spent days watching the show to realize that.
Also, I think there's another reference I spotted which is something Dr. Done It said, what about when he called Sonic a "Blue Rabbit"? Isn't that a Reference to Sonic's Old Design, before he became the Hedgehog we all know today?
@@lp64detrainer64 yeah, you’re right!
@@76o90 They should add mentioned references in here too then!
@@lp64detrainer64 Well, I guess they forgot. It’s cool enough that they got literally every single reference though!
@@76o90 indeed!
I’m actually impressed by how much time and thought the animators and storyboard artists put into these references! Some of them may not be intentional, but its amazing to see that Sonic content lately is being made by people who actually played and care about the past games that made the franchise what it is!
Sonic never disappoints when it comes to shows, well that's if you want to count sonic boom or sonic forces
@@hereby9408 Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of the other shows. Then again, most of em are from the 90s, so the writing was outdated when I was growing up, so I couldn’t have any nostalgia for them
yeah impressive
What's more impressive? HOW DID HE GET ALL THE REFERENCES
@@WilliamWilliamWilliamWill Ikr it’s awesome
@@hereby9408Now you're just hating for no reason. Sonic Forces, which is overhated but that's another discussion, has nothing to do with your point about shows. And while Rise of Lyric underdelivered (and I'm using that word intentionally cause that game is also overhated) its spin-offs were all decent and the Boom show itself is phenomenal.
I love how they made the badniks slightly more classic.
Recently, when I look at marder of sonic, lego, etc., I see clauses that are trying to unify with the classic badnik design.
@@user-fh7di8st6lI believe that started in Sonic Colors.
Fun fact: There are statues from Sonic Frontiers dotted around No Place.
Also, if we count the pink "Birdie" as the same pink flicky that was inside Gamma, then we essentially have the entire playable cast of Sonic Adventure in the show.
I believe that was the point.
Calling it Birdie and associating it with Amy is kind of a reference to the bird Amy was protecting, and having it be hot pink seems to be a reference to the bird in Gamma who was also associated with Amy (and specifically shows up at the end of Sonic Adventure alongside Amy). This is probably why the pink bird is with Amy in at least 2 different shatterverses. I'm surprised Black Rose hadn't befriended a pink bird yet, being a pirate and all.
Honestly, I think that is Birdie, because when Sonic was trying to reconcile with Rusty Rose int he 1st season Rusty showed him she has no heart and showed a pink bird (birdie) in her chestplate. Not to mention in multiple sonic flashbacks before he broke the prism I think I seen birdie with Amy, So in my mind no doubt Birdie is in the show.
@@Axxidousseriously that’s kind of a missed opportunity but yeah there was the one in Boscage maze as her ride and the one powering up Rusty Rose so I think it’s safe to say that is Birdie or at least different iterations of her.
It is the bird inside Gamma
Most people missed that
Then why are Orbit and Cubot in the show?
9:31
In any piece of Sonic Media. I just love it when he does the Adventure 1 pose
We've been getting it a lot lately too.
Sonic Generations.
Sonic movie 2.
Sonic Prime.
@@Axxidousdidn't he also do it in the ok ko crossover?
Bro I screamed "YO HE DID THE THING!"
@@Axxidousi mean forces and frontiers
@@coconutgun325 exactly.

7:53
Glad the animators know what they are doing . It's those little things and details that turn a show from "Generic Kids Action Show Template" to "Unmistakable Portrayal of an Individual's Identity"
7:12 Yeah I noticed this reference even as I completely saw it for the first time, how could a fangame predict such a masterpiece?
bro was surfing the life out of sonic
What's the name game lmao
Final fantasy sonic x6 or smth i forgot but it’s an online website game.

Sonic From References
huh
The hell are you talking about
Tf you sayin
what
Heh?
Love the Final Fantasy Sonic X reference at 7:05 even tho it was not intentional.
ojala fuera intencional
Fun Fact: If you look very cloesly at Nine, you can see that he is a reference to a little-known character named Tails who first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Game Gear.
Wow never knew that
@@Fran-Tubo that's what I said.
@@Fran-Tubo Sonic 2 first released on the Game Gear. One month later, it was released on the Mega Drive.
4:19;Also a reference to "Sonic movie 2" in the final battle with Super Sonic and the Death Egg Robot.
@@Tristansonic911 I wouldn't say so. Big actually kicked the thing as a real attack. Sonic in both '06 and movie 2 tapped it with his foot being the snarky little menace he's known to be.
3:20 Shadow is shocked to see a low poly model of himself
M Y P U-
Animation team: how many reffs do you want in this new cartoon?
Sega: *YES*
i could already just tell by watching the show as an artist and a creative that everyone making this show genuinely cares about sonic as a franchise and wants to inject it with as much love as possible, but seeing the proof here in the little small moments in between the genuinely awesome writing and animation and execution of everything is so emotional to me :,)
7:36 even after 15 years sonic unleashed opening cutscene's animation is better than sonic prime ngl
Agreed
Agreeable
I mean, you aren’t wrong.
and let's be real here the CGI cutscenes from Sonic and the Black Knight, Secret Rings and Unleashed are much better then al the sonic games that followed after
Comparing anything to the Sonic Unleashed opening cutscene is a bit unfair tbf
With so many references, it's sad that there are no references to cream, sage, or other members like Metal Sonic, but it's great that you're still referring to them.
I think they replace cream and cheese with big and froggy or with rouge
This show probably takes place before Frontiers
The way they treat the show, it's a little hard to put it on paper where it might show up in a timeline, but to me this feels a bit like an earlier version of Sonic (S1 Badniks still show up, Big shows up, etc.), so maybe just after SA1 or SA2 would be my best guess on where we'd probably see this show up since Rouge shows up, but not a ton of other characters (which then leads me to ask the same questions you guys are, where's Vector, Cream, Omega, etc.)
@@JeffGBAprobably before he had puberty....
@@JeffGBA and after the advance trilogy
in fact the reference at minute 8:56 can also be super smash since Sonic has the same pose when he is still
Not really. In Smash his arms are more relaxed, and he doesn’t bounce up and down like that.
2:25 the same can be said about the victory pose from Generations, since SSBB was released prior to Generations
4:18 That kick was the same kick Movie Super Sonic used to destroy the Death Egg of Dr. Robotnik during the ending!
Thats another reference to 06
Sega and Sonic Team are one of those companies that don't forget their past
but they acting differently when it comes to Sonic 06
Not really that's just SEGA of America hell Sega of Japan just made art of Sonic man@@spyduc
This is just amazing how the show pays a homage to a beloved video game!
I believe irs somari
6:51 This pose was seen earlier in sonic battle than sonic 06
"Alright, obviously we're gonna put many references from sonic games"
"Yeah"
"And a Quicksilver one"
"uh ok, it actually makes sense since he's also a speedy charac-"
"And a Terminator reference"
"What?"
"And a fanmade RPG where Sonic and Shadow face off against Storm Eagle from Mega Man X."
7:05 Bro even FFSX reference and all ❤
Never thought Sega will Reference a Sonic Fanmade game
5:37 do i look like i need your power
If you pause at 10:37 you can see Shadow's legs 💀
Bro turned into a Stickman
@@aydentolive71 LAMO HE'S THAT LEGS MEME
they tried to put me on the cover but my legs were too long
3:25 ooh, a clone of myself
I think the Quicksilver reference might also be a callback to when Sonic did something similar in the Sonic Movies.
Sonic even made a Boat go very fast on the Water, like in "Sonic movie 2."
Tbf If a character has super speed that kind of scene is pretty much a given
Honestly, it's cool wither way.
8:56 is my favorite but all of them is sick and amazing ❤😊
Tails'/Nine's origin is kind of different in Prime, In the games he used to live on the South Island but where he lives after Sonic finds him changes. The closest living place Tails has is his lab/labs, it technically counts. Prime meanwhile has original Tails live in Green Hill Zone and Nine live in New Yoke City, even though Prime is apparently a part of the game lore, idk.
He probably moved to new yoke
tails in the games used to live on westside island, in emerald hill. the flashback in prime also shows emerald hill.
No that was Green Hill not Emerald Hill in Prime also the fact Prime has too many contradictions
@@tysonmchese5799 watch the flashback again. it is emerald hill. checkerboard and plants are from emerald hill. it mimics the origins cutscene.
@@Chuyandknuckles New Yoke was originally Green Hill, if you saw the flashback scene with Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks
11:40
Frontiers reference aswell
7:35 my fav
Man, you really picked apart this series. I didn't think most of these thighs were references but I knew they seemed familiar. I don't think a lot of them were intentionally made as direct references but I love how you related to so many different things. Also, for the game over screen, I think the game over from Sonic CD or Sonic Lost world would have matched up better with the show version but you do you.
I would disagree and suggest that I do think a lot of them were intentional references and very few of them were just coincidences.
Knuckles' balancing being from Mania might be a coincidence as it didn't seem too specific like Sonic's was. But the WereHog transformation did come to mind for me and the Sonic Unleashed dodge was definitely recognizable. Sonic jumping backwards and free falling might just be something Sonic does but it's worth noting since we can probably only really point to the second movie for that anyways. While Knuckles definitely blocks Sonic's spindash in that battle, I think the line about him blocking it is also a nod to the movie since it specifically made a point to show that Knuckles was unique in being able to stop it, which, itself is a reference to Sonic X where Knuckles catches both Sonic's and Shadow's spindashes at 2 different points in the show.
8:51;Also in "Sonic movie 2020" and "Sonic movie 2."
Now that I watched the entirety of season 2, I can’t get spoiled until season 3
Wow, There are so many, Im impressed!
Also, there is also another reference. At 4:56, right before Sonic’s waiting pose, Rouge does her signature Screw Kick. This can be found in different types of Sonic Media, but it’s debut was in Sonic X.
I'd like to point out that the hidden palace reference is also a reference to the start of Sonic 3, where Super Sonic rushes in and Knuckles comes up out of the ground, knocking Sonic back. In this case, Sonic is rushing in and Knuckles come up from the ground and knocks Sonic back.
Also the animations for Knuckles used are a collection of references including his chuckle and his Sky Sanctuary "tired" pose.
it's incredible how the Prime team managed to make better cartoony Badnik models than Lost World. I was so disappointed when they replaced the modernized Generations models to the Lost World models in Sonic Dash
2:27 Sonic spanish good
For that last reference, they actually have that exact framing in Frontiers, also in reference to the Movie
This just gave me an entirely newfound appreciation for Sonic Prime itself. The references for Sonic X and Sonic Unleashed are by far my favorites.
The series has a lot of references, it's incredible that the series continues to be full of references!!
6:27 Honestly I think he was just EXPECTING Sonic to mess that up
In all honesty, 4:14 is a bit of a stretch, but it works as well
In Season 2 Episode 1, Shadow gets knocked into one of those space rocks and he’s in the Yamcha pose
5:39;Knuckles:"Do I look like I need *YOUR* power?"
One reference no one got is how when sonic was spinning in that ball thingy his yell was similar to the super smash bros brawl yell after he says "Now I'll Show You!"
Bruh that's super smash bros reference thanks for pointing out
shadow surfing sonic is the most badass reference i ever expected
8:06 wtf is doing cream?😂
straight up head butting this man
Great to see Sonic's still doing well. Nice Video!
About the spikes: I think there's another reference about sonic 1 bug, where spikes instant killing sonic after losing his rings
I am glad this show is canon.
Ian Flynn says it isn't though, so take Takashi Iizuka's thoughts on the series' canonicity with a grain of salt.
Wow, I am glad this show is getting amazing feedback!
I IMMEDIATELY recognized the Sonic Adventure pose that he did in the show. I saw that and went, “Hold up, did he just do the Sonic Adventure pose!?!”
0:49 actually that’s 2 AND 1.
8:21 I wouldn’t really call this a Quicksilver reference. It’s possible the team had that movie in mind when making that scene for Sonic, but Quicksilver didn’t start the whole slo-mo thing. It’s just how speedsters see the world.
I say it was a reference to the movies like how Sonic did the same thing at the bar in the 1st movie and in the snowy mountains in the 2nd one
Man, I really wish Nintendo would give some of their properties brand new cartoons. I’d love to see a brand new Mario cartoon, Pikmin , legend of Zelda, anything really.
Only problem being for Zelda which part of the timeline to do or do like Prime's doing and do like a shattered timeline
@MrSonicHedgehog they could do season of each game. Season 1 could be the first game with maybe 15 episodes. Season 2 would be the second game, ect.
@@Gamer-bq8so first game created or first in the timeline?
@MrSonicHedgehog probably both just to be safe. Gonna be deadass honest, I don't keep up with the timeline.
@@Gamer-bq8so There were plans for a Starfox show but it was canceled.
I believe I can point out a possible Dragon Ball Z reference you may have missed. When Prism Sonic turns to face Prism Titan Eggman, it seems to resemble the look that Goku gave Frieza when he went Super Saiyan for the first time upon Frieza killing Krillin right in front of him.
if i am right its from sonic uleashed
@@ziutekLOVEplackiNot necessarily (although very likely imo), it's just the fact that his eyes literally take the form of his Unleashed self (More specifically when he summons the emeralds)
That's a nice job on researching those details. You misspelled a couple of them, but understandably. Incredible!
Sega: bro this guy found all the references
5:22 are we gonna talk about the Master Emerald having its Sonic 2 design? (In Sonic 2 on some versions, you can get to Hidden Palace by jumping down a pit)
For those who we're wondering wow that code was a reference to the into for Sonic 2! Well no it was when Sonic 2 came out in 1992
A series made with love!
10:18;Chaos Sonic:"Heads up, Furbag!"
Dang, only 1 Sonic X reference?
Brother the fact they actually referenced it even once is very hype
Word. Who even watched that. 😂
Bro this is so cool! I actually do recognize those poses and things that look the same as the video games
Me too PTK Star I wonder how to play it?
11:48 - how youtube shorts makers feeling after ending their video with "and that's why"
Sonic and your orca fear😂
6:20
8:56 A sonic battle reference??? Now I KNOW sonic team went in for this show. 🔥
9:17 that's from shadow the hedgehog your referencing a reference
I knew about the 1-9-9-8 Refrence when I rewatched s1 but I thought no one noticed because each prime video I see they don't mention that
9:48 It’s actually Brawl, not Brawn. Cool Reference! 🙂😁☺️😊😎👍💖
But hey this is the first smash In a sonic media
There’s a lot of typos in this😅
10:11 its chaos sonic
r/woosh
Criminally underrated! This must have taken ages :o Great job compiling everything~!
I think Sonic Prime has more references about Sonic Unleashed
That’s what happens when they consult Ian Flynn. He loves the Heroes and Unleashed references a lot
TRUE
True
I kinda like how they were okay with referencing 06 and Forces of all games
I’m very happy that sega uses the potential of video games and movies to the fullest, although I think they can make more sense of the character.
Anyway, thank you for this magnificent video, I love it
I cannot believe they even referenced Sonic Maurice Hedgehog from the game franchise Sonic the Hedgehog
Im glad these kids born in 2015 can witness the greatness of the og sonic adventure logo, it'll be the last time they see it. Whoever made the thumbnail deserves a grammy.
Why 2015
the OG Sonic Adventure is backwards compatible on the Xbox Series S/X so the current generation of gamers have access to it.
THE one i like the most is is when sonic is running fast
For the record, the Quicksilver reference should be renamed the Futurama reference which technically came first from the episode when Fry drank a hundred cups of coffee and was able to travel at fast speeds to save everyone from a fire. Just saying.
Here’s a reference regarding the shatterverse portals, if you take a look at the gateways (the actual portal) it’s actually shaped like the shard that created the shatterspace the color of the gateway is also a knot to the shards themselves
I think something that's an intentional reference is one time when metal sonic and sonic are fighting, metal tells sonic "you're too slow" and the cadence of his speaking is almost the exact same as the brawl taunt
4:03 big introduced in sonic advenutre for the first time
11:03 I always thought that was a reference to darkspine sonic not werehog sonic
I spot many references as I can
I love sonic
I would've liked to see a 3d cgi animated series after sonic unleashed came out that is animated like the opening to that game and of course have jason griffith be the voice for sonic and maybe shadow if he could.
Heres a reference: Sonic is a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog from the games
8:40 edit: sonic movie when eggman shoots missiles at sonic, Tom and maddie
And also in the bar.
The whole show is a reference
BACK TO THE FUTURE!
Wait so shadow actually surfed on sonic?! He should do that again it was really funny
You know what's funny i didn't even know how many references they put in sonic prime but i got so hyped when sonic did his adventure pose and it was so cool when he did his sonic battle pose but otherwise i love this video i watch it almost everyday
With another, maybe mention how sonic's prism powered glow up looks like dream kittu's thumbnail of open your heart(80's rendition) and unwelcome to the jungle's title based on an amv!
2:42 This is Tails birthday
And how many years old is he
Ура, я так рад увидеть видео со всеми отсылками! О многих из них я даже не догадывался, а самые видные почти не упоминают. Спасибо!
Yay, I'm so excited to see the video with all the links! I didn't even know about many of them, and the most prominent not hardly mention them. Thanks!
4:25 sonic's version of gru
And also the sonic unleashed reference and sonic mania knuckles balancing reference was also cool and some references aren't even sonic but its still cool
This video is perfect!!!! Thank you very much!!!!
The "sonic movie 2 falling" reference Looks more like some unused Sprites from sonic 1 or sonic cd.
Fun fact, If you look closely, you can see Sonic is the colour blue. It was a detail I didn’t quite notice the first time!
i like your outro, its show the kronos island from sonic frontiers with a relaxing sonic music, keep it up!
I like how he waited eggman to say: oh, my egg!
So he could move on
