      I think it's more than verbally only- I think the entire concept of being directly dishonest doesn't exist. So they wouldn't hide it because that would be misleading in it's own way.
      The only hole in my own logic really is like the officers accepting bribes or such, but I mean that could be sorta an olive branch of sorts I suppose too.

      You're not lying if you're not vocal. For example, if i accidentally killed a cat driving home from work and didn't tell anyone, that wouldn't make me a liar. However, if i was asked "did you kill a cat driving home from work" and i said "no", then i'd be a liar. The characters in this movie don't only not know how to lie...they also don't know how to keep quiet...which is odd

    • @vickybarnett459
      @vickybarnett459 Před 8 lety +7

      Ahhh I see what you mean. That wouldn't be lying. I just wondered if you had something on your mind that you would normally withhold in case others thought you were weird (this is my life). For example... the masturbation comment. If you just masturbated and someone walked in and you're thinking holy crap, I just masturbated and that's all I can think about, but don't want to tell them. (We're getting deep haha).

    Not sure what this movie is about: clip was assigned as part of a course. However, once I was on a date and was in Half Moon Bay, (Tres Amigos, the old one which was WAY better food and ambiance! before the remodel and new owners) and we just ordered food, and sat down. The date asked me a question about how I felt re: a certain very controversial topic. She replied, "Well, if that's how you feel, I don't think we can go out again." I said, "Well, that's a you-problem. I get along with people who believe differently than I do. Shall we just drive back now, or finish eating?" It was like 1 1/4 hour drive back. We did not talk the entire way back, or at least I didn't. For some reason, she continued to contact me. That's not the only time such a thing happened.
    Once, i picked up a date and went to her door and ended up meeting her sister, mom, other family members. She got in my car, I opened the door, all that. I used to have a little 'stick-on" "Thank You for Not Smoking" on the dash of my car. She said, "You have a problem with smoking?" I said, "No. I just don't want anyone smoking in my car." She said, "Well, if I knew you had a problem with smoking, I wouldn't have gone out with you." I said, "Well, I guess you should get out of the car while we're still parked in front of your house." She got out, said something, IDK what, cuz I didn't care. Date lasted under five minutes.
    Another time I tried to buy a ticket to an "Ice Cream / Gellato event in SF with a date. She refused to let me pay. Once we went in, she refused to eat anything. IDK why she was even there, cuz we waited in line and everything. Anyway, after that disastrous "getting to know you" she wanted to do some sight-seeing in SF. I told her i didn't feel well and wanted to get home. We drove all the way back from SF about 1 1/2 hours. She continued to call me and wanted to hook-up, but I didn't see why she would. She was a nice person, and very reserved. But, I just felt wierded out that we would wait in line for an hour, pay for tickets, go inside, and she refused to even try a single flavor. I felt we were not a good match. But, maybe we could have been? I just don't see the point in trying to continue to force through anything if it doesn't feel right.
    This is why I reccomend group dating or staying close to home, low-stakes 'get to know you' type stuff first. As a guy, sometimes it takes just under a few minutes to know it's just not going to happen. I know females who are better at figuring that out quickly. But, they continue to stay on the date and get a meal, movie, or event out of it, the entire time knowing that it's over before it even began.
    Why? Just bail.

Keeping something to yourself is not a cultural norm in this world, just like kidnapping someone is not a cultural norm in our world. To do anything else but to speak your mind, well there is nothing else in this world. Although, there are many times in the movie where someone is clearly "lying" like for example when in this clip. She talks to her mother and essentially insults him in the conversation. She apologies and instead of stating that he is upset by her remarks, which he clearly is, he says it okay.

    What the film overlooks is, everyone would still be familiar with the possibility of honest errors, and for that reason alone would retain some faculty for doubt, therefore wouldn't automatically believe someone who prattles randomly about the afterlife etc. they would hear him out and -- assuming everything else about this world is equal -- they'd assume he was just wrong, or cutting corners in his thinking. Then again, maybe the furtive attitude -- the self-deception that underlies lazy thinking even when alone -- is itself a form of dishonesty\lying? In which case, maybe they assume even lazy superstitious thinking is impossible. Religion is absent in this world because dishonesty is absent, but to me that's a partial non sequitur, or is it? It assumes that all religion is insincere by nature, or at least in origin. A constestable notion. Itself ironically, an assumption lazy enough to be impossible in this world?
