  • In my opinion, the fastest path the full-time freelance web development is through learning WordPress development, and Upwork is a great place to start if you don't have a strong local network.
What do you think are some necessary technical skills to start freelancing as a web developer? Let me know!

I'm struggle to get started with Upwork because I don't have any porfolio to be show to, and I was thinking what I don't have. And you're right, I should focus on what I can provide instead of what I'm lack of... Thank you!

  • @sammcelwain7220
    @sammcelwain7220 Před 2 lety +3

This is god advice. There are tons of WordPress jobs on Upwork that don't require programming skills. Most of the time there is a plugin to do what the client needs. No need to code it yourself if a solution already exists. Learning how to troubleshoot WordPress issues is also incredibly valuable. Like fixing a plugin or theme update that crashes a site, plugin or theme conflicts, WordPress quirks, etc.

Yes for sure it's better, even necessary, to submit more proposals as opposed to spending lots of time on each one. I used to do the latter and it takes the wind out of your sails when you don't get replies. Below are 3 points of advice, if you want them, take them lol.
      1. Apply to the most recent and relevant jobs possible. I check on the job feed almost any time I think about it.
      2. Write shorter, to-the-point proposals, addressing the problems that stand out from their job posting.
      3. Build your profile as well as you can, even if your portfolio pieces are just screenshots of practice projects.

Thank you! I've heard many many good things about Brad Schiff's course on Udemy. His YT channel is called LearnWebCode. For theme development, I really liked the Eduonix course by Brad Traversy (a bit old, but it stands the test of time). Two other CZcams channels that have helped me with more advanced topics are WPCasts and Alessandro Castellani.
All that said, if you are just starting out and you want to be a productive WordPress developer, I would (1) learn CSS very well, then (2) download Local by Flywheel and start experimenting with different WordPress themes, plugins and page builders. Courses are great, but real learning comes when you build projects on your own.
Hope that helps! One of the best things about WP development is that it is used on millions of existing sites and very well documented.

I'd start by learning HTML and CSS well, which you can do on youtube, freecodecamp, udemy, etc. At that point I would just start building things with WordPress and experiment with different themes while learning some JS and PHP as well. Focus on building, though. You can use something like WampServer or Local by Flywheel to develop WP sites on your local computer.

Hey firstly great video. quick question, Can u implement node js into WordPress as your backend or is PHP all you can do in terms of backend. Was pretty interested in learning the MERN stack but the speed of starting with WordPress is appealing to me. Would you recommend I do both or just focus on one? would love your feedback on this dilemma!

Thank you and very interesting question! There are some Node.js CMS's out there, but WordPress isn't one of them. What you can do is use WordPress as a "headless CMS" which means that you would only use WordPress for the backend and you could use React for the front end. Headless WordPress is growing in popularity, and I personally love it. MERN is a great stack to learn these days too (and probably more valuable in the long run). Maybe you could learn WordPress and use that as a way to get experience until you are able to get a job or freelance gigs building MERN sites/apps.

@@coding4tacos385 Thanks for the reply. After a bit more research It seems like the basics of WordPress needed to complete some of the more basic freelancing tasks can be picked up fairly quickly so I think I may learn these, that way I can hopefully begin making some money whilst also working on developing my knowledge of MERN in the background. Thanks again for your feedback

Hi Tylor, I am a regular follower of your channel. I need some suggestions from you.
Whats the best way to develope a wordpress website? Is it a custom theme from scratch or tweaking a premium theme or using a page builder like elementor ?

Hi Laxmi, thanks for your questions! The "best way" to build a WordPress theme/website depends on many factors such as budget, functionality, speed requirements, deadline, etc. If the budget is good and there isn't a need for a page builder, I would usually opt to (a) build something from scratch or (b) customize a premium theme that uses the Genesis framework. That's just me personally, though. There are many good themes out there. What I'm trying to say is that if the budget is good enough, I would usually look for a theme without a lot of bloat.
Yes, I think you're ready to start doing some WordPress work if you are confident on the front end and familiar with PHP. PHP for WordPress isn't so difficult, especially for theme development. I find myself mostly using WP queries, if statements and loops for themes. I plan to make some videos on this eventually. Plugin development is a different story, but I think that's because it requires more skill with PHP (not necessarily WP specific). There are good Udemy courses for both theme and plugin development. The WordPress documentation is also very good. Once you understand the file structure, you can probably start building something to learn. One channel I've referred to for plugin development questions is Alessandro Castellani.

do the clients give you their WordPress password credentials? Since you need that to make changes to the theme/install plugins

Hey man! Thanks for the video!
I asked some people about how to become a Wordpress developer and they told me that I need to be expert in JavaScript and PHP also! Is it true? Or as you said I can land jobs with just my knowledge in HTML and CSS?
