    I used to be in a 1000 yard bench rest club, I used both of those rifles but for some reason I did far better with the Weatherby. I used 180 grain Berger in the 7mm and 215 Berger in the 300. I don't know why I did much better with the 300 but I suspect it might be heat related. I think the 300 having a better expansion ratio got rid of the heat faster. The 7mm Rem is very accurate up to about 12 shots but I was shooting up to 16 shots during the competitions. If I was hunting with one, it would depend on the size of the game. If you do your own loading the 300 is not too expensive.

    I think the 7mm Mag is more practical, and probably what I’d personally rather have. However, if your going to pick a case based on the belted H&H, you might as well go full length and full power. I vote for 300 Weatherby

    One of my uncles use to have three big game cartridges: a 300 Weatherby Mag, a 7MM Rem Mag and a 280 Remington. He said he could cover all big game species in North America with the 300 but felt it was best suited to game at least as big as bull elk. The 7MM Rem Mag was his favorite for the lower 48 since it was a great elk and muley cartridge. His take on the 280 was it’s great for mule deer and antelope so why not have one? My favorite between the two you’ve shown is the 7MM Rem Mag for the reasons my uncle mentioned.

    I am going with 7mm Rem Mag. I bought my Father a 300 Weatherby years ago. I have had opportunity to get 300 & 30-378 over 7 Mag but have always chosen the 7. That 300 is definitely a good bit more powerful. But anything in North America & all the plains animals in Africa can be easily harvested with the 7 even at decent distances. So I got to go 7 Rem. Mag.

    My vote is for the 7mm rem mag. Now the problem with the 7 mag is that you can’t get the full potential out of it unless you reload. For some reason, factory loads are way underpowered. I have no idea why 7mm rem mag is loaded so underpowered by the factories, but it is. The 300 weatherby mag is loaded a lot closer to it’s potential with factory ammo so if you don’t reload, I think the 300 is probably the better option. But if you do reload, the 7 rem mag beats just about every other caliber out there when taking into consideration all factors such as energy, velocity, wind deflection, retained energy down range, drop, etc.

    I don't think the 7mm rem mag offers much gain over the 30-06 based cartriges, but the real issue is that if one wants a lightweight backcountry rifle then the 300 wby magnum is too much recoil without a muzzle brake. However, it would be tough to make the case that the 7mm rem mag is better than the 300 wby mag as an ideal elk hunting cartridge.

    I hunt with and reload for the 7mm rem mag and people just are not giving the 7 mag the credit it deserves. My hunting load that I use and have personally chronographed on 2 separate chronos is the 162 grn eld-x and I’m getting right at 3200 fps with reloder 26(out of my 26” barrel). The bc on this bullet is .63 and at 3200fps the muzzle energy comes out right at 3700ft/lbs. At 500 yards, the bullet is still traveling 2465fps and has 2185fpe with only 21” drop with a 300yd zero. At 1000, the bullet is traveling 1826fps and has 1200fpe and only drops 188”. Now, I still will agree that with factory loads, the 7 mag is way underpowered, but if you hand load, the difference between these two cartridges is a lot less and the 7mag even beats the 300 weatherby in retained velocity, energy, and drops less from about the 800 yard mark on. My results with the 7 mag are not a fluke either because I have also used retumbo and got even higher velocities of about 3240fps, but the accuracy was better with reloder 26 and so that’s why I use it instead of retumbo. Also, my hunting partner also has a 7 mag with a 26” barrel and he got basically identical results as I did as we test fired our loads with retumbo and reloder 26 through both of our rifles the same day.

    • @ReloadingWeatherby
      @ReloadingWeatherby  Před 2 lety +1

      Impressive! Be careful sharing that, I once said that the 7mm Rem Mag could get 2970 FPS with a 175 gr bullet(Nosler book velocity). I had a guy promptly tell me I could never get that velocity. In this comparison I was specifically using factory ammo. 7mm mag really benefits from handloading it. I haven't tried any of the really high B.C. bullets in my 300 WBY. But I did get 3166 FPS with a 200 gr Accubond which gives you 4452 ft.lbs of energy at the muzzle and 2522 ft.lbs at 500 yards. Now if you handloaded the 300 WBY with some of the high B.C. bullets it would still be faster and more energy than your 7mm mag 162 ELD-X load at 1,000 yards, but it would be really close with the velocity. Thanks for sharing!

The problem arises ( not really a problem) when trying to match velocity with 24 inch barrel against 26 on the weatherby and overall case capacity. Plus recoil from 300 is entering into the picture. 300 Weatherby all day long.The 7mm is a fine cartridge,but it's hard to beat the raw power of the 300.As far as bullets,to me,magnums are made to shoot the heavier bullets better and faster,and in that regard,the 300 wins hands down.200-220 gr. 30cals are a lot more bullet than a 160-175 7mm.If I'm buying either one of these,I'm looking at what maximum performance will be on all size of legal game,and the 300 Weatherby is by far the most useful of the two.As far as recoil,the Weatherby can still be shot well with practice,and becomes a non concern,and let's be honest,in the field,you don't notice it.So my vote is for the Weatherby,there's nothing on this earth that can't be taken with it better than the 7mm.

    It's like trying to choose between your own children... Hmm. I'll go 7mm, even though I still haven't shot it. Imo the most versatile mag ever made.

    300 wby. It’s the original do all magnum. Comes in the best guns too matched to the ammo. Shot a few Caribou and many moose with 180 trophy bonded bear claws. Big holes. 3150 fps. Both are overkill for deer anyway unless it’s western mule deer. 300 wby dominates for big North American game and large African plains game. 300 wby will win.

      @@ReloadingWeatherby Ok, then I choose the 7mm Rem Mag just because it allows building a slightly lighter rifle. If only ballistics were taken in consideration I would have chosen the .300 Wby mag. By the way, Ruger Hawkeyes chambered in 7mm Rem Mag come with a 1:8 twist barrel.

      @@jasonharmon4314 Not dreaming... just ran the numbers out to 2000 yards. 300 Weatherby still beats the 7 mag with the 190 gr A-tip. I'm using a 230 gr A-tip and the Weatherby still has less drop and less windage. Though the windage is close.
      But since the 300 Weatherby isn't even the top dog.... Your 7 mag would get crushed by the 30-378 Weatherby, and that's with a 26 inch barrel. Put a 30 inch barrel on the 30-378 and you can push a 250 gr A-tip 3200 FPS. czcams.com/video/jZKmQkh6CaE/video.html
