Andrew explores Winkles as edible coastal food. They appear in prehistoric shellfish middens throughout Europe , and is therefore known to have been an important source of food since at least 7500 BC in Scotland .
They are usually picked off the rocks by hand or caught in a drag from a boat.
    www.thesolcinema.org
Coastal food eaten in Great Britain and Ireland commonly referred to as winkles or in some areas willicks or wilks , and in Belgium where they are called crickles Periwinkles are considered a delicacy in African and Asian cuisine . The meat is high in protein and low in fat .Andrew also shows how to cook limpets.

In the Azores they are called Lapas and are eaten live accompanied with a loaf of bread and a bottle of red wine. Yummy.

The intestinal blob is basically only alge it's not poisonous and some people actually eat the whole limpit raw.
If you leave them in sea water over night that's usually enough to purge them.

I was at Pendine sands in Wales when we saw tiny jets of water squirting out of the sand, we investigated further and saw several people agitating the sand with their foot so we did the same and lo and behold we found cockles! we gathered just enough for a meal for me and my mother and after leaving them in water for 24 hours we boiled them up with onions, garlic and white wine. Beautiful.

Don't bother to cook them. You eat oysters raw, don't you? I've eaten raw limpets "on the rocks" on Atlantic coasts in Britain and France, and on Mediterranean coasts of Spain. Chew them whole, they're delicious, INCLUDING the black bit! I'm 70 and still chewing. Among the best, the big yellow ones on UK's south coast. Bon appetit from France!

On a side note, it was one of the best holidays I've ever had. some huge (3ft diameter) jellyfish had washed up and we spent time rescuing them with a bread basket that we found, then afterwards we tied it to the towbar on my dads car and he drove up and down the beach with me sitting in the basket.
    Epic holiday.

Supposedly the intestines and all the rest of the limpet are also edible. They eat the whole thing in Madeira. Nothing they eat is harmful, nor do they break it down into anything that our bodies won't identify as food.
