  • The sudden death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna sparked tributes around the world. Perhaps none were more stirring than a mural painted on a basketball court in the Philippines in the middle of a seven-story dilapidated building that is used as a housing project in one of the poorest areas of Manila. The government is currently trying to evacuate the structure, deeming it “unfit” for living, but the residents have refused to leave, and one of the main reasons is the basketball court at the center of the property. Jordan Clarkson tells the story.

Just visited the court today for the first time in my life and it was awe-Inspiring to say the least. Knowing the history within those crumbling walls, seeing the art on the walls and the court itself, and most of all being immersed in the community and culture of the residents, I got chills standing in one of the most iconic streetball courts. It was surreal, I got chills.
They LOVE the place. As I was taking pictures of the court, I was serenaded by people singing karaoke just a few floors above. Despite the poor living conditions, people are so happy and proud to call that place home. And people are truly passionate about the beautiful sport.
If you ever get the chance to visit this icon, certainly do.

Whether a kobe/laker fan or not. From kids who plays basketball on the streets to pro's. Everyone is excited ( not being exaggerated coz i witnessed it myself ). With so many superstars in the nba, he's the only one who often visits our country. And that maybe is one of the reasons he captured the hearts of the filipino's. Philippine Government did offer a relocation but they say its far from their work/school etc things will be properly compensated but they refuse.. They need to be moved elsewhere since the tenement if a freaking old building and it sits on top of a fault line.. no modern technology would save any reconstruction of that building once a major quake hits.. Its not about the pride of the tenement anymore they are just being stubborn at this point.. then if anything goes wrong we all would point fingers at the authority as if they never gave warnings..
