I recently bought my first acoustic after 25 years of playing lol. I went out with the mindset that I'm getting a Martin....gold standard, then maybe a Taylor because that is the only other company that matters (I know nothing). So I decided to play everything under 2k........annnnnnnddddd....bought a Guild lol. Just felt right and I like the way it sounds.

I met Steve Helgeson of Moonstone Guitars in 1998 when I ordered a guitar from him. I got to hand select every piece of wood and shell and watch the whole process from board to completion. I worked for him as an apprentice from 2017-2020 building guitars and doing repairs. There is something special in that relationship between luthier and customer. It's my favorite part of building instruments is forming that bond when someone comes into your shop to have some work done

Some top players have been very successful with acoustic and electric. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Lennon,
Sir Paul, Dickey Betts, Steve Howe, Tommy Emmanuel, Even mr. Jimi owned and played a Zemaitis 12-string acoustic. I use to love the MTV Unplugged series.
You could see electric acts doing their thing with acoustic instruments, no loud amps to hide behind. Great series, pretty sure I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan tear it up on that show with an acoustic.

My mom came home with my first guitar, ~11-12 years old at the time. A giant fender acoustic, I was so pissed because I wanted an electric like my friends. She took it back to the store (she told me to screw off in a mom way) and then I had nothing, until I saved up for a squire starter package. It was crap and I probably lost out on an awesome acoustic if I hadn't been a dumb kid. I played electrics for years as a hobby but when I had kids everything slowly transitioned back to acoustic, quicker to pick up and put back down given the constant distraction, quieter after hours and I dont have to lug around an amp and all the gear.

Left handed guitarist myself, absolutely more used to playing whatever I can get. Just recently got into GAS, but my budget does constrain me. Online shops have opened up more options, but I do miss the joys of just going into a shop and noodling to find the right feel, and dream. Keep that 12 string, I got rid of my first (a Carlos Robelli) and it took me years to replace.

Fun video. I've played 99% acoustic for 30+ years now, and most have been Martin Dreads from cheap to expensive (DCX series to Amber D41). I love the old rock guitar sounds and tones but as a musician I've just always been drawn to the sound and skill it takes to play acoustic at a high level. I started on the violin at 10, so maybe that is a part of it.

I started playing an electric guitar. Then I went and bought an acoustic because it was simpler to bring to parties pull it out and start a sing along. THEN I bought a classical guitar. BY FAR, classical strings are the EASIEST to fret and not kill the fingers. Not only does it sound like smooth butter, it felt like smooth butter. I know there aren't a lot of ROCK N ROLL, headbangin', boot stompin' songs recorded on a classical guitar but... Well that's just cause the right person hasn't written any with a classical. Nevertheless, great guitar for a kid to start learning on. Especially with the wider fretboard, it does make playing a G chord or even a barred F chord WAY more difficult to play, it works on stretching your fingers and making each note very intentional. Going back to the electric from a classical was challenging but after having more education with the classical I felt I was now prepared for speed and bends.

I was first introduced to a Taylor at Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe in Catonsville, MD. Emory has tons of good Martins, but at some point he got into Taylors which, considering his clientele, was a bit of a gamble. But it's paid off for him. My Taylor came from a little hole in the wall shop in Etown Kentucky. It was properly played in so it had lost the brightness without losing the definition. I love it and being a dread it is a great rhythm guitar. I like the ethic of Taylor like I like the Ethic of PRS. But the law of diminishing returns is undeniable. The difference between a mid level Taylor and an 800 series is hard to hear. It's there, but you'll rarely hear it amongst the cacophony of a jam.

  • @thewhiskeycowboy-official

I started with an acoustic and expanded to electric. That made the switch super easy, but hurt more starting out. LOL I play them the same, overall, but the electric just gives me more "range". I am a fingerstylist and mainly do melody playing. And the electric gives me different "voices", and depending on what sound I am pushing it leads me to play different songs. While I truly love the acoustic, that simply isn't the case. But on the other hand, I have never brought my electric anywhere.... my acoustic has gone with me to the lake(s), on drives, you name it. Cheers!

I had a nice acoustic guitar, a Guild, that I absolutely loved to death and played the hell out of it for the last 3 years or so. This guitar was like a part of my identity, it was my sound. This winter it completely self destructed on me. Huge crack formed in the back, and the top bracing broke (found out after that I guess it had been broken at the factory, and they just glued the broken brace together and that glue is what failed.). Never again. Just cheap disposable acoustics for me from here on out.

What I would like to see manufactuers do is more variety of shapes and colors. When I walk by acoustics in a store or see some online or in a catalog I can't help thinking that they kinda look alike. • @ravenbom
    @ravenbom Před 2 lety

Most people start with an acoustic, which is as often as not a hand me down. If it's not, it's usually a cheaper acoustic. Acoustics usually have higher action, thicker strings; they're harder to play.
But if you want a great acoustic, the gulf between a Fender MIM which is gonna get you 90% of the way there and a great acoustic is much bigger.
The other thing is with a few pedals and amp setup, you can really change your sound on electric. But it's hard to own a couple acoustics to change your sound a Taylor or Martin, piezo or mic'd, Dreadnaught or Parlour or inbetween.
My acoustic hard case takes up as more space (and probably weight) than a Boss Katana.
Plus, they're little more sensitive to humidity changes.
THAT said, my Tacoma DR-38 is never going to leave my possession (in part because it has little to no resale value). It's been my favorite guitar for nearly 20 years.

Acoustic guitars most definitely are rock worthy. Lest I mention the Unplugged series that gave us Alice In Chains' best album compilation and recorded performance (at least in my opinion)??? Many artists have done auditory wizardry by releasing acoustic/'unplugged' singles of various tracks off their albums. Songs like 'Angel's Son' from Sevendust and 'Spacelord' from Monster Magnet have infectious grooves and great chops. The latter of the two is a solid rocker where the guitar just happens to begin, follow through, and complete the song whilst maintaining its crisp cleans using nothing more than the picking/strumming techniques to drive the notes/chords to their desired effects. Hell, Days of the New did an entire catalog of hard rock songs following the above mentioned formula in what...the mid or so 90's??? Point is acoustics aren't just for sitting in a van down by the river. Exploring how various instruments can be applied to different songs/genres/moods/sounds/etc. is also a very important task to try on for a 'fitting'. Music, as with art, deserves to be a fluid movement of creativity, passion, and expression flowing through as many mediums as possible to keep it young and alive with possibilities. 🤘🎶🙏🎶🤘

Im going to stick with Taylor for now Jeremy but guess what I put Martin strings on my Taylor :) I know you are not the biggest Taylor guy though which I’m still trying to grasp why. However Martin guitars are fantastic and one day I will own one maybe after I pay off my two Taylor’s. 🤠🎸

I got this cheapo Yamaha acoustic through work decades ago and for the price the action is is low and comfortable to play. 👍

PJ Harvey (or someone just as cool) once said that if you write a rocking song on the acoustic, you know it will rock on electric.

Some acoustic guitars are lame, most are not
    Same for electric
And acoustic guitar in general is not lame
Although I play electric a lot more, both are cool

I prefer electrics, but acoustics are timeless. Last year I bought my forever acoustic, it’s a Martin OM clone, for just under $500.

Jeremy must have taken the brown acid or something because Tony Rice never noodled and played with distortion for 40 minutes. I mean, really, where does this stuff come from??

I can play acoustic for about ten minutes before I am bored as hell. This is with a 000-28 and an HD35 so the guitars aren’t the problem. I have very little interest.
