  • 118 years of Mosin rifle, An iconic symbol of the Soviet Union!
"The three-line rifle of 1891" - under this name the legendary rifle was accepted for service by the army. On 28 April 2010 that event will turn 119 years old! This is the weapon of our army during the war with Japan, WWI and WWII - over one half of all the rifles were produced at Izhevsk arms factory (now - JSC "Izhmash").
The rifle of Sergey Mosin was the first rifle designed in Russia and accepted for service by the Russian army. The army used it for 50 years. It was an absolutely new type of rifle made for the new 7.62 mm round that combined case, primer, gun powder and bullet. The unique part of this magazine rifle was a cut-off rejecter that simply and safely prevented the jams in the receiver with the subsequent round from the magazine. By its features the rifle was superior to all small arms in the world. With time only minor modernizations took place, and that improved efficiency of production and reduced production costs.
Three arms factories at a time manufactured the rifles - in Izhevsk, Tula and Sestroretsk. But only Izhevsk made all the versions - infantry, dragoons, Cossacks, training, sniper, carbines and even acting miniature copies. Since 1925 Izhevsk factory was the leader in the output. And it was not about quantity only - Izhevsk rifle was twice cheaper than the one from Tula. Besides, Izhevsk manufactured barrels and receivers for all three factories.
During the Great Patriotic War Izhevsk technologists, designers and workers achieved a lot: labor costs per rifle decreased by 5 times, and output hit 10-12 thousand daily - enough to arm one division. In total, during the war there were assembled 12 million 100. thousand Mosin rifles, and 11 million 145 thousand of them was manufactured at Izhmash (factory № 74).
The production of Mosin rifle was ceased in 1944, but the weapon was re-born in new makes of sporting, hunting and ballistic guns of Izhmash. Valuable experience of Mosin rifle mass production as well as design, technological and labor potential formed the basis for the mastering of Kalashnikov assault rifle in 1947.
Izhevsk machine-building plant follows centuries-old traditions of Izhevsk gunsmiths and still manufactures combat and sporting guns. The latest models, accepted for service by the Russian army - 100-series Kalashnikov assault rifles, Nikonov assault rifle AN-94, Bizon submachine gun.

From the south to the Urals
You have marched with me by the Partisan's path
    And the enemies there were,
fell not a few where we walked together
    Chorus:
Hey, hit my rifle, accurately and swiftly
    Without mercy to the foe
And I to you, my rifle
Will help with a sharp sabre
    And you the same
Day and night at guard on the border
    We see our enemy's trail's
    We catch every rustle
    We know every enemy trick
Not without reason does our enemy anger
    Our borders are castled (shut)
    We will never step back
There is no greater honor to us
    We stay together
    In our army forever
    We are ready for battle
    With any army
    That we have to fight
The duo of us will fight
    You and I
Together we are used to winning

This rifle is one of the best in my collection. The heavy weight helps with the recoil, it is simple, no jams, a real combat rifle. For some reason it is more accurate than my uncles K-98. The only issue is that the safety is a pain to engage. Other than that it probably is the most sound and well designed rifles I've seen.

In my gun collection I've got 3 Mosins. They are amazingly simple and extremely durable. The perfect rifle for WW2 Soviet Army. I've got Mausers, an Enfield and a Garand in my WW2 collection. The Enfield is the most shooter friendly, the Mauser is of course great and, being an American the Garand is my favorite. All said though the Mosin Nagant would be the rifle I would choose for the Soviet Army of the 40's. It's extremely durable. Many Thanks to our Gallant Soviet Allies!

I always hear people saying the enfield bolt is smooth, but to me it's kind if stiff to cycle.. I don’t like the Russians, but they make reliable, durable and effective weapons. They also made/make a *lot* of them. I love my 1933 Tula M91/30 (hex receiver). It is an absolute beast of a rifle without the bayonet attached, with the bayonet it is even more formidable. Soviet doctrine was to have the bayonet fixed at all times so yes, properly fix bayonet to your Mosinka, *TOVARISCH!*

I must second that one. I have a Mauser, a 1903 Springfield, a Mosin, and a Krag. Of all of them, the Mosin is a close second to the Springfield as far as smoothness of the bolt action. A very sturdy, efficient design if I say so myself. I find it hard to believe that the Russians were cannon fodder to the Germans. THey fought well, and were solid defenders. Not to mention, they had their own good tricks up their sleeves.

I own a Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine in mint condition, which is one of the crown jewels of my collection. I also own a Yugo M44 8mm Mauser, which is a clone of the German 98K. Frankly, I have to say that I put them on the same pedestal. The Mauser has smoother action, but that short barrel on the Mosin Nagant carbine makes the rifle very light and handy. No wonder it was so appreciated by Soviet troops at places like Stalingrad.

The Mosin Nagant is an incredible rifle. No doubt about it, but I would never go so far to say that it's the best. Perhaps before the Kar98k. I find the Karabiner's action to be smoother, more reliable, and it's internal magazine easier to feed. Just the fact that the 8mm mauser rifle cartridge has no protruding rims makes the rifle a lot easier to handle and less of a pain. But ultimately, the Mosin Nagant is reliable and as long as you have a strong arm to work that bolt, it won't let you down

  • @lesliemcm

The Germans were also mostly armed with the Mauser 98 which was also "Dated as hell" the Mosin Nagant fired about as fast as a Mauser also. if you are talking about Semiautomatic rifles, the soviets had plenty of those, more than the Germans in fact the SVT-40 would have replaced the 91/30 if the Germans had waited another year

This is an excellent video; what's the name of this song? Also, Godzira and Raven, the rifle was primarily designed by Sergei Mosin; the Nagant's involvement in the design was token at best, and to my understanding, their modifications to the magazine were phased out in later production.

yeah actually it was Zhukov, one of those rare exceptional generals who wasn't executed, but instead banished to the far eastern front. Gave what little Japanese there were quite a run in Manchuria.

MP7 is fairly spendy, but it comes in big bottles. It's used by the military and law enforcement. MP stands for "Military, Police." It is about as strong as Hoppe's, but not as harmful for when you clean guns in the winter in your basement or whatever. I ran three patches down my barrel after shooting corrosive ammo: first one was black, second was gray, third was nearly white. When I ran a dry patch, it was clean.

@SuperDwang when they used the mosin nagant they were still the soviets. they stopped using it as their main infantry rifle after world war 2. then they used the sks and in the 1950's the ak-47, then ak-74 and i'm pretty sure that is the last weapon used by the soviet union. now its like ak-108 or aek-971 or something i'm unsure.

Why are people giving fsdggfh thumbs down?
Hey said it was a great rifle, and in reality the Mauser K98 is a better rifle.
The Mosin is slightly better in long range but the Mauser has:
    1. A much better bolt design
    2. light weight
    3. the bullet is slightly more powerful
And while the Mosin IS an excellent rifle, anyone who's shot a Mosin and a Mauser will prefer the Mauser's bolt.

@SashaVedernikov As for Western Europe, that was (for the most part) a group effort. America, England, Canada, Australia, and the French Resistance did their part.
Yes, we (US) sent more men, but England and everyone else fought just as hard as we did.
I'm glad you actually know what you're talking about with WWII. You're the only one I've found.
    Have a good day.

Have you cleaned out the chamber and what not with mineral spirits. There's probably still cosmoline in there from when they stored the rifled. Take mineral spirits and clean out the chamber with it. Take a 20 gauge brass bore brush and wipe out the chamber with that as well.

@SashaVedernikov And also, the STG-44 was a revolutionary weapon, the engineers that designed it actually helped Kalashnikov design the AK-47, If it had been concieved earlier in the war, the germans would have had a big advantage.
Compared to the russians, I have to believe the Germans had better weapons all in all (eastern front, american weapons is a whole other story), and to be honest, the Allies had 10million casualties on the eastern front, Axis had 5million.
