  • When I buy yarn at a garage sale or thrift store, I always wash it before adding to my stash, and I'm going to show you how to easily wash a skein of yarn before using. It's also a great way to soften up Red Heart Super Saver so it's easier on your hands before crocheting or knitting with it.
You'll need a lingerie mesh bag, and this tutorial uses a washing machine (and dryer).

Take note that this does not work with all yarns - there are some that should be hand washed instead, like 100% wool for example which would most likely felt in this process. I recommend checking the washing instructions on your yarn. I have followed this process as shown with Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Blanket Yarn, Caron One Pound, and Bernat Super Value with no issues.
I also have a FAQ on washing yarn and photo tutorial available on my blog: eyeloveknots.com/2022/04/how-...

Ty, very smart! U can put pony tail holders around the yarn before putting it into the bag to stop it from unraveling

That's a good idea. Didn't think of that. I like to live dangerously and see which come unraveled 😂 Luckily, it doesn't happen too often

I strongly suggest tying the outer and center pulls of the skein together especially when washing more than one skein A friend of mine did not do this and had a big tangled mess.

Aww. Fortunately for me, I've washed a lot of skeins and haven't had any tangle up. It does come apart sometimes, but I find when it's in the lingerie bag, even if with other skeins, it does not tangle. If it comes apart, then I cake it after it's dry. I would imagine based on the yarn, it could be more prone to tangling, or using a larger bag could allow more space for it - my yarns are pretty snug in my bags (I have a couple sizes.

Thank you for the information. It's so helpful. I have a mesh lingerie bag but it has a more open weave to it. I am going to purchase one like yours. Thank you again.

I have similar lingerie bags. You can actually pull the zipper pull through to the other side of the elastic band and that will completely prevent it from opening in the washer accidentally.

Hmm! I will have to look closer at mine - thank you! I've had a few disasters from it opening.

@@eyeloveknotscre8tioncrochet it’s hard to explain how to do it without just showing it, but if you flip the pull to the upper end of the zipper head and push that through the elastic first and then push the zipper head in behind it, it will be sort of locked in by the elastic band. The zipper head will just poke out on the other side of the elastic and the pull will keep it from sliding back on its own.
