  • A United States Navy owned and operated 1976 Cessna O-2A/337H retrofitted with a larger rear engine, and no front engine, came to the airport today, and I had to make a video of it. I'm a very big fan of Skymasters, and have seen pictures of these retrofits before, but never in person.

I once ferried a Skymaster from Topeka, Kansas to COS with the front engine dead.

This is a Cessna O-2A Pelican. The nose conversion is made Zivko Aeronautics. The engine in the rear is changed from the IO-360 to a IO-550N 310hp.

What the hell is the role of this thing... drone chasing?? There were were experiments with existing 0-2's during the Vietnam war to build a STOL aircraft as an air ambulance by ditching all of the extra radios the FACs carried and moving the rear engine up slightly... one or two patients could be loaded. Having flown Skymasters, that seems like it obviate the advantages of perfectly tuned centerline thrust and made the aircraft really hard to fly. I've seen similar configurations with both engines unchanged, but loading for patients thru the belly (not much room to clear).

I read on another video that this is "A US Navy single engine Cessna O-2 Skymaster with a Multi-Spectral Targeting System (sensor pod)".
More info on the Multi-Spectral Targeting System here:

They made a turbo prop version... which carried passengers and fast. never caught on.

Very interesting airplane- I'd read about a company that did single-engine conversions, but those were to a turboprop (P&W PT-6?), this one seems to have a big piston engine, like something out of an old Piper Comanche 400.
    Thanks for posting!

What a bizarre 337...would you happen to know what engine they placed in the back?

Wow, looks amazing, but, how sure is flying it?
Certainly the engine should be a powerful one.
I love this airplane, I've flown it and it's really nice.
I made a coverage of the history of this airplane, why this unusual way to install the engines, but it's in Spanish, anyway, here's the link.

I guess this is great because you can carry a few extra bags in the nose, but you can't tell me that engine-out safety hasn't suffered.

How much horsepower is it, once I get my private pilots license, I want to rent one and fly it but of course it has to be below 200hp for me to fly it. What beauty!
