    You can point a lot of your praise to Durante and PH3 games for working on the Switch and PC Ports of not only Zero but Azure as well, and probably co-collaborating with geofront both with NISA too. Crossbell has really been a community effort, you love to see it.

    The feature I use the most (about once a minute) is the Text Log. I have a problem with reading comprehension, and frequently day dreaming and just clicking through only to realize I have no clue what is going on. With a text heavy series, this feature is a must for me. It made my playthrough of the Sky arc worse for its absence

      To be fair the vanilla game aged way better than Sky (and I mean no offense as Sky is still my favorite arc) for more modernized gameplay systems and "level" design, the localization is just a step ahead and one that broke all barriers in it's way.

    For me personally the feature I miss the most was the OST toggle. While I think a lot of it is preference, I think the EVO versions of the Crossbell OST had more hits than misses (especially Azure.) So being able to customize your favorites was great.
    In particular I remember switching the battle themes to EVO when I got to the final chapter of Azure, which was good for changing things up and making things more epic at the end.

      That's mainly because the EVO soundtrack isn't entirely owned by Falcom.
      I beileve the licensing for the EVO stuff was a real nightmare to work through, it's why the EVO versions of ZERO/AZURE for Vita never came out (I believe Xseed addressed it in a blog post from 2013-2014). The licensing for that is split between Falcom/Kadokawa/Chara-Ani/Pyramid (I THINK, possibly more). it's been a while since i've looked at this info myself so i may be wrong.

    i just finished it today on PC and as a person who also played the Geofront translation, gotta agree with what you said. I too am disappointed they didn't have the auto advance, i think it maybe because they used the Kai version instead of the Evolution version, as i recall the evolution is Japan exclusive that added in Voiced and mouth movement of dialogues, extra quests and cut in slide for scenes. Kai is the newer version of the game but i think its cause they used the base game for the upgrade and not the evolution version but this is just my speculation. Also i kinda wished they added atleast the cut in slides for scenes from Evolution. Modders had done it before with the Sky Trilogy so heres hoping they can do it for Zero and Azure too.

  • @ifrit1937
    @ifrit1937 Před rokem

    One thing that you didn't really address in the video that I'm curious about:
    Did they straight up take Geofront's translation and leave it as is (from what you can tell) or did they take the Geo translation as just a starting point and modified the translation a bit so it was left stiff? Haven't played the Geofront fan translation but did play the older Flame fan translation that I think Geo even used as a base for their initial translations (or brought him onto the project too) before CS3 came out (Geofront came out after if I'm right or basically the month before) so outside of trailers haven't really seen the whole Geo translation but 1 criticism I always had was that in their effort to try to translate as much as possible to be as close to the Japanese translation the dialogue for characters were a bit too stiff/using terminology you'd generally never see used by native English speakers today (which should be the goal of bringing a game to a new country/language's audience imo which is why I'm more on the side of localization rather than straight up translations as straight up translations always are more awkward sounding in the long run or at worse become a garbled mess when verbs, nouns, etc are mixed around in the wrong places (usually machine translations will do this or people translations where the person translates the words in the order they come from left to write which for some languages will not work...throw in Japanse/other languages also don't really use pronouns like He/She or plural forms either which also lead to translation issues as well when doing a straight translation without extensive editing)).
    I mean yeah Geofront's is still a very good translation, especially for being 100% fan made, and probably the best out of fan mad translations but there's still generally just a few bit things that professional editors do that make games/books/etc read a bit better/more fluidly in their respective native language for the country the product is being localized to. For example the slightly stiffer dialogue due to some phrases/word choices being very dated or the use of stuff like Japanese honorifics which just sound more awkward than anything in English (especially given we generally have our own version of honorifics such as Mr., Mrs, Miss, Dr., etc for strangers and then as far as family go it's just generally Mom, Dad, Grandmom (or grandmother when being a bit more formal or talking about them to strangers/anyone outside of family and friends), Grandpop (or grandfather if being a bit more formal or when talking about them to strangers/anyone outside of family and friends), Uncle, and Aunt. As for brothers, sisters, and cousins we generally don't use any honorifics at all and just use their first names.
    If there's anything a bit disappointing with Zero and soon enough Azure it'd be that since these are based off the PC version it will not have the additional quests/CG cutscenes that the Evolution games had on the Vita...which would've made it the actual definitive edition as I generally view the best versions to be the ones with the most content (granted i I'm right there was some issues people had with them but I forget what they were tbh...may have been performance issues or something similar)...and to make sure you know this isn't based off the Vita/Evolution versions those versions of Zero/Azure had the character's portrait mouth's move when they were talking, from all the marketing shown of Zero and Azure so far (I did get zero already from NISA on Switch but haven't started it yet as I already beat it via fan sub and want to focus on games I haven't beaten for the time being) their mouths don't move like the PSP/PC/PS4 Kai versions.
    Best aspect of this version, well the Switch version anyway is that I can play it in handheld mode in bed/lying on the couch rather than in a computer chair in front of my TV...been moving towards playing as many games on Switch as possible so this was nice...granted I'm getting Reverie on PS4 only due to having CS3 and 4 on PS4 (well completed playthroughs anyway...could have bought the CS games on Switch too I guess to get the completion save files but like I mentioned before: I want to focus on games i haven't beaten so far...I do play on re-buying all of them that I can on Switch though once the extra cash comes in though and eventually play it again on Switch) and having completed saves for them can affect bonding event flashbacks in Rean's route from what I looked up in various forums and the like so I want to keep that as consistent as possible for all CS related games. As for Kuro and Kuro 2 though as long as they release in the west on Switch at the same time as all other versions (or earlier) I'm getting them on the Switch as all that bonding stuff hopefully doesn't carry over into the new arc like it didn't between Sky and Crossbell and Crossbell and Cold Steel. Same with post Kuro games if they still come to the Switch or the Switch's successor (which will hopefully be a handheld/home hybrid as well).

    I admit Nisa did a great work with the localization and the improvements, as you said, better whan anyone was expecting and it's without a doubt the best version to play in english. However, there is a little nitpick with both the PC and Switch versions. They changed some textures text from the original Japanese versions that makes them inconsistent with other japanese releases or even with Hajimari/Reverie. I know this is not an issue for the english localization, but this is also the official Japanese Switch/PC version and they should have taken a bit more care with what textures they were going to change. They should have maintained 2 sets of textures when text was involved. Geofront also changed those textures as well, so I wonder if the issue here is related to that. The most noticeable are all the references to the CPD which in japanese is CSPD
    Also on a more positive note, a plus from this version compared to the Geoffront one that almost no one mentions in their reviews is that there are some extra NPCs related to Cold Steel. This would be more noticeable with Azure when it gets released.

    • @AdvisorLorne
      @AdvisorLorne Před rokem

      I don't think the changes in textures for the English localization is really a problem. The Switch/PC versions for the English localization are developed by PH3 while the official Japanese Kai versions for Switch/PC of Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki are developed by Clouded Leopard Entertainment. So that's two different versions of the games created by different developers for their respective audiences.
      I don't believe JP players have access to the PH3 versions unless they import the game.

      @Natreg44 Před rokem

      @@AdvisorLorne I think I was wrong with the Switch version, and that one is indeed from Clouded Leopard.
      The japanese PC version is the NIS America one.
      This is usually a thing with who owns the rights to publish the japanese versions that Falcom doesn't develop.
      Besides Hajimari, which for some reason, CLE had the rights for the PC japanese release, every other japanese PC release comes either from NIS America or from XSEED. So the argument is valid here, although a bit nitpicky.
      We probably won't get a complete Japanese version of Hajimari from NIS because of this.
      Even though the japanese PC market is small, they do get the steam versions from NIS (Cold Steel 3&4, Zero, Azure, Nayuta), XSEED (Cold Steel 1&2) and CLE (Hajimari).
      They don't have Trails in the Sky in japanese on steam though, they have to get the old PC versions for that.

      Kinda a shame that a Sky trilogy or CS1-2 collection probably isn't possible for future English console releases as it would involve either XSEED developing them or Falcom/NISA needing to purchase the license for the localization and voice acting from XSEED. I can't imagine that would be financially feasible for them to do as it likely wouldn't sell enough to justify the purchase of licensing like how the Crossbell games didn't get English VA likely due to costs.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 Před rokem

      @@AdvisorLorne Technically it's possible to get all 3 Sky games and CS 1 and 2 via NISA as well...they'd just need to create a new translation for the game and not use Xseeds though as, more likely than not, Xseed only has the rights to the existing console versions/any that use Xseed's translations.
      As for sales it could wind up being an unexpected windfall for Xseed, NISA, and Falcom if Xseed allows NISA to publish the games again on the latest consoles, especially switch, as that would pull in the Switch only users too (which are not a small market anymore) along with people that haven't bought the PC versions or prefer console/physical versions and don't have Vitas/PSPs (well Sky 2 was only on Vita, 3 only on PC officially for the west) not to mention some people that may just want to buy a new version due to losing their old version/old version broke/some other similar reason and don't want to pirate the games. CS 1 and 2 may be harder sells though I won't deny that and the PS4 versions were released in the west as well so they're fairly recent so the only ones not here would be Switch versions...I still think they'd likely make a profit selling them on Switch even if it's not a huge profit.

    I only use auto advance when there is an English dub. No English dub is the thing I think is most notably absent. I know there are a lot of gamers who won't buy a game without one. It would of made it a lot easier to just listen to the words instead of having to read them. Falcom agrees which is why they have Japanese audio. If they wanted it to only be read they wouldn't of recorded any. I really think NISA needs to do an free audio DLC for this & azure

    Durante and PH3 deserve most of the praise, NisA themselves have done a pretty awful job on this release like letting untranslated lines get in that were translated by geofront in their patch.
    Also ofc the whole drama of nisa c&d'ing the Zerofield fantranslation group and stalling the series in the west to the point of us being 3 games behind again.

    • @Some_Random_Guy
      @Some_Random_Guy Před rokem +1

      I don't know if you can call what NISA is doing "stalling the series." they're giving us official releases of 3 Trails games plus Nayuta in the time span of a single year. maybe it's not coming fast enough for some people, but now that they've filled in the gap left by past games that were missing in the west, I'm optimistic that future games will come quicker once Reverie releases.
      as far as the Zerofield controversy goes, I have no real opinion on that since I never used their translations. it's unfortunate for the people that play the games that way, but it can also be seen as a positive since it's a soft confirmation that NISA will likely be localizing the later games in the future. personally speaking, I'd rather wait for an official western release than play the games using a spreadsheet since it would take away from the experience and make it less enjoyable for me
