    So here we go folks, I tried this one again but this time I used 2 methods to dry the flowers, Wax and Silica. The results where kind of strange , I had this nailed down to a tee , then disaster struck me! could not believe it! I saved it i think and added some cool LED Lights also. Well i think i saved it . lol . Let me know what you think ?

    3:20 If you ever see smoke like that when melting wax, TURN THE TEMPERATURE DOWN IMMEDIATELY!!!
    That smoke indicates the wax is getting dangerously close to ignition temperature...
    Any hotter (or a careless flame/spark) and your melting pot could burst into flame...

    As someone who spent 15 years working as a candle maker, I have to say it looks like you had your wax INSANELY hot. The smoke/fumes were a bad sign. We used a double boiler system (like bakers use with melting chocolate). The goal should be to melt the wax only to the point of becoming liquid, not to evaporation.

    Great Save. Love it. As for the masking tape, an old body shop trick is to place it on a paper towel, then microwave for about 10 seconds. This helps renew the adhesive and it will unroll easier.

    Nick, if you want your masking tape to last, store it in a zip-lock bag to retain its moisture. That type of tape dries out in ambient air and tears easily. Give it a try! Love your content!

    Nice save. May I suggest adding a reflective strip in front of the LEDs between the stand and the piece. It would direct more light up into the epoxy as well as onto any wall the may be behind it, and prevent the light from shining directly into a viewer’s eyes.

  • @christiedecker2724
    @christiedecker2724 Před 4 lety

    So sorry it smashed on you, Nick. I think what you did was a brilliant save though. Will you try again? If so, put the flowers toward the back of it and build it up backwards so the ripples are in the front...and sometimes, less is more. You can highlight the flowers up front and put the darker background on them only in reverse of how you did it, maybe spacing the behind with layers of the resin??
    Yes, silica beads/powder is amazing stuff. It's what's in the packets of vitamins to keep them dry. I highly recommend you try that again, and I hope you have more flowers available to work with as you do so.
    Thank you for sharing your experiments, your adventures with us. I don't have the tools or means to try these, but it sure is fun to watch! Blessings!

    Hey Nike, just a heads up with the silica gel. You can bake those beads at a low temp, like 70c for about 24 hours. That will dry the moisture out of them and make them reusable. We fill a few old socks with them and use it to keep our caravan and kayaks moisture free, and thus mildew free in the off season. Throw some in a tub with off cuts of wood to help dry out, or keep dry your pieces. Good for throwing in with boxes in storage too, like holiday decorations and what not. Silica gel is so cheap and so useful, great stuff.

    Hi Nick , a tip I pick up from Kim Tippin (woodturning) is to use granules from cat litter to dry out flowers, Its works realy well when left for about four / five days. Like the turning projects. Regards Tony
