The Night Window (Piano & Orchestra) | 1917 (OST) by Thomas Newman

  • In his lastest war movie, "1917", director Sam Mendes focuses on a simple yet powerful story about life, death, destruction, hope and sacrifice. There are many things to be praised of this movie - but especially the “Night Window” scene was the most surreal moment of the entire film. The beautiful movements of the shadows on the surrounding ruins of the city and the majestic score from Thomas Newman made that scene absolutely unforgettable.
    I realized that the soundtrack used in that scene was arranged also for piano in the tracks “Gehenna” and “Milk” from the OST, so I mixed them together in a cohesive order. Here is the result of that montage. I hope you enjoy this score - and I also hope in its victory at the Oscars!

      @mrlemoon5473 Před 3 lety +3

    • @elic1356
      @elic1356 Před 3 lety +3

      @@ziepex7009 Sorry this comment is late, but I hope this could answer your questions. In the movie the main character (after reaching an town- on his way to warn an advancing part of the British army of a trap -and being injured) falls unconscious which (from the viewers understanding) lasts until the middle of the night, when he wakes up to find the dark setting filled with Germans.
      The lighting is due to a variety of reasons: the darkness due to the night, the light due to several fires and flares being set, and perhaps other actions happening off screen.
      We know that (from the scene) the Germans had set several of the buildings on fire and had begun to send flares. I believe that I have a logical reason for this: they were (relatively obviously) signaling their position.
      There could be several reasons why they are doing this (though it isn't really explained in the movie). They may have low supplies or troops and are sending the flares in hope of support (which is a more realistic scenario) though they may also be using these signals to let the soldiers be alerted of an event (perhaps being called to action or warning them of something). My final explanation of this (which is a lot less realistic) is that they were trying to light up the area to see (which is a waste of resources).
      I hope this helps, I'd suggest taking a closer look at the scene.

The moments that followed, with him running away from the invisible enemy, dodging the flares, hiding in the shadows, is one of the greatest moments of cinema I will never ever forget. If there was an Oscar for best scene, this would have won it. Even better than the climactic over the top scene.

    Just watched Gracie Gold's exhibition skate from the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and I couldn't help but think about what if someone could put together a skating routine using this track, it would be awesome.

    Amazing montage! I was looking for the theme with strings, but couldn’t find clearly on Night Window. Now I see it resides in Gehenna ending! Thanks a lot! Do you know which song was which specific scene?

      You're welcome! As I remember, the track "Milk" was the part in abandon farmhouse, before the plane crushes, while "Gehenna" should be playing when they are crossing no man's land and ultimately reach the German trench.

    • @scallionrice4974
      @scallionrice4974 Před 4 lety +7

      Gehenna is when they are crossing no man's land and the cinema shot of them crossing a lake by going alongside the banks. Probably my favourite cinematic scene in the whole movie cuz the camera hovers over the actual lake while shooting them and gehenna builds up a new level of tension which sets up the next scene where they reach the German front lines.

    This is such a weird thing to share but I was kind of suicidal ideating and shit. And I found this movie and the scene and the music were so beautiful to me that I thought I should carry on living if for nothing else so that I can experience the beauty these things bring us. Yes, I am pathetic.

      You are not pathetic because of what you are dealing with. Instead, I want to thank you for opening up about your hard times in life, and I'm happy to know that you have found something that can help you keep going on. Remember that you are not alone nor the only one who is suffering right now. Be sure to search for help if you need it.

      @@Tim_S_Lucas First of all, thank you for such a heartfelt and genuine response. I am incredibly touched that you reached out and replied to me,and also made me feel validated in my response to this music. Its interactions like these that show me that even in the darkest of times, there are bright moments. I realise I am not the only one suffering right now, and I try to emulate the supportiveness you showed me to other people on here as much as I can. Thank you for being such a compassionate and heartfelt human being.
