  • This 2018 RAM 1500 came in with an intermittent check engine light setting a U0109 Lost Communication with the Fuel Pump Control Module. Interestingly though this module has no communication lines going to it!

    Great video and diagnosis. I can’t believe that the ground only caused that one issue.
    I think the repair should be perfectly fine. Obviously, having the ground exposed on the frame by the wheel might not be the best location, but that wasn’t your design.
    The Launch looks like a nice scanner. I bought a X430 in 2018 and still have it, but the tablet feels really cheap and I was never to happy with that purchase.

I now have a throttle III, the vci doubles as a j2534 pass through , I have the 4 channel scope ( I believe is hantek )also have launch xprog3 .. I also have. A pico. Launch has come a long way. But of course they all have their pros and cons of course you need more than one for their own Strengths

    I wasn't expecting a ground problem. Given that the pump ran fine, I was expecting to find a wiring issue on the feedback or control line. Good job sticking to the basics and adding power and ground. It also shows why you need a 4 channel scope and not cheap out on a two channel. Although, I do wonder what a high amp test light would have shown.

    @mikechiodetti4482 Před 6 měsíci

    Happy New Year Jake!
    Good Diagnostic tool!
    I've seen that before and I've used a nutsert in the hole so that I could put a regular or larger bolt to really tighten the wire or cable terminal to the frame. Then put something that will stick to and stay tight to the bolt and terminal to prevent corrosion. If that ground goes to the battery Negative, your all set. If it goes to the engine, make sure the battery Negative cable is at the same place. In other words both at the block or both at the same head. Sometimes these grounds are separated and mounted in separate places on sheet metal or aluminum. Those two metals do not make good conductors ESPECIALLY in salt belt areas. I've seen how a truck in Southern California that's parked near the Pacific Ocean can have intermittent electrical problems. Running a 10 gauge wire to underhood ground points in a loop, then grounding that 10 gauge to battery Negative solved more than one intermittent electrical problem including intermittent no starts.
    With micro amps and low voltages in these communication lines, the grounds must be almost perfect!
    These comm ground problems remind me of large trucks with multiple 12 Volt batteries in parallel having cranking/starting problems. It came down to cable or cable terminal mounting problems.
    Good one Jake!

    Nothing wrong with what you did there.
    I had a funny one where the vehicle would start and run, but as soon as customer applied brake to put it in gear, it cut out.
    Bad ground, the additional load from the brake lights was causing it to lift further and the fuel pressure became too low.
    I knew exactly what it was because the front marker lights were very dim (when off but engine running) and became brighter when the brake was pressed.
    So the fuel pump was finding a ground path via the tail lights and then the front lights.
    The ground stud at the rear was a similar stud to this Ram but was fitted to a reinforcing plate in the body.
    It had rusted out all the way around that 2x2 inch reinforcing plate!!

    We have a Launch with the X431 on it. It's a great bang for the buck. The two big things that are a pain to me are (#1) no code history data to know how many times it's occurred. (#2) and the biggest pain, is with the euro cars I scan, it only shows the factory code numbers, and rarely tells you the P code, so I have to go back out and into OBD to get a P code. Can't imagine why the software would be written to not give you both at the same time.

    Hey Jake.
    I’m a fan and subscriber of your channel.
    I was thinking the best possible answer would be installing a Nutsert in the hole you just drilled. Also commonly called a rivet nut. Then screwing in a new bolt according to what size Nutsert you decided to use. And then spraying with undercoating after reassembly to keep the corrosion at bay. It definitely will have a lot better thread purchase. 👍🏽

    • @autodiagyt
      @autodiagyt  Před 6 měsíci +2

      My issue with threadserts is you have added another connection point. It wouldn’t take much to have rust form between the insert and the frame. Ideally I’d rather weld a bolt to the frame to act as a new stud.

    If there ever was a case to iterate importance of referencing to battery ground. 😊😊👍👍

    • @simonparkinson1053
      @simonparkinson1053 Před 6 měsíci

      You would still get your correct answer if you had grounded to chassis.
      How?
      Because the supply (blue) would have shown as +10V (you might think voltage drop) but the drive waveform (red) would have shown as -2V to +10V.
      And you would know there's no way the PCM can drive a PWM output to -2V.
      That would tell you your ground is bad, just a different way.
      Remember, scopes with common ground MUST reference battery negative but Pico 4x25 series are isolated channels so don't strictly need to reference from battery negative.
      Handy for things like wheel speed sensors with small signals superimposed on a supply.

      The only advantage to the launch is they have the AutoAuth rights. Anybody else see the elephant in the room? Why is necessary to have a module to run a fuel pump when all you really need is ground and key on 12v? This crap makes vehicles more expensive, less reliable and prevents the average owner from fixing his own vehicle. Whats next, maybe we need fart sensors in the cab that would open the windows, turn the fan on and put the vehicle in limp mode. Just think of all the issues this would solve. Oh wait, I can't think of any either. What a bunch of BS!!!!!
