Cloud Atlas is an unfilmable book, so of course someone filmed it. And it's beautiful and aspirational and messy and disjointed and... well... some folks think it's a masterpiece. We just counted the sins, man.
Next week: '90s animation & early-aughts comedy sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

I worked in the place in Glasgow that they recorded the body being thrown into the alley by Tom Hanks, and they needed access to the building out of hours. As one of the two keyholders, we flipped a coin and I had to work late that night so they could light the building from within, although they never told us what they were doing.
Was working away at around 11pm, when I saw the rubber body getting dropped from above. All I saw was a body tumbling past the window as I glimpsed up, rushed to see what the hell had happened as I thought it could have been a stunt man.
The exact spot they show the body as having fell, was outside the fire door where all the smokers would go for their smoke breaks, so the movie was quite the subject of conversation for a while.

There isn't one story. They are 6 stories that take place in 6 different time periods in 5 different centuries. The idea is that little things can affect the future. It's confusing because the movie tries to get you to pay attention for subtle clues that connect the stories. But it distracts us by using the same actors for different characters using makeups. For example, Doona Bae portrayed a Korean character in 1 story, a Mexican woman in another, and a white person in another. Halle Berry were under different makeup to play Native American, black, white, and Indian characters. etc. You have to watch the movie a second time once your mind is over its curiosity of who's who.

I understand people's dislike for the complexity of this movie. But I vehemently disagree with the assertion that it's too confusing. It tracks each respective storyline in a linear manner, slowly revealing how they're intertwined. You're not gonna get every detail on the first watch, which I personally enjoy, but grasping the overall plot is NOT difficult. The writers did a phenomenal job of showing the story, and people that can't understand the basic storyline are too used to being spoonfed. I have no desire to be elitist, but c'mon, this isn't that hard of a movie to understand.

Six stories set over hundreds of years. None of the stories are even remotely connected (except for one character appearing in two as a young man and an old man), but the film reuses the same actors with different makeup to portray how souls reincarnate over time, some transitioning from evil to good, or vice versa. For example, Tom Hanks' character in the earliest story is the main antagonist, whereas the story set hundreds of years later he's the protagonist. Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant are evil in all iterations of themselves. There are a bunch of connections strewn throughout the film but they're only really for if you're into that sort of thing. I loved the film at one point but it's such a task to watch.

This might help someone better understand Cloud Atlas, as this is better explained in the book...
If you view the story chronologically, each version appears in the next. Cloud Atlas opens on a beach where a doctor is collecting human teeth of a once cannibalistic tribe. That doctor then interacts with the slave and Adam Ewing on a cross-ocean voyage and the story is written into a chronicle that is read in the next iteration by Composer Robert Frobisher. Frobisher's love letters to his lover Rufus Sixsmith, who shares sensitive data about the nuclear reactor with reporter Luisa Rey are read by Rey who also seeks a copy of Frobisher's Cloud Atlas Sextet for Orchestra. In the next time period, Timothy Cavendish is a book editor who edits Luisa Rey's news articles into a single book. After he escapes the nursing home, he writes his memoirs which are made into a feature film. A clip of the film is discovered by Somni 451 who works to emancipate the cloned fabricants (unwitting cannibals). Somni 451's final missive becomes the basis of a future religion of an almost primitive race of people who regularly have to fight a cannibalistic tribe potentially closing the loop of connectedness. It's a similar theme to Battlestar Galactica's "all of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."

The elevator meeting isn’t a coincidence. The movie is very clear that all of the stories (and the people in them) are interconnected.
In each story, one person has a birthmark that’s in the shape of a shooting star/comet - and there’s at least one event that connects the story to the others. Therefore, the concepts of fate and relationships are main themes.
The cuts between stories are also very intentional - and the movie uses them to help show how the story connects to the others.

Then you two sleep together in a cheap motel while Tom Hanks hunts you down, then fast forward to a factory in L.A. where Carlin shoves something into Hanks' crotch and they both explode. You go to Mexico with your unborn son and all I'm saying is... either way, you end up with VD.
